I need a great appetizer recipe for the annual contest at a holiday cocktail party. There will be serious amateur foodies in attendance. I'm terrible at design, so I'm not even going to try to win Best Presentation. What would you make if you were trying for Best Savory, Best Sweet, or Best Overall? A great drink recipe is a possibility, too--last year my homemade eggnog was runner up for Best Sweet (there was no "Best Boozy" category).

I was looking at an Icelandic book of recipes from 1858 that is largely based on Danish cookbooks and in it there's a recipe for "whiskey" which is made from tea, sugar, lemonjuice and white wine. This isn't terribly similar to glühwein or glögg, but not entirely dissimilar. My question is, does anyone know why this is referred to as "whiskey" in the recipe book? Has anyone heard any kind of European mulled wine referred to by that name? Or know another name for mixed wine and tea drinks? I've put the recipe inside. [more inside]

I have been using seasoned salt lately, and noticed that they mostly share a combination of paprika, onion, pepper, chili powder, etc. So I was wondering, what's your absolute favorite, game-changing seasoned salt, the one that turns something bland into a dish that you impress your friends with? It can be a commercial or DIY recipe, of course. [more inside]
Somebody left a crazy old battered aluminum bundt cake pan on my doorstep, all neatly packaged and wrapped and tied up with li'l ol' lady knots. Now, on my own I would have lived my whole life without ever buying or acquiring a bundt cake pan. I don't even get bundt cake. Why the hole in the middle? It's never made any sense to me. However, Fortuna has apparently decided I need a bundt cake pan, so I've decided to roll with the fate thing and make a bundt cake. It is obviously your destiny to share your most fabulous bundt cake recipes and thereby unite our mystical bundt experiences for all eternity. Some restrictions apply... [more inside]

OK, so yesterday I stumbled upon a Filipino supermarket and on a whim I bought a jar of coco jam. It is not quite what I expected: extremely thick, extremely sticky, extremely sweet; like a very solid caramel; not strongly coconutty. I don't think it's going to spread on toast! So: any suggestions for how to use or cook with the stuff?

A soybean roaster has just given me a bag (about a pound) of freshly roasted, shelled peanuts, with skins still on. They are unsalted, somewhat larger than usual Spanish peanuts. Coincidentally, I'm probably going to meet a friend tonight, so how should I prepare these for eating with beer? Should I boil them, heat them in microwave, something else? I have various kinds of salt (Jane's, Lawry's, lemon pepper), Nawlins cajun seasoning, parmesan.

I have a small collection of cookbooks that I'd like to digitize with the goal of making them searchable. I am fine with destroying the physical books in the process, e.g. cutting off the binding to make the book easier to scan. What is the best way to go about this? My initial idea is to scan the books with an auto-sheet feeder (hence losing the binding) and use OCR (Acrobat Pro) to yield searchable PDFs. I use a Mac, but have access to PCs. I tried this suggestion but the results weren't thorough or viewable enough for me.
