What are some famous or notable counter-examples to Occam's razor (specifically, instances where a simple, obvious explanation is wrong and a complicated explanation is correct).

Dear face-shaving persons of MetaFilter, what is your preferred electric rotary razor? Mr. Sidhedevil has a tough beard and tender skin, and insists on using a rotary-head-style electric. The most recent AskMe on this was from 2010, so hoping there are some new good models out there. We're in the US, so it has to be available here.

I'm considering switching to a Safety Razor. What's the difference between Open Comb and Closed Bar? I've never seen these and scouring the internet has yielded no real usable explanation.

I've used the Mach 3 razor on my face for the longest time and I have been very happy with its performance. But Gillette's recent price increases are just not something I can absorb in my current economic situation. What are some good cheap alternatives that would be available in NYC-area stores?

As an 18-year old male I received a free razor from Gillette. Internet digging tells me Gillette
uses an outside source to determine men's birthdays, but no one actually knows. There are tons of blog comments, all of which can be summarized as either "Maybe it's Selective Service" or "Yeah, I got one too, X years ago!"
How do I get myself back on the list of 18-year olds for the next razor shipment?

Where to buy a straight razor in Montreal?
I'll admit that I haven't looked to hard on my own to find the answer for this but I was wondering if any Montreal-ers know of a good place to buy blades for a straight razor? They're for my wife who is a trained hair dresser and cuts a few peoples hair in our home (she vastly prefers razor with guard over scissors); her supply is getting dull. Thanks!

Deceptively unchatfilter =P I am looking for good discussions on Occam's Razor -- which I think is obscenely absurd. Looking for links to discussions, not necessarily petitioning comments (although welcome).

I'm a 23-year-old guy who's never used a real razor to shave -- I've only ever used electrics. (Why? Because I'm a pussy and can't bear to think about cutting myself.) I've recently started to think that the electric shave is less than ideal, and that proper shaving would be a good life skill to have. Of course, it'd be a little awkward to ask Dad to show me how like everybody else, since I'm not thirteen and he's in another state. How can I teach myself to use a razor without causing myself grievous injury? What kind of razor gives me the smallest chance of cutting myself? Am I ridiculous for even asking about this?

I've decided to finally take the plunge and switch to an electric razor (mainly due to laziness). There are so many options I don't really know where to begin. I don't have much facial hair so I don't need anything ultra powerful (I don't think?). Any recommendations?
