Help me find work in the US

Having just come back from visiting family in a few different states, I'm now beginning to feel that their suggestions for me to move closer to them might be a good idea. I'm from the UK and wouldn't move without a job, so where can I find potential employers who would take me seriously and not think I was too much of a hassle before they'd even read my resume? Are there any particular jobs boards for this type of thing? I would also consider a temporary move. [more inside]

Are LA City relocation assistance payments tax exempt?

I live in Los Angeles in an apartment. In 2014 my landlord decided to demolish my building to build condos, so I received a $15k payment of relocation assistance from my landlord as mandated by the Rent Stabilization Ordinance of the Los Angeles Municipal Code and overseen by LA Housing Development (now the Los Angeles Housing and Community Investment Department, I guess). Is this exempt from State and Federal taxes? [more inside]

Help me have an adventure!

I've lived in the same region all my life - efforts to make a move somewhere else have always been stymied by the need for financial survival. I'm now in a position where I have some portable skills and assets and would like to go on an adventure in another country - working and/or volunteering rather than a holiday - with a view to finding a place to live that fits my own priorities more than overcrowded Britain. A question about job-hunting remotely

I live in Texas, but I'm actively seeking to move to Boston (for personal reasons), and I'm planning on moving there as soon as I find a job. I'm not moving sooner because I'm underemployed, living on savings, and the cost of living where I am now is much lower. What language can I include in a cover letter that concisely signals both "I'd be happy to move there at a moment's notice" and "I am not trying to con you into paying for my relocation"? Should I quit listing my Texas address and start putting a friend's Boston-area address on my resume instead? Am I overthinking this?

do I need to relocate my business and register in a new state?

Currently I live with family in Hew Hampshire and have registered an LLC this year here in NH at my parents' address. I'm moving just south of the border in MA, only 20 minutes away. Do I need to relocate my business? Seems like it costs more to register a business in MA. Tax-wise I believe it will be the same because NH based software businesses operating in MA will be taxed a sales tax starting this year.

Aluminum wiring! Asbestos! Termites! Are they a big deal? What to do?

First-time homebuyers under contract for a 60-year-old house-- how serious/expensive are these problems: aluminum wiring, friable asbestos insulation, termites, undisclosed window leak causing water damage? Along with original plumbing and an old HVAC, is this a pretty standard situation that falls under the umbrella of "all houses are going to have some problems, no house is perfect" and is this the kind of stuff they mean when they say you'll be spending 1%-ish of your home value on this kind of stuff every year? Or are these costs and issues on the high side, and this is probably on top of another 1%-ish every year on other repairs and maintenance? Help us put this in perspective! (We need to decide whether to give the sellers' relocation company the right to cancel our contract by requesting repairs. And we need to figure out what we should fix and how much it'll cost if we go ahead and buy the house without repairs.) [more inside]

Tax me

How do relocation expenses paid directly to a 3rd party work on your taxes (US)? We received the relocation expense breakdown from employer today and there is about $15,000 listed as w-2 reportable income, that was strictly the cost paid directly to the movers. Will we be paying taxes on that? Will our total income be our regular taxable income plus this $15000? Should we start having more taxes taken out of the paycheck to avoid any yucky surprises next year at tax time? Everything I find online talks about deductible expenses, but I don't see how that even applies to this situation because we weren't reimbursed for anything, the employer handled everything with the movers directly. We meet all the requirements for qualified moving expenses (time, distance and start of work), but again, don't know where that fits in. This will apply to the 2014 taxes, so we have plenty of time to get a better grasp of how it works. You are not my CPA or TA (we may get one, but I would still like to understand and prepare accordingly if we will be getting pounded at tax time).

Where to move, for nice weather and maximal big city feel, yet low rent?

I'm choosing a place to move to. I'm single and mostly unconstrained, except by my finances, my personal preferences, and the boundaries of the United States. My heart votes San Francisco, but my bank account strenuously disagrees. Also, even though I'm from Iowa and am therefore accustomed to a wide range of temperatures, I happen to be depressed at the moment and so I must have sun and warmth. For the moment I'm stuck in a suburban apartment complex surrounded by highways, in a New England state that is becoming increasingly wintry. This is my nightmare. My finances are somewhat flexible, and I don't know exactly what I can afford, but for the purpose of this question, let's say I'm absolutely unwilling to pay more rent than $700 per month--and on top of that, I require a living space to myself, with no roommates. On the scale between nightmare and downtown San Francisco, how close to the latter can I get? [more inside]

Job Interview: Do I tell them why I want a new job?

I have a job interview this Friday. It is in a city 90 minutes from where I currently live, and 30 minutes from where my wife currently lives. Looking at my resume, it's obvious I'm having a good career at my current place of work, steadily getting promotions and increased responsibility. If I was an interviewer, it would be in the back of my mind, "Why's this guy looking for a new job? Problems where he is now?" I know they can't ask about my personal life and reasons for relocating, but does anyone think it would be weird to tell them I'm applying for this job because I want to live in the same city as my wife? Of course, I'd also tell them I'm applying for the job because of the skills and value I can bring to the organization, my prior experience gives a unique perspective from both sides of the desk, etc. etc. [more inside]

Green Acres Redux: From Boston Metro to NH or RI

My husband and I live in Boston. As part of its annual employee survey, his employer is asking whether he would be willing to relocate. The most likely locations would be facilities in southern New Hampshire or northern Rhode Island.
