Can anyone talk me through the rules for domain expiry and backordering? My searches on AskMefi, Wikipedia and ICANN's site give lots of different answers and may be out of date. I had a domain registered with Network Solutions for over ten years and (due to email problems) didn't know it had expired until around 30 days after expiry. Then I paid the domain renewal fee, which Network Solutions accepted, but later found that they sold the domain on backorder to someone else.

What is the definition of private domain registration?
I recently registered a domain via gandi.net and was surprised to find that even after selecting their "private domain registration" service my first and last name had been published via whois.

Internet Domain Filter: In 2000, I started a company (Company A) and registered a matching top-level domain. In 2005, I converted Company A into a holding company, and started a second company, which is now the operating vehicle for our consulting business. The domain registration for Company A will soon expire. Is there any point maintaining the registration? The domain name won't have a high resale value and I'm not planning on resurrecting Company A as a public business. Is there anything I'm missing?

So I just started signing up for a domain on GoDaddy, but then found out I could do it on my Nearly Free Speech account for less instead, but I can't register that domain on NFS right now because I'm partway through the registration at GoDaddy. What do I need to do to sign up for it via NFS?

Have you CANCELLED your 1and1 account successfully (by success I mean they stopped charging you and they released the domains registered through them)? If so, what steps did you follow?? I haven't started the process yet -- just researching right now -- but I've read a lot of 1and 1 cancellation horror stories here and elsewhere.

Why are there places that charge you $35 dollars a year for a domain name (register.com, netsol.com) while there are others that charge you as low as $7 dollars a year for a domain (godaddy.com, namesecure.com)? What's the catch?

I have a website that is hosted by DreamHost but the domain registration is at GoDaddy. I want to transfer the registration somewhere else because of GoDaddy's politics. One thing I'm looking for is private registration so that my info is not available to spammers on Whois -- GoDaddy and a few other companies do that. Anyone have any suggestions for good registration companies? Namecheap? 1&1? RegisterFly? Thanks.

I have a blog at http://depravedlibrarian.blogspot.com (I've also registerd the domain and will eventually put up a forwarding page). I misstyped this in the location bar: http://depravedlibrarian.blogpsot.com and found that registrant for this site and all the other Amazingbiblestudies sites (I checked 3 other Blogger address) is the same registrant. While it's not exactly domain hijacking, what can I, or should I do about this? How else can I get the word out about this? Thanks for your suggestions.
