The state DMV won'’t let me renew my registration on my current car because I owe property taxes on the old car. Is that legal? Can the state refuse to help me comply with one law if I am potentially violating another one? [more inside]

I've got a vehicle whose title is in the process of being transferred to me. I've got to do the reregistration by mail from Oregon to California. I've had an offer on the vehicle. The potential purchasers say a bill of sale and them putting the vehicle on their insurance is sufficient to let them drive legally. They also mentioned a temporary registration, which I've never heard of. Is this a bad idea, or a practical one to get the car sold now. [more inside]

My university department has a dept.com as well as a dept.univ.edu domain. The .com is just a pointer to the .edu. dept.com is the top google result for searches on our name, but results for dept.univ.edu are buried many pages deep. Here is the problem: there is now a problem with registration of dept.com, so Google's links are not working. What can we do? Is it possible to have Google replace instances of one with another or something? [more inside]

Have you CANCELLED your 1and1 account successfully (by success I mean they stopped charging you and they released the domains registered through them)? If so, what steps did you follow?? I haven't started the process yet -- just researching right now -- but I've read a lot of 1and 1 cancellation horror stories here and elsewhere.

I just received a bill for taxes on a car I sold in 2001. The taxes are for 2001, 2002, 2003. How can I prove that I didn't own the car during that time? [more inside]

My girlfriend handles registrations for swim lessons, and it's a very time-consuming, badly-executed process. I have a car that has been sitting parked for 6 months in Nashville, TN and the tags have expired. I will be going this week to drive it to my new place in San Jose, CA. I know that I will have to pay a few hundred bucks to register it in CA when I get there and would like to avoid paying to register for a full year in TN when I only need valid pates for a few days. I've done some searching on the TN website and can't find any information if there is any sort of temporary tag (even 10 days is more than enough) that would get me through. Does anyone have experience with this? Any ideas on what my options might be?

I have a website that is hosted by DreamHost but the domain registration is at GoDaddy. I want to transfer the registration somewhere else because of GoDaddy's politics. One thing I'm looking for is private registration so that my info is not available to spammers on Whois -- GoDaddy and a few other companies do that. Anyone have any suggestions for good registration companies? Namecheap? 1&1? RegisterFly? Thanks.

I'm trying to register my van in Boston Mass. and the insurance laws are crazy. I have insurance already with my car in Colorado but it won't due in Boston. I really don't want to pay an arm and leg to insure and register this van because I will probably sell it in the next year or so. What is the most inexpensive way to go about this?

Regarding my CommonTimes post: Here's a question for all you seasoned MeFi NewsFilter veterans. So many news sources require bogus, worthless, annoying "registration", imagining that they're harvesting tons of valuable marketing information. Bugmenot comes in handy, but I hate to post links to CommonTimes which lead readers to a reg-gate. I'm aware of the NY Times Link Generator which does an end-around of the reg gateway. And BugMeNot sure comes in handy. I'm also tagging with "reglink" where appropriate. Any other suggestions for dealing with reg-required links?

I have a blog at http://depravedlibrarian.blogspot.com (I've also registerd the domain and will eventually put up a forwarding page). I misstyped this in the location bar: http://depravedlibrarian.blogpsot.com and found that registrant for this site and all the other Amazingbiblestudies sites (I checked 3 other Blogger address) is the same registrant. While it's not exactly domain hijacking, what can I, or should I do about this? How else can I get the word out about this? Thanks for your suggestions.
