I've got a large collection of (mostly electric/electronic) instruments, and even some people to play them. The one hole in my musical setup is recording. I'm a wind instrumentalist originally, so I know little of the ways of preamps and what have you. Help me get started recording on my computer! Instrumentation details inside.

How big a problem is USB microphone latency for multitrack musical recording? i.e. How difficult will it be to do tight vocal overdubs with a straight-to-USB mic? What about with a mic->XLR->USB interface->Mac setup?

I need to record a significant amount of voice using my PC at home. I've picked up a couple of consumer-level, $20-$40 computer microphones (tried two different cheapie Logitech models) but haven't been overly impressed.
Recommend something better? Assume I know virtually nothing about microphones or associated mic lingo, and that this mic would be used exclusively for single-person voice recording (no interview situations, and no musical instruments, etc.)

I'm looking to record on my PC ( I have adequate Hardware) some music using guitars, bass, vocals, and some other instruments. I need suggestions for a good software program to use (money is not a problem) for the basic recording/tracking and a good program to create drum tracks from scratch. Please see extended explanation for more details.
