There is a name for a cloud formation that is dropping rain in a vertical "funnel" similar to this
photo. The word might be Native American or Arabic, might start with a "Y" and I'm going insane trying to remember it.

Awesome but slightly rambunctious 8th grade class going on a school trip to the country. Rain is possible. Possibility of ultra-rare recreational computer access is likely to be a highly compelling reward for good behavior. The kids speak German. With all of these givens, what non-crack-like game should I install on the beater iBook G3 12" running 10.4 that I'm sending the teacher off with? [more inside]

Old Movie Filter: This is the question I joined MeFi to ask. I remember seeing a movie, on actual reels, when I was about seven at school. It has haunted me for the last twenty-two years. [more inside]

We are considering a one week trip to northern Spain including at least 2 days hiking and photographing in the Picos de Europa region. One of us is an expert hiker and the other is a beginner. However, the concern is about the weather. The plan is to go late April/early May however, we do not fancy hiking in the rain. Is this timeframe a bad idea?

Where is the closest place to Southern California that it's likely to be raining or have some good thunderstorms? I'm willing to drive several hours. This rain needs to happen around the middle/end of August. [more inside]

Where I grew up in a suburb of LA, a coppery/iron-like smell, reminiscent of pennies or blood, would always waft unpleasantly through the air after it rained. I could never locate its source. Has anyone else had this experience, and what causes this?

Pantheon Filter: I need an authoritative answer to this question. Is it true that if you get a ton of people inside the Pantheon in Greece, "air pressure" will keep rain from falling through the occulus? [more inside]

I am looking for a book about rain. For instance, cultural views of rain, the history of rain, basically any type of non-fiction book that deals with rain (other than from a purely scientific perspective)

Just before heavy rain/thunderstorms (especially so if lightning is involved) I get incredibly lethargic, fall in and out of sleep, get severe headaches, become panicky and restless and then after the whole spectacle is over, the horrible state I'm in vanishes. Why does this happen, and is there is a good way to treat/prevent it?

So I left my Z3's top down the other night, and the next morning the interior was soaked. I've toweled everything down and have been driving around with the heat on full blast, but some areas have still not dried and I don't want no mildewy car.
