Rough waters in early-ish sobriety

Posting for a friend: "My SO is several months sober, after a few decades of alcohol and drug abuse, and is having a rough time of it. They chose sobriety, and often say they're happy to be sober, that they know it's the right choice, etc. Basically, the sobriety was not court-ordered but a result of "enough is enough." They're seeing a therapist regularly, going to meetings, taking an antidepressant...and still feeling crappy. What can we do? [more inside]

Can tantra be therapeutic?

I’ve been seeing a therapist for a while for various reasons, including coming to terms with rape and a generally traumatic sexual history. My issues with sex have basically made any relationships impossible and at this point I’ve been single and celibate for five years. I would like to change this - or at least to feel like I have the ability to have a fulfilling sexual life if I want to. My therapist has suggested that I look into tantra and has recommended a practitioner for one-on-one work and also an organization that runs weekend courses for groups. Is this legit and/or a good idea? [more inside]

How to handle extended illness when your company has no leave policy?

I wrote this question at the beginning of February about how bad my mental health had gotten. Since then, I went to the ER and was voluntarily hospitalized in an inpatient psych unit for a week - I just got out on Wednesday. Since then I've been in a partial hospitalization program, which may go on for another 2-4 weeks. My office has told me that they want me to do everything I need to do to take care of myself and get better, but the official policies are not backing that up. How do I manage my time off? How can my father regain his mobility?

My father, 57 years old, recently had C3 C4 spinal surgery to correct spinal stenosis. As I understand it, there was a narrowing of his spinal cord which prevented spinal fluid and motorneurons from moving freely so before the surgery, he was experiencing loss of feeling in his hand, had an uneven gate, began to have trouble moving his legs and fingers, especially after periods of rest. He was told that some patients regain almost all of their previous ability, but that most experience an end to the decline and regain some percentage of their prior ability. [more inside]

Can mental health issues be serious even if you're not suicidal?

This question in September was me, and months later I am still really struggling, even after a medication change. My quality of life is definitely being impacted, but I just cannot get past the thought that since I'm not suicidal, I'm not psychotic, I've never been hospitalized, I have a job, I maintain a home and hygiene, I have great relationships - all of this means that my mental illness must be pretty minor, all things considered. Pain - it got good to me?

I've been in chronic pain--rarely acute, but constant, flitting about different parts of my body--for years: diagnosis: early Fibro. In early spring, I started getting really bad headaches from clenching my teeth. Not the first time I've had the problem, but never before this intense and for this long. Then about a month ago, I developed lower-back/sciatic pain--again, I've had it before, but never so badly or for so long. The two things didn't overlap much, but they sort of drowned out my regular aches and pains. Now my back problem is clearing up, and I find myself in a panic about not being in pain anymore [more inside]

The phantom joint pain strikes again...

I strained my adductor muscle (groin) in March and rested like a mofo - no exercise at all for probably 10 weeks. The doctor said it looked like a localized injury and that some stiffness would be natural because the repaired muscle grows back a little longer (weird). I've been gradually ramping back up with slow exercise - yoga, dance, etc. - but today after a more strenuous workout I'm feeling a dull ache in my muscle after no pain at all for weeks. Argh. YANMD, but ye who have pulled groin muscles before, does this mean I have hurt myself again, or is some soreness here and there natural? Do you ever feel pain from past injuries?
