Looking for a leftist lily pad....

In light of the recent election, it has become more evident to me that I need to become part of a community where there is more of a liberal presence. This includes not only political persuasion, but also religious leanings as well. Currently in AZ. I would like to leave this area and relocate to a place that would be a better fit. Additionally, in researching potential cities, I can't help but noticing that a lot of the most desirable leftist cities also have very high costs of living. [more inside]

Talk to me about Newark, NJ: Safety, surrounding places to live, etc.

I am in some conversations about a potential new job at an organization based in Newark, NJ. When I was growing up in NJ the city had a reputation for being unsafe. My sense is that things have improved, but how much? What is it like to work in, and live in or near Newark? [more inside]

Six months to improve your quality of life - what would you do?

My latest temporary job is coming to an end this week and I have six months of living expenses saved up. Rather than jumping into another temp office job, I'm looking to use the time in a more productive way to further longer-term life goals, such as moving to a new environment in another part of the country and improving my quality of life and improve my (especially mental) health. How can I maximise the time and resources I have to get out of my rut and into a life that's more worth leading? [more inside]

How do relocation services/packages work?

I've had a few offers to interview at companies in other states and the major thing holding me back from responding has been a fear of having to handle the difficult task of moving. I know it's common for companies to offer a relocation service but how do these actually work in practice? Does it actually take the stress out of moving? I'm looking for your detailed experiences in both negotiating a relocation package and using a relocation service (employer provided or otherwise).

"Love it or leave it?" I think I will!

My home state is rife with problems, and it's government is corrupt and incompetent. As a public employee, I don't feel safe trusting my retirement pension to a state legislature that consistently relies on stopgap measures to avoid deficit spending and lacks the political will/intelligence to solve the issues that will most certainly arrive when even more Baby Boomers apply for Medicaid benefits (which are partially paid for by the state). I've decided to look for greener pastures. Please help me identify some areas I should investigate for a future relocation. [more inside]

living in Islip, Long Island

One of my favorite brothers has a job opportunity that would bring him to the East Coast from a small town in the Midwest (Yay!). Specifically, he would probably move his family to Islip, Long Island. He called to ask me what the area was like and I had no idea how to answer him. I live in North Brooklyn and have only been to Long Island a couple of times for brief visits. So I'm asking here for any insight into what life is like in Islip. I can find some facts online, of course, but nothing that gives and inside view of day to day living. Is it really expensive to live there? What is the culture like? Anything unique and wonderful about the place? Does it totally suck? [more inside]

Where is a good small city with decent weather for happening couple?

We are looking for a small city without cold winters that has a large body of water - no inland towns for us- and is vibrant, cultured and intelligent.
