Should I trust the dealership or a shop with my new car?

The Ask: We love our new car, and want to be good parents to it, and we're able to pay dealer prices for maintenance and repair. BUT we want to get our money's worth, we want to last for a very long time, and we have other expenses (like our upcoming wedding) to pay for. So, should we place our trust in a dealership or a private garage? Which have you had better luck with, and why? The saga continues inside. [more inside]

Mechanic Panic - Are They Ripping Me Off??

I've taken my car to the mechanic what seems like an unreasonable number of times to fix an issue. Mostly, the car keeps overheating. First, they replaced the entire radiator. The next time it broke down, it was the water pump, which also necessitated a new timing belt. It's been overheating again, and came close to breaking down. I talked with a guy who knows cars, but is not a mechanic. He says if it's still having problems, it's likely the thermostat. Am I overreacting to not want this same shop to fix it? [more inside]

Need to Drain Water from Steam Heat Radiators

Our heading system got flooded and now there's tons of water in a couple steam heat radiators that are in the wall (not sticking out like so many). Every time it starts heating the water bangs up against the metal and makes huge, scary banging noises. With a normal radiator I would shim up a side so the water runs out, but these are embedded in the wall. I need help identifying which part of the radiator to unscrew to drain it. [more inside]

What can I safely cover my ugly wall furnace with?

My "Williams 30,000 BTU Natural Gas Direct-Vent Wall Furnace" is an eyesore and I'd love to build my own custom cover for it, but is that safe? Can I only use metal or can I use wood? I'd have a friend build it since I don't know much about it, but I'm wondering what I can do to hide or replace it. BTW I rent my apartment, so any changes I make should technically be reversible. Link for reference.

What is this strange contraption that was attached to a radiator?

I've been trying to figure out what this strange, accordion-like contraption is. It was attached to my friend's radiator in his ~1950s-era apartment in Philadelphia. It was only secured with one bolt at 90 degrees to the radiator, but it also originally had a sheet metal housing around it that could be removed. It seems to me like it might be some kind of clothes hanger/dryer, but I have no idea. Does anyone know?

My apartment's radiators are loud and letting out steam. Is that normal?

We've just moved into a new place and it's now gotten cold enough to turn on the heat. Two of the radiators are really loud with air escaping, and often have visible steam coming out of the valve on the side. I've never seen radiators do this. Is this normal? Is this safe?

radiator hose leaking after radiator replacement

I just replaced the radiator on my 2002 Ford Crown Victoria. I filled the coolant reservoir to the cold fill line. Now, if I let the car warm up for 10 minutes, coolant starts leaking out from under the upper radiator hose where it meets the radiator. The hose looks solid, and the hose clamp is on pretty tight so I assume the pressure is just getting really high. Also, if I open up the coolant reservoir cap, liquid coolant starts coming out, not steam. The coolant isn't even that hot. I can stop the radiator hose leak by reducing the amount of coolant in the reservoir, but the coolant level needs to be way way below the cold fill line for that. What is going on? What should I do?

Watch Out! That's A Rock! CRUNCH.

2006 Volvo S60's radiator has gigantic hole incurred when driving over big rock (thanks, teenage daughter!), most fluid slowly leaked out over the course of a week. Local mechanic said it's a Volvo-shop fix, but the dealer is 12 miles away and the coolant tank is almost empty. Is it safe to drive to the shop? I really don't want to be stuck on 95 with an unfixable radiator (and then having to call AAA).

Will a (Steam) Radiator Ruin My Rattan Couch?

I found a relative bargain on a super comfortable rattan couch. It's still real expensive, but, at half price, it's conceivably within my splurge budget. And I love the couch. The problem is it's going in a room with a steam-powered radiator, and will sit quite close to that radiator. And someone knowledgable tells me that the moist heat of a radiator will ruin (or at least hasten the demise of) the rattan. I'd hate to see that happen, particularly at this price! [more inside]
