This is driving me crazy [or, insert your preferred car pun here]

Where should I register my car? So, I just finished my undergraduate degree (yay!). I went to school in upstate New York, but maintained my permanent address in CT with my parents. Because of this, I have maintained a CT driver's license, and I have been driving a car with Connecticut plates. The car is owned by my parents, and registered in Connecticut.

I am now going to graduate school on Long Island. I could feasibly continue claiming "I am a student" and maintain a permanent address in CT... except that the graduate program requires me to establish NY residency for tuition purposes (e.g. they will only waive my tuition if I am an in-state student).

Because of that stipulation, I need to get a NY driver's license, register to vote here, and so on and so forth. But I'm not sure what to do about my car, because I don't own it. So, my questions:

1) It seems from what I've read that the state requires NY residents to register their cars in NY, but I don't own this car. Does that make a difference as to whether or not I need to register this car in NY?

2) Can I get my NY license and legally still drive this car that is owned by my parents and registered in CT? Or does getting a NY license mean that the car I drive needs to be registered here as well?

3) Is there any way that the car can be owned by my parents in CT, under their insurance, but be registered in NY?

The main reason that this is an issue is, of course, money - trying to pay car insurance on my graduate stipend is a frightening thought, so it's something I'd like to avoid if possible. I fear, however, that I may just have to bite the bullet, have the ownership transferred to me, and start selling my organs to pay the insurance. What's your advice?

Register domain name. That's it.

I want to register two domain names that I think I may use at some point in the future. I don't need hosting just yet. This is probably obvious to some, but I couldn't find a definitive answer. How do I go about it?

Merry Christmas, here's your website.

Looking for a webhost/reseller deal for registering MANY domains w/ temporary hosting - and need advice. Okay. I am currently using 1and1.com as my webhost for 3 sites and don't really have any complaints or concerns with them specifically.

What I need now is a host/registrar combination or singly to be able to register 20-ish domains and host them cheaply for about a year.

My plan is to to register the domain names of all my coworkers, (ie. janesmith.com, johndoe.com, etc) and create a generic but slightly personalized "personal/business web page" for all of them in the next few weeks.

For Christmas, I want to "gift" them the domain and login information et al. WHat they do with it from that point is out of my hands and they can worry about renewing their domains and hosting issues and all the other stuff on their won (though they will probably call me for advice)

All i really want is cheap/free registration and cheap/free hosting without the ads. I've done the basic research but I can't seem to find any good one-stop shop, and I'm not sure what the best way to go about combining two services for this end result. Any ideas?

Can I check if I'm still registered to vote or do I need to register again?

So I registered to vote in MA in 2004 but I've moved a few times since then. Can I check if I'm still registered or do I need to register again? I've searched online for about 2 hours now but I can't find any information on how I can check whether I'm still registered.

Now....I know I can re-register with my new address, but I'm wondering (assuming my registration is still good) if I can just leave it be and go to my old town (where I was living in 2004) in November 2008 and cast my vote there.

The only piece of information I was able to come up with is the main telephone number for the town hall of where I used to live, so I can call them also but I don't want to go bouncing around from department to department until I may or may not reach the right person.

Simple Point Of Sale software solution

Help me find an easy Point of Sale software solution for our business I've just gone through two months of absolute frustration dealing with a custom FilemakerPro programmer that my company hired. Unfortunately, he is not good at what he does, accepts no fault for the constant errors and mistakes in his program, and we are ready to dump him and count the 2/3rds payment as a loss and move on to another solution.

Our needs are fairly basic:

1. Seven registers selling various items within one location. Three registers sell Concessions, three sell Souvenirs, and one sells a single separate Concession item.

2. Centralized data for the registers. We need basic reports by station, items sold, etc.

3. A very, very easy touch interface. Virtually none of our items are barcode scannable, so a series of buttons with items on screen is ideal.

4. IP based credit card support.

I've been looking at several other solutions lately (this wasn't my project when the decision to go custom was made), and Quickbooks POS doesn't look good for a touch screen setup; Microsoft Dynamics POS looks promising, but haven't had a chance to give it a test drive.

I'm fairly certain there are good Filemaker programmers out there who have quite possibly made a POS solution; we already purchased 7 copies of Filemaker Pro and the Filemaker Server to run the data.

We have the Dell POS hardware in place already, so looking for any experience you have with PC based POS software.

CheckFilter

Can a store refuse a check (British cheque) that has been folded (you folded it to fit into your wallet)?

Should the cash register reject a check that has been folded?

This happened to me at a thrift store with a rather old cash register, greatly to my embarrassment and to the irritation of the clerk and the people behind me. The transaction was eventually canceled and I paid for the item with cash, after the clerk allowed me to visit the ATM down the block.

I usually fold my checks and I have never had this happen before. I'm thinking of carrying them unfolded from now on.

Registrar w/ bulletproof mail redirect?

Registrar w/ bulletproof mail redirect? For several years I have been content with service on my dozen domain registrations with my old registrar, but no longer. I recently registered a .com domain and created one email redirect and one webmail account but neither work. I had to hunt on the registrar's site for the contact-form and never received an automated email with a ticket number. (UPDATE: finally got an automated email this very minute.)

I'm looking for a registrar which offers superlative mail forwarding. I don't really need webmail or hosting or spam protection -- just rock solid redirect from a registrar who isn't going away and has a good reputation. I'm currently paying US $15/year per domain (a mix of European and American domains) -- offering 5 webmail accounts and 1,000 redirects per domain, and I would be willing to continue to pay in that range.

Where should I register my company?

I'm going to register my company as an LLC. My next question is where? Which US state is the best for this?
I posted a Q here a few weeks ago, and you guys really helped me out (thanks!)

http://ask.metafilter.com/70013/A-new-business

I'm now curious about where you think I will be taxed the least and deal with minimal hassles. I heard good things about WY, NV, and AL - but a google search reveals only adverts and little data.

I think I can register in any state I choose to and the process of becoming an LLC seems like something I can do myself just via a state's website. If you have any experience with this, please share it. I'm really a newbie. Bonus points if you can indicate a trustworthy accountant in the state who can file taxes for the company once formed and do any legwork that I can't do myself. Cronyism/nepotism ok.

Thanks a lot!

Help us regiter thousands of voters!

I would like to do a major service project with my Chicago middle school students where we register voters in their (and our school) neighborhood. What ideas might you genius mefites have for us? What organizations should we work with? How can we maximize our efforts through creative events/ideas? Any ideas? Any? I just thought up the idea today so I don't have any big plans other than I thought, "We could register 5,000 inner city voters before the presidential election." My wife thought 5k was too high, but I'm not sure. Anyways, if anyone has an cool/original ideas for events to attend, organizations to hook up with, or what number might be plausible, I'd appreciate it.

btw around 130 students would be involved.

Bone shakin' vocals

SingingFilter: When I sing in certain keys / registers, my head seems to vibrate, and more. Well, this is odd. I've noticed what when I sing at a certain pitch - for instance, singing "Lua" by Bright Eyes, which is played with a capo on the 7th, my entire head seems to vibrate. And more than one would be used to when singing. I even get a little sick - it seems like my head is a little cold, and tight, and generally sort of quivery. I'm wondering whether I'm singing wrong (very, very possible - I haven't sung fo' real since 4th grade) or maybe it's some sort of resonance, although the resonant pitch for a human skull must be much lower than what I'm singing.

All in all, it's weird, and doesn't help my singing at all. Any general tips about how to sing 'correctly' would be most welcome, too, since I'm just growing into doing (in a new situation, now, in a band).

Thanks all.

Can I register a domain name that isn't me?

What kind of problems would I encounter for registering [myname].com where [myname] isn't actually mine? I'm Alison [Lastname]. I'm a senior in college, studying photography. I'm in the process of building my online portfolio. Obviously, I am going to get the domain alisonlastname.com, but I was also thinking about getting allisonlastname.com (2 L's instead of one) as well. I would have allisonlastname.com redirect to alisonlastname.com. Pretty much every time someone spells my name, they do the 2 L thing. I always correct people, but since the rest of the world seems to prefer Allison over Alison, people tend to automatically go for the 2 L thing, so I'm just trying to make it easy for people to find me.

Since my last name isn't common, I didn't even think that it might be a possibility that Allison Lastname existed, but I googled it, and she does! There's even a picture of her online at her brother's college graduation, and I think she's sort of around the same age as me (she's probably early to mid-20s, I just turned 28).

Now, what happens if I go and register allisonlastname.com and she wants it at some point down the line? Is it even legal for me to register allisonlastname.com? If she wants it at some point, I'd be willing to talk to her about it, but I just don't want to get slapped with a lawsuit or something one day out of the blue. I know, I know, there's a 99% chance that she'd email me and say something like, "haha! There's two of us...can we talk about me getting my name?" but with my luck, I'd end up with the 1% that will automatically go into "screw the one-L Alison!" mode.

Free registration & hosting

Free domain registration & hosting. Hope me. I don't even know if this is possible.

For various reasons, I need the following things:

1) A free domain registrar who won't own the name. What I mean is, someone who will register for free, but let me take over the domain again--for a reasonable, disclosed-up-front fee--when it's time to reregister next year.

2) Free webhosting. Only free for now, I'll be able to move to something that's paid within a couple of months.

3) The ability to put a wiki at the site.

4) An email address would be nice, but only one is necessary.
