I'm thinking about offering a small man-with-a-van -type moving service for a few moves in the short-term. I have a couple of feasibility/legalish questions about transport rules and liability. [more inside]

So I just started signing up for a domain on GoDaddy, but then found out I could do it on my Nearly Free Speech account for less instead, but I can't register that domain on NFS right now because I'm partway through the registration at GoDaddy. What do I need to do to sign up for it via NFS?

Have you CANCELLED your 1and1 account successfully (by success I mean they stopped charging you and they released the domains registered through them)? If so, what steps did you follow?? I haven't started the process yet -- just researching right now -- but I've read a lot of 1and 1 cancellation horror stories here and elsewhere.

I just received a bill for taxes on a car I sold in 2001. The taxes are for 2001, 2002, 2003. I have the VIN - but I've moved about 8 times since then, and am not hopeful that I can find a copy of the bill of sale or transfer of title. How can I prove that I didn't own the car during that time? [more inside]

My girlfriend handles registrations for swim lessons, and it's a very time-consuming, badly-executed process. I told her that an online implementation of her forms, class rosters, and maybe even payments would simplify the process. Guess who gets to make this happen? (And needs your help to figure out how!) Why are there places that charge you $35 dollars a year for a domain name (register.com, netsol.com) while there are others that charge you as low as $7 dollars a year for a domain (godaddy.com, namesecure.com)? What's the catch?

I have a car that has been sitting parked for 6 months in Nashville, TN and the tags have expired. I will be going this week to drive it to my new place in San Jose, CA. I know that I will have to pay a few hundred bucks to register it in CA when I get there and would like to avoid paying to register for a full year in TN when I only need valid pates for a few days.
I've done some searching on the TN website and can't find any information if there is any sort of temporary tag (even 10 days is more than enough) that would get me through. Does anyone have experience with this? Any ideas on what my options might be?

I have a website that is hosted by DreamHost but the domain registration is at GoDaddy. I want to transfer the registration somewhere else because of GoDaddy's politics. One thing I'm looking for is private registration so that my info is not available to spammers on Whois -- GoDaddy and a few other companies do that. Anyone have any suggestions for good registration companies? Namecheap? 1&1? RegisterFly? Thanks.

I'm trying to register my van in Boston Mass. and the insurance laws are crazy. I have insurance already with my car in Colorado but it won't due in Boston. I really don't want to pay an arm and leg to insure and register this van because I will probably sell it in the next year or so. What is the most inexpensive way to go about this?

Regarding my CommonTimes post
Here's a question for all you seasoned MeFi NewsFilter veterans. So many news sources require bogus, worthless, annoying "registration", imagining that they're harvesting tons of valuable marketing information. Bugmenot comes in handy, but I hate to post links to CommonTimes which lead readers to a reg-gate.
I'm aware of the NY Times Link Generator
which does an end-around of the reg gateway. And BugMeNot
sure comes in handy. I'm also tagging with "reglink" where appropriate.
Any other suggestions for dealing with reg-required links?

I have a blog at http://depravedlibrarian.blogspot.com (I've also registerd the domain and will eventually put up a forwarding page). I misstyped this in the location bar: http://depravedlibrarian.blogpsot.com and found that registrant for this site and all the other Amazingbiblestudies sites (I checked 3 other Blogger address) is the same registrant. While it's not exactly domain hijacking, what can I, or should I do about this? How else can I get the word out about this? Thanks for your suggestions.

Augh! What happened to Bitbeamer.com
? (No link 'cuz it's gone.) Bitbeamer was the shareware successor to freeware LeechFTP
. I just tried to reinstall my (paid for!) copy, and the registration routine failed when it could not connect to its home base. Google reveals nothing. Has anyone noted what happened -- did it get acquired by another company? Did the author abandon the product? Do I have any hope of using my favorite ftp client again?

Is anyone aware of a method (online or otherwise) for determining to whom a vehicle is registered if you know the license plate number - without actually being a law enforcement officer yourself? Google's only turned up for-pay services (that start at US$30 or so). The vehicle is registered in Illinois, if that impacts the answer...

My brother found an iPod a while back. He sent it to me as a gift. I'm delighted, but wonder if Apple has a registration program which I should use to try to return it to the previous owner. And if that doesn't work out, I'm wondering what the essential accessories would be, since this is just the iPod.

I have a friend who is running a basketball camp. They want to have their site allow online registration/payment. We've looked at places like Eteamz
. But eventually my friend has merchandise they would like to sell on this site as well. Should they just use the registration sites until the time comes that they want to sell the other stuff? Should they just get something that just allows them to let people pay them online for anything? And if they do that, since I don't imagine they will be selling huge quantities of stuff what should they use to sell their stuff (camp and merchandise) online? Paypal?

While shopping around for domain names/ registration, I continually come across "already owned" names that are generating generic pages on domain registration sites. ie: "dotster" or "buydomains.com". My question - is there a way to buy these obviously un-used domains? Am I supposed to contact the hosting page? Are these domains , in fact, for sale?
