Can I make paella with whole grains? I've found a paella recipe that I love, but I generally try not to eat white rice. So I'm wondering if I can make it with spelt or farro instead. I would just experiment with the recipe, but the ingredients are kind of expensive, and I don't want to end up throwing the whole thing out because the grains didn't cook up right. Anyone cooked this sort of thing or had it in a restaurant?

I need a great appetizer recipe for the annual contest at a holiday cocktail party. There will be serious amateur foodies in attendance. I'm terrible at design, so I'm not even going to try to win Best Presentation. What would you make if you were trying for Best Savory, Best Sweet, or Best Overall? A great drink recipe is a possibility, too--last year my homemade eggnog was runner up for Best Sweet (there was no "Best Boozy" category).

I was looking at an Icelandic book of recipes from 1858 that is largely based on Danish cookbooks and in it there's a recipe for "whiskey" which is made from tea, sugar, lemonjuice and white wine. This isn't terribly similar to glühwein or glögg, but not entirely dissimilar. My question is, does anyone know why this is referred to as "whiskey" in the recipe book? Has anyone heard any kind of European mulled wine referred to by that name? Or know another name for mixed wine and tea drinks? I've put the recipe inside. [more inside]

Somebody left a crazy old battered aluminum bundt cake pan on my doorstep, all neatly packaged and wrapped and tied up with li'l ol' lady knots. Now, on my own I would have lived my whole life without ever buying or acquiring a bundt cake pan. I don't even get bundt cake. Why the hole in the middle? It's never made any sense to me. However, Fortuna has apparently decided I need a bundt cake pan, so I've decided to roll with the fate thing and make a bundt cake. OK, so yesterday I stumbled upon a Filipino supermarket and on a whim I bought a jar of coco jam. It is not quite what I expected: extremely thick, extremely sticky, extremely sweet; like a very solid caramel; not strongly coconutty. I don't think it's going to spread on toast! So: any suggestions for how to use or cook with the stuff?
