What might a job recruiter/headhunter be looking for in a cold call?

I'm in company A. Someone from company B in a very similar area to me has emailed to me to talk about something routine, and also to catch up on what I am doing these days. I do not know this person in company B, but they seem interested in my work. Assuming that they might be sounding me out, and also that I have a tendency to over think things, what might a recruiter be looking for in a cold call such as this? Thanks! [more inside]

tips for building up volunteers in a volunteer-averse environment?

A few years ago I started a tool bank, lending tools to charities in the English West Midlands. It has received a lot of support from grantmakers, but there are so few borrows it has been demoralising. I have always sought out volunteers to assist in day to day work and marketing, but never found anyone through any established volunteer centre for the almost two years they have advertised the job descriptions. I am now working on merging the tool bank into a resource library of culinary equipment and tools in Sandwell, the borough next to where I live in Dudley. Despite it being run in conjunction with the council, so a municipal effort available to anyone with a public library card, I worry about not ever being able to find volunteers. What are some volunteer recruitment solutions I could try that have worked for you in a place where initially, it was difficult to create a base? I am engaging with a volunteer management professional, but I also want to have ideas if the library group chooses to not fund her interim role.

What am I, and where should I go?

I write documents and flowcharts, create training programs, conduct training sessions, oversee employee development, manage the intranet, maintain shared documentation, conduct process analysis, administrate process improvement, and do some project management on the side. Now it's time to move on and I'm sitting staring blankly at indeed.com, not quite sure what jobs to search for; knowledge management, technical communicator, training, process improvement? Is there a job which encapsulates these all? Or am I barking up the wrong tree - maybe these skills are pre-requisites for a position I haven't yet considered? [more inside]

What would you consider a red flag when interviewing at a startup?

I was recently recruited for a mid-level role at a young startup (tech in development for several years; company has existed for about a year). My gut feeling about the product and the tech is that it's viable. The market is there, and I myself would use the product. This is not the case for 80% of startup products/ideas that I see. I'm not so sure how I feel about the founders or the results of the first interview. [more inside]

Dream Company wants me -- so why haven't I heard back from my recruiter?

Dream company headhunted me a month ago for dream job(s). They were eager to get to know me the first week, and now, four weeks later, I haven't heard from them at all despite their professed interest in me and desire to get me in for an interview. This is weird because I am uniquely qualified for the jobs they're trying to fill and they sounded desperate. Given the communication history described behind the cut, what should my next steps be? ch-ch-ch-changes: out with the old, in with the new employees

I run a small-scale but pretty profitable business (5 employees). Entertainment agency. I'm very fortunate to both love my job and really really like the people who work for me. I feel positive about our company and the work we do. We're growing all the time. One of them - the administrative lynch-pin/office manager/keeper of all knowledge is moving abroad to join her long-distance boyfriend. I'm gutted and feel she's going to be really hard to replace. Best way to recruit web developers?

My employer is asking me to look into recruiting strategies for LAMP/PHP developers. We've been having bad luck finding appropriate candidates and actually getting them in for interviews (posting jobs on CareerBuilder & CL). I'm not really an HR person (nor am I a tech person), so I've never done this before. He's interested in possibly buying resume access on Monster, CareerBuilder, or Dice -- is one better than the others for this type of thing? Any suggestions for other strategies to use? [more inside]

Web development work in Sydney: where to go ... what to know?

Web development work in Sydney: where to go ... what to know? I'm a web developer, and might be getting laid off from my corporate job in Sydney next year. So, two questions really:
  • What's the best way to find work? Which agencies are the best? Which websites?
  • I have a bit of lead-time, and I should probably be thinking about brushing up on my skills: I've spent a lot of time working on idiosyncratic in-house CMS and maintenance tools which would make you splutter if you saw them. So ... Drupal? JSP? Front-end stuff like JQuery/AJAX? What are the technologies in demand?

How to be a membership chair?

I have recently been appointed the 'membership chair' for a hobby-related organization of which I have been a member for some years. The club president and I have agreed that my duties will consist largely of:

* Contacting members who have lapsed and inviting them to rejoin

* Devising various means of recruiting new members

I have no experience in this sort of work. I could definitely use pointers, suggestions, and especially referrals to any articles or books that may be relevant.

Alterna-gerl needs an alterna-job!

Can anyone recommend a recruitment or temp agency that specialises in placing 'creative' types in Adelaide or Melbourne, Australia? I currently work in Admin and wouldn't mind doing the same job elsewhere, if only it was with people who were more cosmopolitan and less conservative than my current job. I was thinking something in the publishing or entertainment industries but anything associated with this general area is also OK. Ideally I'd be hoping to use my 'in' in the industry to help me further my own agenda: writing, with a specialisation in writing about music and counterculture.
