I'm a researcher with no film experience, and am beginning to think about an oral history project, which best case would become a short film. The theme is regional accents, so audio quality is important. [more inside]
I'm looking for a camcorder or camcorder/microphone setup to record my band's practices and shows for uploading to YouTube. [more inside]
I would like to dictate memos and documentation when away from my Mac, and then use Dragon to transcribe the recordings. This is in a somewhat noisy environment, similar in volume, tone and variation to a car traveling at a reasonable speed on the highway (HVAC equipment one room over, lots of random rattles and whirs and steady hums.) Not loud, but notable. [more inside]
A few years ago I decided to pick up making electronic music again after about a 10 year hiatus. Now I'm looking for strategies to keep myself doing the work. [more inside]
I've been toying with the idea of getting some sort of CCTV or IPCCTV to keep track of what's going on around my house. Do you have CCTV? What should I be thinking about? [more inside]

We run a small improv theatre company. Potential sponsors and clients always ask about videos of our shows, so we're looking into recording our shows. We're okay on the video side but we can't get good quality audio. What kind of setup should we use? [more inside]
As part of my doctoral research, I will be conducting interviews with Skype for transcription and analysis. I've heard good things about Audio Hijack Pro as a tool to record audio from Skype -- both from online reviews and from faculty mentors. I've installed the latest version of Skype on my MacBook Air and am currently using the trial version of Audio Hijack Pro (I expect to pay for the full version if I can get the demo working). It works, BUT, I am consistently hearing a horrible echo and feedback when I am hijacking the audio on my Skype test calls. Help! (help...help...help...) [more inside]
(1) What's a cheap just plain record player that can output via rca cables? (2) Anyone know any good software or apps for doing that on a PC or mac? Just figuring something might already exist to detect different tracks. [more inside]
I've become curious about the musical potential of the acoustic bass guitar. Does anybody know of any recordings, in any genre, where this instrument is used to good effect? [more inside]
What's the easiest way to record a video on a Mac that can easily allow switching -- or even a split screen -- between a webcam and an application (say, Word)? The idea is to be able to record video of the speaker, type or draw notes that can be on the video, and be able to switch focus from the face to the notes or have both on screen at once, like a teacher with a software whiteboard. Most screencasting software only seems to focus on the screen and doesn't allow easy switching back and forth from the webcam.
I've been asked to write summaries of some recordings of meetings. Problem is, whoever recorded it had the microphone in his shirt or his pocket or something, and there's impossible rustling preventing me from hearing what they're saying half the time! Especially when someone asks a question and they start explaining details. Is there any software I can run these sound files through to reduce some of that?
When I was a kid my parents had a 10 disc (or maybe five disc, 10 sides) album of the Kingston Trio that I'd love to find but I don't know the name of it. I tried to Google it, checked Amazon and iTunes, searched Craigslist, even went through the Spotify Kingston Trio discography and can't find it. Anyone else know what it was? [more inside]
I have an idea for a sculpture that would have a button on it. When the button is pressed, a sound recording would play. There'd be about 10-20 recordings, each about 2-4 minutes long. I know it's possible to do this -- I just don't know how, exactly. What should I be googling? [more inside]

I want to make a series of instructional programming videos. I'm reasonably happy that I have all the moving parts lined up - I know what I want to cover, I have the examples and material ready, I've figured out how to make high-quality video recordings of my desktop and I've got a nice USB microphone. But if there's one thing that my brief forays into video editing have taught me, it's that it can be incredibly time-consuming. Given that I plan on making ~10 hours of content for my first batch of videos, I'd like some advice on doing this efficiently. Specific questions inside. [more inside]

I'm looking for the most bare-bones video cameras that money can buy. I've been searching among security cameras, but what are some other possible searches? Imagine a security camera without the LED lights. As in, I would prefer an analog as opposed to USB output, but cost is more important than anything. The current cheapest security cameras I can find are $28 or so. Do any exist that are perhaps less than $20? [more inside]
I'm looking for software or something that has sounds on it that I can mix together to make songs. Bonus points if I can add tracks from outside that I record myself/find, etc. I have a PC and I'm looking for something that's high-quality and intuitive but not too pricey, say in the $100-$200 range. And also, a pony. Thanks!
I have a very busy, hard to shut up brain and falling (and staying) asleep has always been a problem for me. A few months ago I came across the guided relaxation/hypnosis/meditation programs by Andrew Johnson in the google play store and started listening to them in bed as I fall asleep. They are wonderful. I want more, and I want to be able to do this more comfortably. [more inside]
My wife is a keyboard player (I play guitar) and we are trying to use our new MacBook Pro for our practice sessions. She got her MIDI keyboard to play through Garageband but wanted better piano sounds, so I bought Mainstage 3 for $30 (after Googling the question). Mainstage 3 has much better sounds like Hammond B3, Rhodes, etc. [more inside]

I want to take my friend on a tour of a recording studio in the NYC area to take a friend on for his birthday. Google has come up surprisingly short. I'd prefer a recording studio that has come kind of historical importance, though I know that most of the legendary studios in NYC have moved or closed. If a historically significant studio isn't a possibility, I was hoping to find one that has recorded interesting artists in the alt/indie rock, power pop, or soul genres. [more inside]
Trying to decide what to get, here. I've got an interal 750gb 5400 rm drive in the MBP that very occasionally throws up the dreaded "drive too slow" dialog in Logic at only 6 or 8 tracks of 24 bit 44.1 kHz. [more inside]
Suppose I would like to automatically record and transcribe all conversations that happen around me. Is this technically feasible? What products and services would you use to accomplish this goal? [more inside]
I have a decent microphone and I like recording audio for Librivox and some language learning sites. I would like to extend this into some other areas. Either reading foreign news, blogs, covering a local issue or any type of suggestion one might have. I have some plans for starting a podcast in the future but for now I would like to commit to recording something and posting it regularly for a while. Can be as dull as the conet project or repetitious as David Lynch's weather reports. Ideally content would be public domain, creative commons, or other permissible copyright.
Live streaming video from Conference-setting in Dallas. Advice? [more inside]
I'm looking for a particular recording of Alan Ginsberg reading America. It was on a mix tape I lost many years ago, and the particular moment that stands out is when he says "America I am the Scottsboro boys", someone in the (high as a kite and raucous) audience shouts out "you are the Scottsboro boys!" Any pointers would be helpful, either to purchasable media or to online video.
A while back my sister left a message on my mom's answering machine, saying "Hi mom, we had a baby girl..." and then she goes on to describe the birth of her daughter and how cute she was, basically leaving an audio record of this wonderful occasion. For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to save this recording. [more inside]

The assault occurred in Panama, while I was working for a US-based nonprofit biology field school. I'm Canadian, and never had a contract with this institution. I was assaulted by an American coworker who targets the young women he comes into contact with via this job (and other lines of work, all as a teacher). I have a recording of him admitting what he did, and two recordings of the head of the organization explaining that he wont do anything and that he knows but doesnt care that this person is a predator. The recordings were made without permission. I've been told that the federal funding this organization receives would disappear if I could somehow find that granting agency and contact them with my complaint. What I'd really like to know is whether I could publish my recordings without legal repercussion, or what the outcome might be if I did, regardless. [more inside]

Hi all, I was wondering if you could recommend any podcasts that featured interesting, new and insightful music. Preferably ones that are by musicians or producers/recording engineers. Thanks!

People I talk to on Skype claim to hear static coming from my end. I ran a test in Audacity and I could hear the static as well. The microphone I'm using is an MXL 990 and I'm using and Icicle Preamp (This thing) to connect the mic to my laptop through USB. I'm copying over any and all specs that would help. Here is the link. I've tried disabling my internal mic and that didn't work. Before I got this laptop, I was using a laptop that had XP on it and it worked fine. I did spray febreeze in the room and on the mic so that everything would smell nice (I was trying to clean up the room). I tried using both my internal mic and another USB one and they worked fine. I also tried using a different USB cord to hook up my mic to my laptop and I was told there was static. What should I do? I've been having this problem for a while now and it's starting to get on my nerves. Thanks in advanced.
I would like to know which program is a really good one to record Skype calls. I have tried some but not sure which one to purchase. Maybe you could recommend a free one.

I suddenly realized this morning that of all the recordings of Philip Glass I've got, I don't have Einstein on the Beach. And now I want to listen to it. If Amazon had only one or two versions, I'd just buy one and be done with it, but there are over half a dozen different productions to choose from... Which one should I buy, if I'm only going to buy one? [more inside]
