I'm enjoying the breathlessly ridiculous tone and pace of Dr. McNinja, which I think does a great job of avoiding the unstoppable-force vs. unmovable-wall dynamic of mainstream superhero comics. It plays fast and loose with everything, and has a fine sense of the absurd. It is only occasionally problematic (racist, homophobic) in its juvenile sensibilities, which is way better than most of its competition. What movies, books, and comics are comparable?
I'd like to get some good mystery movie recommendations from the 80s on. It's OK if they veer toward the thriller, like Michael Clayton, ridiculous like Ford Fairlaine, noirish like Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, or are a more standard outing with a strong, interesting, well developed detective lead like Zero Effect. Drawing room mysteries totally A-OK too. Super bonus points if I can stream them now on Hulu plus or Netflix.

I had an urge yesterday to read a fantasy novel (or sci-fi, sure) about a young, powerless, and reluctant hero(ine) being caught up in events larger than them and growing as a person. I went to the bookstore and didn't really find anything that seemed appropriate. Recommendations? [more inside]
So I listened to Destroyer's Rubies and thought it was perfect, except for the irritating need they feel to force awkward, thoughtless rhymes into the lyrics. [more inside]
