New umbrellas come with a nylon sleeve / carrying case. I have never used one nor ever seen it used--I carry dry umbrellas in a pocket and wet ones by the handle or strap, and that seems to be what everyone else does as well. So what is the intended purpose of this sleeve? Have you ever used one and why?
Specifically, how rainy is Seattle going to be next week? Yes, I checked the weather, and yes, it looks like it will rain, but what is the rain like? Constant downpour? Light drizzle? Stormy wind and driving rain? And what do people who work in offices wear on rainy days? [more inside]
Please recommend music containing recordings of rain or moving water. Not vanilla nature noises, like Echoes of Nature (though I love those too), but music in which those kinds of recordings are incorporated as an intergral part of the piece. [more inside]

It's a very rainy evening as our plane goes into the landing phase over Barcelona; my window seat is just over the front edge of the wing, and we're below the clouds. As I look outside, alongside the plane, lit by the steady wing lights, there are perfectly horizontal, continuous strings - of slightly variable thickness - of rain. (At the wing tip, the flashing white beacon singles out perfectly horizontal, short stringlets of rain.) I know that rain doesn't fall sideways, so: what, exactly, am I seeing?

Where can my girlfriend and I sit down, relax, read, and talk for a long while during our visit to London? When weather is good, we love parks. When it's raining, we're at a loss. Are there any especially good libraries or other places for this kind of thing? Thanks!
Where can I bring about 20 friends who were planning to meet me tonight in central park for a birthday gathering? Storm clouds are brewing and I need a good backup, like a bar. Help me save the day!!

I'm in Barcelona with a friend. We've spent two pleasant days wandering around and seeing the sights, and we'd be happy to keep doing that, but tomorrow the weather is forecast to be wet. No problem, we'll go to some museums! But tomorrow is Monday, and most of the museums are shut... What can we do instead? [more inside]

My roommate bikes about 4 miles to work. His feet are size 13 and he uses platform (flat) pedals. He wears pretty chunky shoes. We live in Portland, OR. For HolidayGiftingTime I bought him some Sugoi Resistor booties, but within a month they have shredded and ripped to the point of uselessness. What are some other options for the large-footed, shreddy-pedaled biker? Are there any booties specifically for platform pedals? [more inside]

I am looking for a messenger bag or backpack that will be good for bus/bike commuting in the rain, i.e. will keep my lunch, reading material, and spare clothing dry whilst I am getting soaked. I would also prefer it to be durable and green.
Please recommend rain gear that will keep me dry and comfy walking around the city this winter. [more inside]
I ran across a travelogue a while back of two young women going on a long bicycle tour in the Eastern U.S. in the 1930s or 1940s. I think they started from Pennsylvania or another nearby state and originally intended to go west, but ended up going south. On the return trip, I think they took a boat up the Mississippi or another major river. Does this ring a bell? [more inside]
I'm throwing a small outdoor party tomorrow (25 people) and now there's rain in the forecast. It being graduation season, I don't want to spend all day calling party stores to find someone who can still rent me a tent. So, will a pop-up canopy like this protect people from the rain or is it a waste of money? [more inside]

I always wear/use leather in rain but they always tell me it's wrong for the material. This is a bit naive but I'm wondering what high quality good looking materials work for coats and bags in rain? I don't mean plastic or nylon looking stuff (although if they're technically the best I'd like to know) but more stylish.. let's say upto $1k/coat

Will rain do any damage to my pea coat? I'm going to Ireland next month and I expect I'll get caught in the rain a time or two. Will the rain do any harm to my pea coat that's labeled "80% wool, 15% polyester, 5% other"?
Where have you found good long streaming/mp3 sources for nature sounds, like rainfall or oceans or crickets? This question was asked and partially answered before (in 2005 and again in 2006) but here we are almost in 2010 so I figure there must be some new stuff out there. [more inside]

Challenge: find me that movie/tv movie for children. I remember this one from my childhood, but don't remember the title. Can you help? It rains every day except once a year. All of these children are in school and looking forward to the sun coming out. One little girl is locked in a closet by some mean bullies and misses the sun coming out. She misses the grass growing, the flowers blooming, and all the frolicking. The end is her running through the flowers/rain after she got out somehow. Anyone remember this? Probably late 70s or early 80s.

Tomorrow afternoon, I'm driving south on Hwy 1/Big Sur Coast Highway from Monterey to Lucia. I've never driven this road before, and I'll be alone. Thing is, it's supposed to rain hard tomorrow and apparently Big Sur Highway + lotsa rain = rock & mud slides. Unfortunately, dodging mudslides while driving along rainy cliffs aren't exactly skills I've developed living in pancake-flat Houston. Does it really get that treacherous? Should I postpone this trip for a less rainy season? If not, what are you supposed to do if you see a bunch of mud and rocks tumbling towards you and your rental car? [more inside]
