Cherry soul music

I am seeking classic R&B, soul, reggae, or even blues songs that feature the word cherry I have a radio show that plays old R&B and soul with a smattering of other stuff that I like. I want to do a show featuring songs that highlight the word cherry. I am willing to span a wide range of popular music as long as the song would go well with a mix of Sam & Dave and Otis Redding. That means, while Warrant is a fine band, Cherry Pie is right out. Got any suggestions?

Ironic R&B/hip-hop?

I'm preparing a lesson on irony and I'd like to illustrate the concept with a song. Problem is, my students are more interested in R&B and hip-hop than in my boring old-person rock and roll. Can you name some (fairly current) R&B/hip-hop songs that use irony? I'm thinking, like, "Born in the USA"-style irony -- nothing too subtle.

Put a hat on my earwig.

Who sings the soul/r&b song that goes something like "They've gone on". The singer longingly asks, "Where are my friends? Where have they gone?" Then, among the names of great musical talents he mentions, he says, "James Brown...he's gone on."

I heard it on the radio today and can't find it anywhere. Please help!

Name that song: "I gave you extra cheddar"

Song identification filter: Presumably popular song: "I gave you extra chedda" in an R&B/rap song? I was listening to the radio yesterday, something I don't do often, and this terrible R&B/rap song came on. The rapping was so bad it was laughable and now I need to find it. The song was a "why did our relationship go bad?" type of song with a moderately slow beat, one line in particular that I remember went something like "I thought I treated you right / I gave you extra cheddar" and the song alternated between a not-so-bad R&B singer for the chorus and some awful monotone rapping. Both vocalists involved were guys; I think I remember the artist's name being a full name with a few syllables to it (Jesse McCartney), presumably the singer and the rapper was credited as a featured performer maybe?
Thanks in advance for any googling you do! I've tried and to no avail. It's not anything by 50 Cent or Chamillionaire in case you try similar searches to mine.

I've just discovered Kutiman on YouTube. Does anyone else come close to his mashup genius? He is an Israeli musician who apparently is new to his craft, but his work is awesome! The samples linked are of the R&B/Funk variety, not sure if he does anything else, but I love this stuff. If you know anyone else even close to being this talented, please advise. Listen to this and this and this.
Seeking new R&B with an old Motown feel

I need some new music that will fit well with Motown and Stax old R&B & soul. I have a radio show that features old soul music and old R&B. There is also is some funk and jazzy stuff with a smattering of blues and reggae. But really, the backbone of the show is a cross between Stevie Wonder and Otis Redding.

I am seeking music from new artists that will fit in this show. I know my old stuff really well but I am completely disconnected from what is coming out today. I am looking for current music that captures a Motown sound or the super funky Stax sound.

An obvious choice is Amy Winehouse's Back to Black album. I find that Ronson produced music has that flair to it so I have played a bit of Santogold and such on my show. I have also played some music that he used to mix into his stuff. I really liked a remix of Dee Edward's "Why Can't There be Love" by Pilooski so well done remixes are welcome. I also liked Band of Bees. Any other suggestions?

Fantasy Football Newb Query

Why are so many RBs ranked above QBs who scored more fantasy points? I'm new to FF and working on my draft strategy, and I'm wondering why so many sites rank several RBs above Brady, Romo, and Manning, when those three look to have scored a lot more fantasy points last year.

For instance, using Yahoo default scoring for 2007, those three QBs had 444, 328, and 304 points respectively. LaDainian Tomlinson had 295 points, but his is somehow ranked #2 overall for 2007, and is the projected #1 for 2008.

On Yahoo, the "Actual" ranking does not match the scored points, and on a lot of sites projected rankings do not correlate with projected points.

Or so it seems to me. What am I missing?

what are some excellent places on then internet to talk about music?

i want to find some good music forums online. i'm a musician/dj, and i live in the 3rd world. thus, i dont get to hear a lot of new music in random places (clubs, stores, record shops, radio stations etc) like i would in a big city or college town. the best way i've found to keep up with various music scenes, as well as finding good random recommendations, is through music forums, such as this one:

forums.SOHH.com

however, i'm pretty dissapointed with the results i'm getting from google. the above forum seems ok, but none of the ones i've found seem as good as the few i used to hang out on (before they changed for various reasons)

i figure it's probably a word-of-keyboard thing, so i'm asking you guys if you can recommend some good ones. i'm specifically looking for a good forum for each of the following genres/concepts:

1. rap/r&b
2. dance music (house/electro/minimal/d&b etc)
3. indie/alternative
4. world music
5. professional musicians talking about their jobs

ideally they would cover both popular and obscure/edgy ends of the genre spectrum (though one for mainstream and one for edgy would be ok) and be populated by interesting, friendly, knowledgable people with better stuff to do than start flame wars or spam me with ads.

i'm sure they're out there! any ideas?

ps. i did google "genrename forum" for each genre, and wasn't too impressed after digging around in the sites towards the top of the results - i basically spent an entire evening googling, clicking and bookmarking, but didn't come up with any forums that really wowed me. though if i'm being too hasty to dismiss something obvious, feel free to let me know i'm not giving it enough of a chance.

I've recently started devouring 60's and 70's era soul and R&B music. My favorites are Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Jackie Wilson, Otis Redding, etc. I feel I've mastered the well-knowns, and am now looking for lesser known artists in the vein of Howard Tate: fantastic, but virtually ignored by the masses.
Ada from Decatur

Please help me find a song filter: Looking for the song Ada from Decatur. My very cute and very sweet 8 month old daughter is named after her great-great-grandmother, Ada. While out and about in my North East DC neighborhood we ran into a very nice old lady who shared some smiles and coos with Ada and asked her name. When I told her, she asked if I'd ever heard the old tune Ada from Decatur?

My google-fu has failed me, except for one reference on a WFMU playlist for December 18, 1999 where Ada from Decatur by Jimmy Liggins off the Duplex label was played. Knowing Jimmy and Joe Liggins as swingin' R&B musicians of the late 40's, this song is a must have! Please help oh mighty hive mind!

Also, I am aware that Ada from Decatur is also a craps term. I went to college with many a degenerate gambler in Mississippi who also refer to jacks as "cowboys," queens as "ladies," and nines as "neener-ross." Thanks again!

I need to look like the white guy in Color Me Badd

I need to find some vintage wear for a halloween cosume. Color Me Badd oriented. I'm not sure if my local thrift stores are going to help too much. Basically, I need to find the following:
-z cavaricci type pants. Dark, loose at the thigh, tight/tapered at the ankle
-Dark sport coat. This needs to blare early 90s R&B. Like a jacket that ends at the waist with loose shoulders and tight wrists.
-Black shoes with tassles

Are there any sites that specialize in what I'm looking for? Like I said, my local thrift stores are _not_ going to have this kind of stuff (I've been looking fairly hard) and I would like to get it all in one place if possible.

Play that funky music, white boy!

Help me to diversify my mostly white pop music collection. It's dawned on me that 99 percent of my music collection consists of pop music sung by white people - Beatles, Aimee Mann, Crowded House. I love good melody and harmonies, and in the 80s my tastes tended to cross genres more often - Prince, Sade, Anita Baker. Now, though, those are still about the only African-American artists in my CD collection.

I want to branch out more, but there are a few limiting factors: I absolutely hate any kind of hip-hop (I can't find melody in spoken words) or reggae. Jazz is acceptable. I recently fell in love with Corrine Bailey Rae's album, and most Prince albums are still worth a listen. Don't like india.arie or Alicia Keys that much. What good African-American artists/releases will help me expand my musical boundaries?

Brick House for the Year 2006: I need suggestions for party music, please.

Funk Music for the year 2006: I need suggestions for party music. I'm making some CDs for a big birthday party. The general direction for the music is 70s-style funk and R&B. Okay, so I've got all the basics from that era: The Commodores, Parliament, Earth Wind & Fire, Ohio Players, Isaac Hayes, etc. That part's pretty standard. You know, a bunch of over-educated white thirty-somethings gettin' wild on the weekend.

What I'd like to do though is mix in some contemporary stuff that fits in with this genre. I'm trying to avoid having the music be just a time warp to 1976 but I want to stay in the groovy, funky, get-down vibe. So what current music/groups/artists should I be checking out that convey a similar sense?

My collection of Belle & Sebastian, Radiohead, Neko Case, and Broken Social Scene is not offering a lot of help.

Recommendations for great dance music.

My friends and I are throwing a large, time-travel themed dance party. I need recommendations for funk, soul, and R&B to play during the 50s, 60s, and 70s, as I'm deeply asea in this area. The basic concept is that we play 1-2 songs a year from 1955 to the present in an attempt to keep people DANCING. the 80s, 90s, and aughts are well covered, but 1955 to 1980 needs to be padded out well, and NOT with cute novelty songs.

I need some recommendations, mainly for great, upbeat, dancy soul, funk, motown, and R&B songs, but really for anything else that would keep people moving.

So far we're talking about Rock Around the Clock, ABC, Dance to the Music, Shake Senora, Give Up the Funk, Apache, and other various and sundry songs. We would love some more.
