We're going to move from the southern part of Alameda County to somewhere between Martinez and Oakley in eastern/northern Contra Costa County. We have a few complications (of course!) and not much moving experience. Can you tell us how to plan? [more inside]

What are your tips for getting settled in a new city? I am not looking for moving tips. I am looking for tips about getting aquaintaned, settled, and secured in a new city once you are moved. If it helps, I am moving to Austin with my wife and two young kids and are leaving our friend and family behind. What services did you pay for / use that made your adjustment a lot easier? How did you learn the road system? How did you find the right community groups / churches / clubs? How did you deal with the stress and emotions that come with a big move? In a nutshell, I want to know how to make the transition to a new city a lot smoother.

I work remotely for a company, but have floated the idea of relocating. They're into it. How do I negotiate?

I'm trying to track down a book which was written in the last 25 years (or so) about an American couple who inherited a house in the west of Ireland.
The culture shock and concomitant problems involved with relocation, the house, the weather the people, etc. almost brings them to the point of divorce with each blaming the other for the decision to move.
I've searched high and low but could only come up with a similar tome about an Australian couple.
Thanks very much for any help.

How long does it usually take to adjust to a new place? I moved away from my girlfriend and friends by 3 hours. I know few people (those I met at a church and in workplace)...I am having a rough time of it as i am new in town, new and stressed at job, and just new at about everything it seems. The good news is that my girlfriend and I are getting married but it will be 8 months. SO, how long on average does it take a person to adjust to new changes such as job and city? I appreciate your feedback. My anxiety is much higher than it needs to be.

My sister moved about 5 years ago from Los from Angeles (we both have lived there all our lives) to the left coast because her husband was transferred there. She was excited about the move, and has a job she enjoys and made good friends. So I was surprised when she mentioned during a recent phone call that although she wasn’t homesick nor did she want to move back, she would always feel that Los Angeles was “home.” So my question is for those who have relocated, where is home?
