I need to select a kid-safe, dog-safe rat trap for a large rat who gives no fucks. [more inside]
I found a dead rat today, and the trash had literally been picked up hours before. So now I'm going to have a (double bagged, disgusting vermin) sitting in my trash can for a week while the temperatures get well into the "make dead things smell very very dead" levels. Is there anything I can do to stop my trash cans from smelling like death for weeks?
Will my sick friend get even more sick by living with a dead rat smell? [more inside]
Ian Thomson says in the introduction of The Third Man by Greene that Lime, with his alley rat amorality, is a familiar Greene character. What does this "alley rat amorality" mean? And he also writes that Greene's literary interest was not just in shabby crooks and other compromised characters;he wanted to dissect their morally ambivalent worlds. Will you explain what "compromised characters" are? Thank you!
Everyone likes a name-my-cute-animals question on a Sunday afternoon, right? I have a couple baby boy rats. They need names. Link to pics under the fold. [more inside]
I've got a female rat that needs to be spayed. My vet office gave me an estimate of $560. This seems way higher than I would expect (and I'm no stranger to vet bills, having taken care of many rats over the years -- but I've never done a spay). Is this a reasonable estimate, or is something wrong here? [more inside]
My friend in Jamaica Plain, MA, has a suffering rat in his driveway. He can't get in touch with anyone who will come take care of it. Animal control isn't answering the phone, and the Angell Memorial (nearby animal hospital) said they won't euthanize it for him. Does anyone know who he can call to come put this creature out of its misery? [more inside]
My friend found this in his kitchen today, but not sure if this is a baby mouse or a baby rat? Can anyone help?
We loved our little ratty but he died after a couple years and we don't want to go through that again in a couple more years. Any ideas for another pet that shares a lot of a rat's good features but lives longer? Things we like about rats: social, loving, cute, nice to pet and cuddle, playful, fine home alone for a couple days, stays in a cage. The pet doesn't have to stay in a cage, but it should be fine home alone all day in an apartment with no yard, and it shouldn't require too much cleanup. We're considering a cat but I'm mildly allergic, so I'd prefer something else. We plan to get a dog if we move somewhere with a yard eventually.
My pet rat has a giant, growing tumor and I'm unsure what to do about it. [more inside]
Help! Are the rodents too smart for us? I am losing my wits and feel like poison may be the only option, but I have two big ole dumb dogs that would most likely eat the poisoned rats outside. [more inside]
There's this iconic (or at least I think it's iconic, maybe it used to just be local to me?) image or logo that I am trying to find out the name of/origins of. But describing the image in Google is not coming up with the right results. [more inside]
What type of pump do I need to buy to remove air from an animal cage and deliver it at a controlled rate to an experimental setup? [more inside]
What's the bets method for getting rid of rats in a house that has a cat and small kids? Obviously snap traps are out of the question, as ius posion and probably glue, but are tunnel like electrical traps safe? How effective are the humane traps? (I do not, TBH, care that much about about being humane to rodents, but safety is a concern)

Our cat, who in the previous 6 years has not brought home any animals, has brought home 3 dead rats. Ew! What's up with that? Why now? Should we put a bell on him? Is he fighting off a rat infestation? Should we do anything about it? [more inside]

My cats, I think to thank me for giving them extra-special stinky cat food for Easter, brought me a present. It's a (live, but obviously wounded) mouse--maybe even a small rat. Now what do I do with it? [more inside]
My niece is coming to stay with us for several months and wants to bring her pet rat (think small, cute mouse (picture here) but friendlier). None of the airlines seem to allow rodents in the cabin. What's the best way to get her pet cross country (NC to CA)? Can she smuggle it on board in her carryon? [more inside]
My garage has been a rat motel for the past year. Now that the rats are gone how do I clean it and make it usable again? [more inside]
I'm considering getting a pair of rats. My AskMe and internet searches didn't have answers to my two questions regarding cats and vacations. [more inside]
What are our options for our pet rat's (maybe) tumor? Today we noticed a what we think is a tumor on our 3.5 year old female fancy rat. It's under her left armpit and about the size of a grape. From googling it seems as if tumors are a common occurrence in female rats, and this is probably a mammary tumor. We were wondering if any of you had any experience with this sort of thing or possible recommendations for small animal veterinarians in the Atlanta area. We are hoping not to euthanize her.
Several questions about rat infestations, including this one: If I use poison on the giant rats who are suddenly infesting my house, what are the chances of a poisoned rat deciding to die where my dogs can get it and then, if they do get it, will they die too? [more inside]

What to do about an extra "pet" rat. We have two domestic rats who get a bit of freedom (out of the cage for ~ 1hr per day so there is a risk of temporary escape). But now an extra rat has come into the house. Previously I've used poison to get rid of rat visitors (we live next to a creek so they're pretty common round about) but I'm reluctant to do so in case one of the pets escape. Any suggestions on how to proceed? The two pets are called "Dotty" and "Stripey" btw so we've christened the visitor "Hidey"

OK, so I'm sitting here with one of my buddies, talking about his research, and we realized that we know the word for "of or relating to mice" (murine), and the word for "of and related to cow" (bovine), but have no clue what the word for "of or related to rat" is. And after what we thought of as a pretty comprehensive web search (including this very good Google Answer), we're no closer to an answer. Anyone know what the word we're looking for is?
