Help me find a simple web app: Users are able to enter items, other users are able to rate those items, and the aggregated rating score is used to display the items as a ranked list. Like digg/pligg, but without the bells and whistles. The app should be open source and installable on any major server.

There are lots of pages that display portraits of professional and amateur athletes next to their statistics. Where can I find portraits and statistics/rankings of the people who compete in more intellectual/less physical competitions? I'd love to see what the best (and not so great) chess, scrabble, and crosswords players look like.

I once read a book about a couple of autograph hounds who ranked celebrities by their willingness to meet with fans and sign autographs. If this system were ported to the web and opened to the public, allowing anyone who's had contact with a celebrity to rank their experience, how could you validate that the encounter actually happened? A friend of mine has a little page where he sells books and stuff. He says it used to come up in Google, but no more. Yahoo finds it. It's a free site that came with his internet account, I think. Why did Google lose it? Is it just that Google is blocking these personal sites from this provider, cox.net?

Yahoo! Japan search rankings - can you pay to improve your ranking? At work, we have been asked by one of our representative offices in Japan to pay AUD1,126.00 to boost our search rankings, but I am very skeptical of the truth in this. I have spoken to a couple of Japanese people (including one of our staff members) who use Yahoo! Japan's search engine a lot and they confirm that it is possible to pay a fee to improve rankings of a site. Can anyone definitely confirm or deny this? If it does improve our ranking, it would be worth paying, but I can't help feeling it is a scam.
