recruitment business startup... first challenging step?

I have worked in recruitment for all of five months. Having previously run a less than successful but still operating and now growing charity, I missed the security of a regular paycheck. They like my sales experience but are not as experienced in teaching one how to recruit for their sector. I have had a few offers but have not closed a sale in two months for a flat fee recruitment advertising (no headhunting) product they are halfheartedly experimenting with. Out of 22 staff, I am only the only salesperson for it. I do earn a small monthly salary and could earn a commission. Out of left field, a family friend has come forward with a big recruitment opportunity with a software company. I am currently working on a split commission deal with a work colleague on a software role but do no recruiting, only manage the business communication. I feel ashamed about it and feel I could be of better service as an independent recruiter. However, I need some advice about starting up and feel I can't really get an objective account from senior leaders in the field. [more inside]

Evolution of labor markets?

I'm looking for an essay I read a while ago on the evolution of labor markets in the face of increasing competition. It claimed that as competition for good candidates became more intense, there would be a progression in market structure through several stages: (1) open hiring, with companies differentiating themselves via wages and working conditions and eventually increased acceptance of exploding offers; (2) a system of internships to identify good candidates before they formally entered the job market (e.g., most good law students graduate with an offer in hand); and (3) a formalized match system like the national residency match program where all hospitals and students submit their preferences to be resolved simultaneously. It was a non-academic sort of essay, with no game theory or citations. It sounded like an intelligent amateur putting something up on a personal website. It may predate blogging. Hope me please?

How do you get difficult yet uninteresting tasks done?

I've noticed there are a lot of tasks at my company that are important and challenging, but not interesting or glamorous. Hiring and retaining personnel to complete such tasks seems to be a very hard problem. I wonder if there's any research or wisdom about how to approach such problems. Help me, hivemind. [more inside]

How to do 12 half-hour programming interviews in a row?

I am programmer who has done dozens of phone screens and about a dozen on-site interviews. I will soon be sent back to my alma mater to do my first day of "on-campus interviews," which means they will put me in a room for seven hours and parade a dozen candidates through at half-hour intervals. Could anyone with experienced in this sort of thing look over my plan and give me any advice they have? I'm especially concerned about evaluating people fairly under these conditions. [more inside]

How do I find a "real" tech job?

My workplace is in a decline, and I think it's time for me to explore other options. I'm a programmer at heart, an architect and team leader in practice, and a manager in name. Prior to this job I'd had really soul-crushing experiences in consulting, so (for example) I am experienced with but extremely cynical about capital-E "Enterprise" platforms and technologies. I don't want to go back to that world; I want to find a company and a team with a spark of life to it and people with the incentives to help each other out. What's the best way to filter for tech job opportunities that won't sink me back into the muck? [more inside]

Potential Temp Agency Faux Pas, or, PLEASE HELP ME STOP FREAKING OUT

I have been working with a staffing agency who placed me in a really great (contract) job last year, which ended in October. I have been keeping in touch with the rep who was working with me ever since, checking in once a week to see if anything had become available. Last month, my grandmother passed away after a very long illness and I got wrapped up in the various family-related things that obviously came along with that, and therefore I stopped checking in with the rep for a while (it became a much lower priority). At the same time, my friend offered me some extremely low-paying (to the brink of me basically doing it pro bono), intermittent consulting work on a project just to help me keep somewhat busy during the boring slog of unemployment, which at least allows me not to have a huge gap on my resume and my LinkedIn profile. Because this happened right around the time my grandmother passed, and because this consulting work is most definitely temporary and not income-sustainable, I forgot to inform my rep that I'd taken on this work. I am now concerned that I have committed a major faux pas professionally. Help me understand if I have or if I am overreacting. [more inside]

Hiring Black High School Math Teachers

I am the chair of a high school math department in the Chicagoland area (north of Chicago). Our school population is 7% black. Our teacher population is 0% black. I'd like very much to hire a top-notch black math teacher. This teacher would round out our school in many ways, not the least of which being acting as a role model to the 7% of our students. I have tried working through the NAACP, the NABSE, and local college job fairs. So far I have come up with nothing. Any suggestions for what I should do to get more resumes from black high school math teachers?

Trying to find the Green Machine

In the late 1970s the Australian Army made a recruiting film called "The Green Machine". I remember it having some fairly spectacular flying footage by the Army Aviation Corps as well as the usual other stuff. For reasons I'd probably not want to examine too closely I'd like to see it again. Does anyone know of an on-line source? It's not on Youtube as far as I can tell.

We need a jobby job!

Help us find jobs! My wife and I have decided to do things backwards and pick a place to live before we find jobs. We have chosen Raleigh NC. We are moving from Bermuda. What would be the best route towards finding great jobs? Back in the heyday, it was quite easy to put a resume up on Monster or Dice. But now, from what I understand, things have changed. Would we be better off engaging a recruitment agency? I work in I.T. as a web dev / lotus dev / project manager, and my wife is an accountant with SAP experience. To complicate things further we are 1) In Bermuda so face-to-face interviews might be tricky, 2) We would like to travel for 1-2 months after we leave Bermuda. My gut feel is that we might have to move to Raleigh first before getting serious about finding jobs. And before you say we are crazy, 1) we have researched Raleigh and know it's where we want to be, and 2) we have cash to float for a long time. Unfortunately, our professional network is somewhat limited to Bermuda, Michigan, and the Caribbean, so going the 'networking' route might be difficult. Would it be best to research companies in the Triangle and contact them directly? How would you approach finding a job in a specific city?
