Asking for a friend. Is there a recommendation engine for television shows that you use and get good results from? I suggested that my friend ask Metafilter for recommendations, but he said that wouldn't work for him. He just wants recommendations powered by algorithms, he doesn't want to try asking people online. Also he is not a Netflix member and doesn't want to sign up.
My wife is having surgery this month which comes with a likely long recovery period. To help get her through this time we are looking at stocking up on new TV series and podcasts to keep her mind occupied during this time (aka electronic content!). What gripping-crime-drama TV series or that's-a-cool-idea-I-never-heard-about-before podcasts would you recommend? [more inside]
If I like(d) The Babadook, Confessions, Under the Skin, Gone Girl, and Welcome to Night Vale, what should I read/watch/listen to next? [more inside]
Just got Canadian Netflix - loving it. But I need some help choosing what to watch this winter. Must satisfy both me and my guy.... [more inside]
I'm sick. I'm watching a lot of Netflix. Specifically, I've been watching a lot of Toddlers and Tiaras. At first I didn't know what had come over me, but I think...I just like watching kids get interviewed about their lives? Even if their lives are ridiculous? I'm in my early thirties and I'm also super into those AT&T commercials so maybe it's a biological clock thing, but I'm too exhausted to second-guess myself about it. I know John & Kate + 8 exists, but that's just as gross and exploitative as T&T, as far as I can tell. I loved the 7 Up documentaries and also enjoyed Babies. What other recommendations for reality TV/documentary film about kids, pitched to adults, do you have for me? Bonus points if it's online. Thanks!
I really like the necklace that Lisa Kudrow's character wore on the season premiere of season 3 of Web Therapy (image inside). Where can I find something similar? [more inside]
I'm going through a heavy streak of sadness (seasonal change/life issues/past issues) along with some extreme fatigue. I'm looking for engaging distractions that make the really bad days bearable. Books/TV/Movies, etc. [more inside]
I just got a new 60" TV and am looking to get a stand to go with it to replace my current rickety setup. Any help or recommendations appreciated! [more inside]
My 10 and 8 year old daughters adored The Nr. 1 Ladies Detective Agency (the TV series). What other made-for-adults movies or TV could we watch together? [more inside]
I've always thought King Missile's Failure was a pretty good depiction of the kind of intrusive, self-defeating thoughts that characterize depression. The recent FPP'd game Depression Quest does something similar. What are some other works that are reminiscent of the experience of having depression or another mental illness (as opposed to depicting characters with the illness?)
Seeking the best stories, across all genres, about coming to terms with the world in the early adult years.
What are the best stories that feature young adults coming of age/coming to terms with life's imperfect realities? By "young adults" I mean "adults who are young," probably roughly 19-30, not "young people who are becoming adults." This maturing process can be central to the work or peripheral. One example: "The Great Gatsby." Short stories, novels, nonfiction, film, television and any other genre are all welcome.
French tv & movie recs for someone who wants to be entertained but also get used to the language? [more inside]
Recommend me TV shows which were consistently good throughout their run and had a proper, satisfying ending. [more inside]
I feel as if I have watched all the good TV that exists... (on Hulu/Netflix/YouTube/Vimeo/VBS.tv) help prove me wrong please! I like shows like Californication, The Wire, Sons of Anarchy, a lot, but when it comes down to it I'll also watch stuff like Shark Tank, Top Chef, Bones, Lie to Me... anything even vaguely interesting. [more inside]
If I wanted to watch Fringe, what episodes should I watch If I don;t want to watch a lot of boring monster-of-the-week stuff? This list seems like a good starting point, though I'll happily include episodes that are watchable or good rather essential to the overall series mythology. For bonus points, which disks of the DVD library should I get from the video store to see the good episodes?
Please recommend some TV shows and other forms of storytelling that are in a very specific and possibly just now emerging genre? [more inside]
Please recommend some good television with brilliant characters and no cliffhangers. [more inside]
What are the best episodes of Star Trek? Except I don't care so much about the mythology, I'm just looking for good acting, good writing, and universal subject matter. Any series is fine, though to give you an idea Deep Space 9 is my favorite. [more inside]
With a nice high speed connection now installed at home, I'd like recommendations for finding sci-fi/fantasy TV shows that I can download legally and freely via torrent, that I would not typically have already seen on American cable. [more inside]
I need help choosing my tv. This is my second really expensive purchase, and I know a lot less about TVs than I do computers. Help me decide between 2 models of different brands, or suggest better! Also where to buy from recommendations! [more inside]
Need some Meta-recommendations: what should I watch next? [more inside]
As a lay...very lay...student of Roman Republic and Empire, and anticipating the upcoming HBO/BBC series Rome with relish, I'm reading everything I can get my hands on about both Republic and Empire. Currently I'm reading an abridgement of The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire I just inherited. What next? [insert Latin for "more inside" here].
I'm in love with anything and everything that Aaron Sorkin has worked on, but I've run out of stuff to watch. Any suggestions for what else I might like? [more inside]
