I found the fridge and freezer unplugged. Now what?

I found the fridge and freezer in my (6 person) shared house turned off at the plug socket this morning. The freezer temperature had got to -6 degrees C. I read that it should be -18 degrees C. My breakfast milk from the fridge was room temperature. I don't know when the plug had been switched off. My housemates have meat in the freezer. To avoid the risk of food poisoning, should I tell everyone to throw all their food out? If not everything, what should we prioritise getting rid of?

Looking to buy a fridge to fit a small kitchen. Suggestions?

Our previous fridge was on the small side, but certainly not compact; still, even after taking a look at many well-reviewed models, I haven't been able to find any that would fit our kitchen. Could you help us find a moderately respectable smaller-ish fridge? Kitchen space dimensions/etc. inside. [more inside]

Living without a fridge

My fridge is a 115L bar fridge with a small freezer, and it's never particularly full. I've been thinking about getting rid of it altogether. I would like to hear from anybody who successfully gets by without a fridge: any tips and tricks? what did you not realize before you made the transition? anything else I should consider? Should I eat this?

Another one of metafilter's favorite topics. Fridge left open since 7am (CDT) this morning. Just discovered 20 minutes ago, so approximately 5 hours ago. It was only left open a crack because one of the drawers was part way open. Is everything a totally loss? Some things are still cool to the touch. [more inside]

Power's out, how long will the cold last?

Power went out... right as I'd gone to the grocery. I put all the must-stay-cold stuff away anyhow because the stuff I'd bought was worth more than what was already in there. So, it's been opened once, what was put in was still frozen/cold from the grocery. I'm not opening it again. How long can I expect stuff to still be good for? [more inside]

Is there a true counter depth fridge with reasonable width out there?

Too tiny! Too tall! Too deep! Is there a Goldilocks fridge out there that is just right? I need a counter-depth fridge (with freezer, top or bottom) that really is counter depth -- 24-25 inches at the most with door and handle -- without being more than 32 inches wide. Many so-called "counter-depth" fridges I've seen are 29-30 inches deep once the door and handles are included, and even when I find one the right depth, it's very wide, typically 35-36 inches. The best match I've found so far is the LG 349, but it's a full six inches narrower than my current (awkward, too deep) fridge, and the slightly larger version I've seen at a store still seems toy-sized and flimsy inside, while being a little too tall for me at 74 inches. I'm in Canada (Toronto, to be precise).

Fridge cooling woes

We just moved into a new apartment, and our cat promptly decided to hide behind the fridge (~20 year old Inglis System 2000, freezer on top). When we pulled it out from the wall to get her out, we decided to give the back a vacuum. I'm not sure when or how the condenser coils popped out like this but now they won't lie flush with the back again. I'm assuming this is why our freezer is no longer freezing and our food has thawed (as we just moved in, we had nothing in the fridge). Any ideas? Thanks in advance?

how to mount plexiglas on stainless steel fridge?

I have a stainless steel fridge and a toddler who is learning to walk. I want to mount a sheet of plexiglas over the bottom portion of the door to prevent it from getting dented. I would like this to look decent and be non-permanent so I can remove it when we eventually move. Any ideas on how I could do this? All I can think of is using some kind of tape, but I think that would sag after a while. Bonus for suggestions on how to also stick stuff to the plexiglas so that I can post up my kid's artwork (the stainless steel is non-magnetic).

My fridge is failing to cool my food.

The side-by-side fridge in our rental (a GE tfx22zrs, tfx22jrs) has been failing to keep the refrigerator side cool (freezer side works fine). I think I have traced this down to some kind of lightbulb short -- the bulb heats up so much, so fast, I presume it is keeping the food from getting cool; possible fuse problem? Do fridges have user-serviceable fuses? Or is this a compressor problem and the lightbulb a red herring? [more inside]

How cold should my refrigerator be? I've been moving an instant-read thermometer sitting in glass of water around the various shelves, and they all read 40 degrees fahrenheit. But we still sometimes get ice crystals in the stuff we put on the top shelf (near the cooling element). Is this just too cold?
