Where can we get excellent local coffee and snacks and a great vegetarian meal while in Chicago/Antioch next week? [more inside]
So, I was born at a summer camp (well, in a nearby hospital, but that was where we lived when I was born). Since then, there have been 7 other kids born there, and as the oldest I'd like to give them all something as a sort of "welcome to the club" gift. But what?? Requirements inside... [more inside]
I've enjoyed how recent video games have featured old bluegrassy/folksy hymns. Any recommendations for further exploring this sound? [more inside]
I just re-watched the 2002 film Insomnia. It was (still) great, and now I'd like recommendations for more things like it. [more inside]
Can you recommend shows or books that act as great "love-hate" letters deconstructing and showing off the flaws in a particular idea or genre while also being loving examples of the genre? [more inside]
How do I pick the right therapist to help with my anxiety, stress, indecisiveness, and perfectionist tendencies? What kinds of therapy/techniques/approaches might be most helpful? How do I quickly assess whether to stick with someone or look elsewhere? What are reasonable expectations of how much I can improve in therapy and how quickly? I'm terrible at making decisions-- I need help! (Especially since we want to start trying for kids in a few months so I feel real urgency to make progress quickly to feel comfortable going ahead, for both my and the kid's sake.) DC-area, FYI. ISO: Nonfiction podcasts, spread over multiple episodes, not Serial but in that vein of long-form audio storytelling. Help! [more inside]
Looking for more iOS game recommendations according to specific requirements. "Games that are more like toys" might be one place to put it. Update on this question. [more inside]
A close friend and I want to celebrate our birthdays together this winter and are looking for suggestions for a short getaway somewhere near New York City, Boston, or in between. Any recommendations, hivemind? [more inside]
I commute 2 hours round trip, 4 days a week. Sometimes I listen to music, but mostly I like to listen to audiobooks. I'm just about out of ideas. What are some great, really long audiobooks or podcasts I might like? I'm into horror that makes me think, character-driven sci-fi, fantasy, paranormal thrillers (NOT of the vampire romance genre), paleo-lifestyle, and cool/funny non-fiction. [more inside]
Books, websites, message boards, pamphlets, magazines, any resources at all! [more inside]
Anne Carson is an oft-recommended poet/writer here on Ask.Mefi, but if she's your starting point, then where do you go? [more inside]
Recently I've been all about Sam Cooke's Live at the Harlem Square Club, Etta James Rocks the House, and James Brown Live at the Apollo. Can you recommend other live soul or R&B recordings that have the same kind of raw energy?
I want your book recommendations. I have just finished watching the first season of The Americans, a TV series about two Russian spies who live as an American couple with two children during the Cold War, and was surprised that I loved it a lot. I want more of that, but I don't usually love this kind of tv series. So I thought, instead of looking for other tv shows like this, I could try to find some books that I like. [more inside]
I really like the music on this Ned Rifle teaser, for the upcoming Hal Hartley film. What else would I like? [more inside]
My question is two-fold, really. First, please recommend to me all of your favorite titles on the history of science, math, technology, and medicine. Secondly, how do you go about searching for good books in these topics? My favorite booksellers don't have a "history of science" search tag, unfortunately. Some of my past favorites and extended explanation below the fold. [more inside]
On the excellent album Urban Cuban by P18, there was a secret track. After about 5 minutes of silence, it was appended to the last track, and wasn't shown on the cover. I now found it on youtube, here it is. But I can't find the words anywhere... I'd be grateful if a Spanish speaker helped me out! Information about the origin and style of this song and similar artists would also be welcome, I'd love to find more like it.
I find myself in the Theater District in NYC for the evening with two coworkers. Where should we eat? [more inside]
I need new music in my life. [more inside]
Just got Canadian Netflix - loving it. But I need some help choosing what to watch this winter. Must satisfy both me and my guy.... [more inside]
I have read all the AskMe answers describing why a fee-based financial advisor is the way to go. The Mr and I want to get advice on planning to pay off our credit cards, save for a home, and plan for retirement in the next 20 years (we are approaching 50). Can you recommend any good financial advisors in the Seattle area that you or someone close to you has worked with? If it would help figure out if someone is a culture fit, we are Gen Xers both from income-strapped childhoods but who are doing reasonably well in the tech industry, no kids, live in the city and don't want to move to the suburbs, have a vaguely hipster lifestyle with lots of foodie activities and travel. I have already seen this thread but it is 7 years old.
I'm in my late thirties and feeling stalled out on new music. My all time favorite musical artist is Tori Amos. I also love Morrissey and Kate Bush. More details, if needed, under the fold. [more inside]
We need guidance on a few issues related to getting a car for our family. First of all, what kind of car makes sense for our needs? Second, should we buy or lease that car? [more inside]
My family and I are looking to watch some Westerns, but we are nearly complete newbies to the genre (other than what can be gleaned from culture white knowledge). We've watched High Noon and Red River, but so far that's about it. Can you give us some recommendations of films to start with?
As a result of a series of events, it looks like I will be driving my boyfriend's older Bronco as a daily vehicle for a while. Before I start doing this, the Bronco should be tuned up and given a once-over and determined to be mechanically sound. I don't have an existing relationship with an auto mechanic. Can you recommend one in Portland, Oregon? [more inside]
Tomorrow night is the first night of my 2-month stay in San Diego. Please direct me to the finest tacos in the land. [more inside]
Recently, I've been interested in multimedia featuring aspects of black comedy or cynical characters in otherwise mundane settings. Searching on my own is more or less inefficient and I'm looking for any recommendations which fall into this category. [more inside]
My mom dropped out of high school when she was 15 and never reads for pleasure. She (inexplicably) started reading the Hunger Games and devoured the trilogy in two weeks. As far as I know, that's the only book she's ever completed. I'm looking for something that she'll enjoy on the same level of the Hunger Games trilogy. I've tried to figure out what it is that she likes about the trilogy but she can't really say why she enjoyed them so much. She just says she just couldn't stop reading them.
I like dark and/or intriguing television shows. I like shows with interesting characters and long pay offs. What I do not like are any sudden scenes with violence against women or children. I have access to all counties of Netflix but no other streaming services. What can I watch? [more inside]
As I approach my fifties and confront the reality that parts of my body are wearing out and will never be young and resilient again, I turn to the arts for deeper philosophical understanding of this aspect of the human condition that I am facing. I'd like recommendations of fictional treatments of physical aging which are realistic but compassionate. Guidelines and caveats behind the fold. [more inside]
Purchasing a new iMac, looking for accessories recommendations. [more inside]
I spend 10+ hours per week commuting, 40+ hours wearing headphones at work (open-plan office: boo!), and ANOTHER 5+ hours wearing headphones at the gym. As such, I plow through an absolutely obscene volume of podcasts. I'd like some recommendations for more (lest I be forced to spend even a single second alone with my thoughts). To help you get an idea of my preferences, here are a few lists: [more inside]
I find that I tend to like new music most when someone explains to me why it's interesting and important. That is, I'm more likely to enjoy [random genre for which I have a narrative] than [more music like what I already enjoy, but without a narrative]. And most of my favorite music is stuff that was shared with me by someone who really, really liked it. What do you really, really like right now? And why? [more inside]

I like to think that I have eclectic taste in music... but the one major hole in my repertoire is the (vast!!) field of Classical Music. What can you recommend I give a spin? [more inside]
Just saw and really liked The Lunchbox. What are some other quirky, intelligent, modern romantic comedies? International titles appreciated, but not at all necessary.
I need recommendations for movies or shows to watch with my boyfriend, specifically lighthearted goofy comedies and musicals. [more inside]
Help me fill my Kindle with vacation reading! I like well-written doorstop SF, urban fantasy, spaceship books, epic fantasy, deep complicated books but also joyful romps, complicated prophecies that manifest in unusual ways, great worldbuilding, etc. Romantic elements are fine but I'm not as into stuff where the plot is a thin scrim to hang over endless sexy sex. And as a lifelong SF reader, I have now officially read enough books without women in them, so only books that include solid female characters (as opposed to braid-tugging smurfettes). Things I have loved under the cut. [more inside]
I get an email every month from Amazon with their editors' "Best Books of the Month." I always find some good recommendations there in a number of categories, and I'm hoping for more. Are there other websites that offer curated lists of new books on a monthly basis? [more inside]
What comics on Marvel Unlimited should I read? I asked how to read Captain America a couple months ago and read through the Brubaker run and enjoyed a lot of it. I'm looking for more recommendations for what to read that's up on the Marvel Unlimited site-- I'm not really interested in buying issues that aren't up yet. [more inside]
A friend will be in hospital over shabbat and asked me if I could send her links of things she can print out this afternoon and read over shabbes. She is super smart but realized that the serious intellectual/political essays and articles she'd printed are not what she is feeling like. She wants short, fun, easy, diverting, distracting. We're in the beginning stages of planning a vacation to Toronto later this year. So far, all the hotels I have looked at online have been surprisingly expensive. Does anyone have suggestions for clean, safe, private (not hostels) hotels or B&Bs located either conveniently to interesting parts of the city (for tourists), or close (safe 5-10 min. walk) to public transportation to attractions? While I am at it, while we've done some research on our own, ideas for not-to-be-missed sights, museums, bookstores, or other attractions (for a middle aged, bookish, art-museum frequenting, ethnic food loving, but only moderately-fit couple) appreciated. Thanks!
Recently someone on the blue pointed me to Fosterhood, a blog written by a foster mom and I was obsessed--read the 270+ pages of archives in about 3 days. I'm looking for other similar blogs, but googling for 'top recommendations' of parenting blogs hasn't exactly found me what I want. [more inside]
Over in this thread, Pope Guilty recommended Rat Queens, and it occurred to me that I haven't paid attention to any comics that weren't manga in ages. [more inside]
I want to read novels about migration, trade, and globalization in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries -- I especially loved Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh (and its sequel River of Smoke) and The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell and would love to find more novels along these lines. [more inside]
I am looking for a psychiatrist in or near Providence, one who specializes in eating disorders or alcohol abuse. Has anyone been helpful to you? Recommendations for psychologists appreciated as well.
Our nephew will be attending the Kelley (sp?) Business School of the University of Indiana at Bloomington. He will not have a car, and will be living in the dorms. Mrs. W and I would like to get him some gift certificates to nice eateries within walking distance. What restaurants do you recommend?
