Problems with recording DVD's.
Do I need a cleaner? or a different machine? I get lousy recordings, some of the time. One and a half years ago I bought a reconditioned Toshiba DVD and VCR Recorder/Player. D-VR3SU/ I basically like it, it was relatively easy to learn how to use it, though that took a while. My old VCR had died, and it made sense to me to go digital, but I have a lot of tapes I wanted to copy. And I was busy. For a while, it seemed to work fine, but many of the copies i didn't watch, so it was hard to tell. [more inside]

What's the best DVD recorder (hopefully with a VCR as well) which could capture a 2-hour movie from the cable box with the highest quality?

I have recently bought a Toshiba DVD/HDD recorder. It is hooked up to basic cable (no sat or hi-def) and I can use the TV Guide service to pick which programs I wish to record. The only problem is for some reason our local community cable station is not on the TV Guide grid so I can't record anything off of it. I receive the channel just fine.
I've looked at different things throughout the user guide but cannot find anything on how to get the channel onto my TV Guide grid. Is there a way to do this?

Why does the manual on my new DVD/VCR recorder say "do not install NEAR any heat sources such as radiators,..or other(including amplifiers that produce heat)"? I just bought a Toshiba D-VR3SU and if I put it in place of my old VCR it is about 2" from my amplifier. Well the amp gets warm, but I can't feel any heat more than 1/4" away. Do I really need to rearrange all the stuff to avoid this? The manual says this twice! [more inside]

I am thinking converting bunch of VHS tapes recorded in LP format to DVDs. These are 6 hr tapes I think. I was looking at the option of those combo units that come with the DVD recorder and VCR units. I was wondering if somebody can tell me how do these units deal with 6+ hr long video tapes ? do they automatically break the content up into separate DVDs or can they compress the content enough to fit into one DVD ?
thanks
