Help me fall in love with the Internet again

I have reached the end of the Internet. Well, my Internet, anyway. Please recommend some sites that will refresh my surfing experience. I feel like I visit the same 5-10 sites over and over. As you can imagine, it's getting really boring (with the exception of The Meta, of course, which is always marvelous).

So, what cool sites would you recommend for me to try? My interests are eclectic, so I'm open to pretty much anything. Tell me which sites you find wonderful and why.

Thanks in advance!

How can I get an email alert when a web page changes?

I need to automatically refresh a web page and be alerted via email (or run an applescript) when it changes. There are a few commercial apps that do this, but they're Windows based and I'm on a Mac. I'd also prefer something that's freeware. There's also a couple Firefox add-ons which will automatically check a page for changes, but none that I've found allow for an email alert (or to run an applescript).

Script needed to diff and then play sound when refresh reveals tickets are on sale.

W.A.S.T.E. of a question, but I need a script that will perform a diff and play an alert sound when a reload reveals that the HTML page has changed relative to the previous reload. I have firefox set to refresh a page every 30 seconds, but I'd rather not stay up all night waiting for the page to change.

So, is there any kind of script that someone would like to write for me, or one that is preexisting that will play an alert sound once it detects any change in the page?

Bonus points if it works for multiple tabs.

Thanks!

Google Reader, it's not so fresh

Why isn't Google Reader refreshing? I just started using Google Reader. I haven't subscribed to a ton of feeds yet - just AskMe, MeFi, and MeTa, and a couple of blogs. Google Reader hasn't refreshed AskMe for more than two hours, MeFi for more than five, and MeTa for about two. The other feeds are also two or more hours behind. I hit "refresh" or "r" and nothing refreshes.

This happens on both FF 1.5 Windows, and Camino 1.5 and FF 2.0 on Mac OS 10.4.

Am I doing something wrong?

Jumpy slow mouse pointer in one screen

Jumpy mouse in one screen. My mouse pointer does not refresh fast enough in one screen but is fine in second screen. I have an Asus video card based on nvidia 6200. It's driving 2 displays, one optiquest 22", the other NEC 19". The first one is dvi, windows is XP. On first screen, the cursor is very jumpy, it does not refresh often enough. If moved with an average speed, it jumps about every 1/3rd of a centimeter, instead of moving smoothly. On the second display it does jump but very little, the difference is huge. I guess they always jump a little, it should depend on monitor refresh rate unless processor is extremely slow. Here processor is athlon X2 3200. Changing resolutions and color depths does not make any difference. Using Asus or nvidia drivers and various settings in them does not make any difference. Everything else works fine on that large display, including dvd movies - this seems to be related only to mouse cursor. In win2k which I dual boot it seems to work much better, but I don't remember for certain, I used win2k and did not notice anything but after a day in XP I did notice by contrast with the 2nd display. I tried both Asus driver and Nvidia driver, and many various options in either. This is annoying because I work in CAD programs and I have to watch cursor carefully and it's just annoying that it jumps so much. I get the feeling that system is slow even though it's very fast. In the end it's more comfortable to use the 2nd display even though it's so much smaller. Another clue is that it seems to be ok after system is started but I think (I didn't test yet), if you start Autocad it becomes bad and after closing Autocad it stays bad. What could it be?

How can I make myself feel energized?

How can I get myself to feel refreshed & energized after feeling run-down for awhile? I constantly feel overwhelmed with life and thus stressed out and burnt out. I'm looking for advice on how to feel energetic again. I feel sleepy, somewhat sick, and run-down most of the time. I have trouble concentrating a lot, and can fall asleep at the drop of a hat. On the weekends when I don't have an alarm to wake me, I can sleep 14 hours no problem.

I'm in my mid-twenties, working full-time, married, living with my husband & two cats. I have been dealing with depression/anxiety (currently being treated with Wellbutrin and Celexa) and am also working to lose a lot of weight. I feel like I'm too young to feel so stressed and tired.

My diet has been pretty darn good as of late, as I've been losing about 1 lb per week - I've cut out almost all sugar that isn't naturally occurring in fruit and have been getting plenty of whole grains, vegetables, legumes, lean protein, and "good" fats (olive oil, etc). I've been exercising about 4 times a week for about 30 minutes and breaking a sweat.

I thought these things would "fix" me, but I still feel like crap almost all of the time. I still have a lot of weight left to lose, but I don't feel like extra weight alone should make me feel so BAD.

This has gone on for more than a year. I have been working with my doctors who basically have no answer except "depression", but honestly since being on the meds, I don't feel depressed anymore. I feel motivated, and there are so many things I want to do, but I just don't have the physical energy.

My doctor has done tons of blood tests and follow up blood tests. She has tested for lyme, lupus, and a gazillion other things. The only thing that is abnormal is my C-Reactive Protein and another inflammation marker are elevated, but they cannot figure out the cause of that.

I don't know what to do to feel better, but I'm looking for advice as to things I myself can do. I know exercise is important and has in the past made me feel better, but lately it just makes me feel even more run-down.

I was thinking I could take a week off in the spring to try & get my energy back, but I don't know how. Most likely if I took a vacation or a long weekend, I would take naps & read, which is all I ever seem to feel like doing.

Laptop can't resolve the domain name when I first type it in, but it does upon refresh. What the hell is the deal? In the past week it wasnt resolving any domain names that didn't end in ".com", now for all domain names it's resolving them, but only after I refresh (or hit "try again" in firefox). I've researching on the internet, but didn't find anything satisfactory..just a few issues related to BIND on BSD. Anybody have any suggestions?

The only thing that happened about the same time is my trial version of "Spy Sweeper" ran out. OK, fine..but how do I fix it?

Refresh vs. Form Re-submission

Form re-submission woes!

How can I catch page refreshes and prevent form values from being re-submitted? I've read a lot on the subject and tried varying tactics to counteract the problem. From hidden form variables and plain old user education, no methodology has worked quite as well as I had anticipated upon implementation. However, a lot of sites seem fairly successful in protecting against this problem so there must be something I'm missing (well, more than one something).

What am I missing? Does anyone have any tried-and-true methods that they've used? If so, are their any caveats to your preferred method?

(This is particularly for Perl/PHP with Apache and/or IIS. I'm hoping for one solution that can be modularized for varying projects, but anything is appreciated.)

Photoshop refresh issues

Photoshop CS refresh issues with a widescreen monitor in WinXP. Am I the only one who sees this, and is there a fix (besides CS2)? Upgraded from an older HP laptop to a new AMD64 with a widescreen running at 1600 x 1050 native resolution. Suddenly my copy of Photoshop CS refuses to work correctly - changes to the image on screen either don't show up or don't appear until after a very noticable lag (20 to 30 seconds at times). For example when I add text I see no change on screen, and dragging a layer often makes it disappear. Selection tools are useless as I can't see the area that I have selected. Occasionally zooming in or out on the image will force it to refresh, but often with text that doesn't help. This is driving me nuts.

I never saw this problem with my old laptop (smaller screen size, same brand video card, same copy of Photoshop.) I've looked around for a fix but so far have come up empty. Most search results are issues with screen refresh in OSX, not Windows. There is a photoshop extension that is supposed to help with refresh rate lags, I've tried it, it doesn't help me. I really do not want to upgrade to CS2 unless I know it's my only option (monetary issues aside, if I have to do it, I'd like to be sure that upgrading will actually help!)

As far as I know I have no issues with any other programs, just Photoshop (for example, ImageReady gives me no problems at all!). Video drivers are the latest available from my laptop manufacturer. Any help here at all would be appreciated.

Visual Field Distortion

Pizza induced visual field distortion : When I chew - as on a piece of pizza (or whatever) and stare at a computer screen, especially from it distance, I perceive a "ripple" (or a "flicker") on the screen which is congruent with my chewing action. (more inside) Now, I know why this occurs, sort of : when I chew, it increases the pressure in my skull a little and this in turn squeezes or squishes my optic nerve, or maybe my eyeball, or whatever. OK, fine.

But this effect only occurs when I chew and stare at a screen. Why don't I get the same effect when I chew and stare at the wall, or out the window, etc. - in all other cases?

Has anyone else noticed this effect? I know that there's some brain algorithm driving the effect, and I assume that there's an evolutionary reason for this sort of "Steady-Cam" mechanism - and I can guess as to the reasons. But why does the "Steady-Cam" turn off when I chew my pizza and stare at a powered-on CRT or LCD screen ?
