Got any advice for removing a gazillion layers of (probably lead) paint from a hundred-year-old banister, complete with an abundance of balusters? Oh, and a pocket door. [more inside]

I scavenged a chair from the street (oh, how Brooklyn of me) with the overly-ambitious intention of refinishing and reupholstering it. I can figure out how to to remove the seat and replace the fabric, but I'm stuck on several other necessary steps, to the point that I don't even know what terms to Google. Pictures within. Is it possible to "erase" botched engravings on pewter? I know pewter's soft, and was wondering if the area can be made as it was before. It's a lidded stein used as a golf trophy. The man that was doing the previous engravings (by hand) retired. Thanks!
