I'm looking for an example of a common chemical reaction in which a specific combination of a few reactants yields one product, but the introduction of one additional reactant yields an entirely different product. This is for the purpose of a literary metaphor. The less esoteric the reaction, the better (i.e. if it consists of commonly recognized substances that would be helpful).
My cat itches like crazy( his rear back) . He was given prednisone for a few days but that is not the solution. Did anyone had some issue with the cat scratching his/her rear back?
Despite using mostly products on my face that I've used before, I have a horrid red blotchy rash all over my face. Is it a particular combination of ingredients that's made this happen? And how should I make it better? [more inside]
I have never had an allergic reaction before so I don't know what to do. I just had hives that lasted for 2 weeks. I went to the doctor and they gave me some shots and it was gone in a day, but it came back the second week - I kept taking my meds so the hives are mostly gone now. Some spots were still kind of itchy but its mostly just dark marks on my face. I was wondering if anybody knows how to remove these dark spots on my face because I really feel uncomfortable looking at the mirror and seeing myself like I'm looking at a moon. [more inside]
In a professional situation someone tried to bully a number of people, including me. I lost my temper, not badly, but I got angry and said silly things. (well true things said in a silly way, all now apologised for) The disappointing thing is, my outburst was counter productive and unnecessary. I was right, so right, and if I had stayed cool, and responded calmly I would have been able to completely control the situation. [more inside]

When I hear a baby crying I feel like I am getting sliced open with a scalpel. It is totally fight or flight. What the hell is going on with me? This is more than yuppie griping about having dinner ruined. It is not just annoying but harmful to brain chemistry. What is going on w me.
YANMD, but MD(ermatologist) can't see me until October (!), thanks to some excellent health insurance. Last summer I started, seemingly out of nowhere, having a very odd and very severe reaction to the sun on my face - whiteheads, all over, almost literally in crops all over my face. If you picture a person's skin being almost completely swapped for whiteheads, that's along the lines of what I had (not on eyelids, etc, but it hurt and felt horrific). It might be getting worse, I can't get to see a dermatologist, and I work outside in the summers - is there any help for me this summer? [more inside]

When someone yells at me, or tells me I've screwed something up (oddly, in my profession these two events seem to be somewhat mutually exclusive) I get a physical reaction. My throat constricts to the point that it becomes sore. I get dizzy. My brain turns into jello. What's going on and can I train myself out of this?

When I'm sober and attempting to kill a fly, I can't hit it in time. When I'm tipsy, I swat it easily. In reading and conversation, I make connections sooner when drunk than when sober. I've always heard that alcoholism slows reaction time ... so what gives? NOTE: My drunken spelling and grammar errors definitely increase when drunk. Are various functions affected differently by alcohol?
