Seeking recommendations for international shipping/moving companies. I have a small household's-worth to ship from California to the UK (no furniture that's worth keeping, but a large studio full of stuff). There are many companies online but I know from friends' experiences that these waters are shark-infested.

Asian Ball Jointed Dolls Filter -- Can you recommend a reputable American seller/dealer, and what has been your experience with them (the vendor)? It seems like the only ones I can find are foreign companies and I'd rather buy from someplace stateside if I can, unless I'm confident enough in them from recommendations.. [more inside]

I need to buy a new cell phone. It should have a text keyboard, work with a higher-speed EDGE/GSM network and most of all sync (address & calendar) + act as a bluetooth modem for my Powerbook
. That last bit is a problem apparently: I am having trouble finding good actual info on which phones can do this. [more inside]

I recently sent out several job applications that required letters of recommendation from a professor. The professor's secretary sent me a box of letters that were sealed, mail-merged, and addressed to each recipient, with the intention that I drop the letter inside the application package. (This is standard operating procedure, as far as I know.) I ended up not sending a few applications for which I received letters because the recipients later indicated that no positions were available. The application period is now over and I was not offered a position. I will not reuse these letters in the future. May I ethically open the remaining sealed envelopes and read the letter?

I have been asked to write recommendation letters for an undergrad who is applying to grad schools. Should I just automatically use a separate sheet, or should I use their form if they provide a lot of space? Any general tips for the structure of the letter? [more inside]

My 11 yr old has iron deficient anemia related to colitis. I have been giving him a liquid iron supplement but it makes him feel nauseous. I have also tried pills - same result. I've tried administering multiple small doses - same result. Diet is as iron rich as I can make it. Does anytone have any suggestions as to how to increase his iron intake without this annoying (and uncomfortable) side effect?

I want to buy some speakers for an Ipod. Altec Lansing and Bose have both made speaker sets that use the docking port, so that's kind of cool, but are the speakers worth it? The Bose ones in particular are $300, which seems really high. Anyone have any experience with these? Or is it just better to buy some regular powered speakers and plug them into the earphone jack?

On the "I can't remember what book this was..." kick, I've been trying to find a book from years ago that was so bad that it was phenomenal. It was sci-fi that began with the premise that whales and dolphins could speak human languages. We discovered this when a dolphin being trained for the Russian military finally broke and began speaking to humans as it feared for its life (I think). The book then goes on to silly detail about different cetaceans and how they talk (Blue whales being stupid and inarticulate, orcas talking in something resembling old english saying "Ye of the lande" and such - yes, the extra e was added in on some of those words). The whole thing comes to a head as we attempt to make contact with giant Jovian Space Whales and to do so construct our own gigantic robotic space whale with the brain of a blue whale.
I know this sounds like a crack-trip, but I REALLY want to find this book so that I can give it to a fellow marine ecologist as a gift for christmas. It's the funniest thing EVER.
