I heard a term somewhere that referred to the modern phenomena of sounds being decoupled from what produces them, in the sense that it's no longer a one-to-one relationship between sound and thing. So whereas previously every time you heard a bark you knew it was a dog, now it could be a TV, a computer, or a robot dog. Likewise, a big professional sound system could sound like almost anything. I think the originator was an academic. I distinctly remembering seeing mention of this on wikipedia once. What was that term? Who coined it?

I'm looking for standalone devices to continuously record video and/or audio. I would like to record while biking and when the memory is full automatic overwrite should occur. I.e. I always want to have the last X minutes of the recording ready in case something interesting happens. Anybody know of an affordable solution for this?

I just found out my landlord has been secretly taping our conversations. She uses a tape recorder hidden in her purse. The landlord is in the process of evicting another tenant of the building and has asked the court to bring in tapes of conversations as evidence. The judge gave her forms to fill out so she can get the tape recorder and tapes past security.

What's the price range for a professional music producer for a rock band? We're looking at working with one producer but want to be sure we're getting a good deal.
Are there any questions/features we should be asking the producer about to make sure we're getting a good deal? Right now he's telling us it's about $1500-$2000 per song, is that the going rate?

I'm looking for an affordable recording interface and I think I have it narrowed down to these two M-Audio products,
this one and
this one. From what little I know I heard that firewire is the way to go with an interface, less lag or whatever, is this really that important and what does this mean when it comes to recording? What's the big downside to a USB interface because from what I've noticed is that they're generally cheaper.

I have been using
JamStudio for a while now to quickly throw together backing tracks to practice guitar with. This website is great and highly recommended, but I now want something similar but which is more powerful/flexible, has better audio quality and variety, and which will integrate with my recording software (currently Cubase). Midi based would be perfect. I plan to use this mostly for practicing, but also for some recording.

I'm trying to get better sound quality out of music recordings, I've been using one of those adapters that turn a 1/4 into 1/8 but it's gets really fuzzy sometimes. I'm looking for a better way to hook up instruments to the computer, I've looked at mixer boxes but they have all these onboard equalizer's that I'm not really interested in, I just want a decent transfer quality and not all the bells and whistles. I guess my question is I'm looking for something cheap that will let me hook up something with a 1/4 jack to my computer, and also having a mic input would be a bonus.

So I built a small but first rate recording studio on the back of my property for personal use and to make a little money on the side recording others. Two friends of mine ask to use the space half the week to make money for themselves recording commercial jingles. They have brought in a lot of nice equipment that I enjoy using almost exclusively. They've given me a small amount of money in the past but it's come time to discuss a more professional and fair arrangement of who owes who what.
