Uhh.... so do I have a job or no?

Not-meaning-to-sound-ungrateful filter: I started a temp job in June covering for a woman who was out having a baby. She's supposed to be back to work in 2 weeks, but I've been unofficially told no one thinks she's going to. I don't particularly like this job but don't know what to do.... [more inside]

Ungrateful entitled prick with his head in the clouds? Or exploited lab rat with legitimate concerns? You make the call!

I'm having trouble dealing with dissatisfaction with my first post-college job, which makes me feel more than a little over-entitled. My frank impression is that the workplace is in shambles and that I'd been lied to in the interview process; more charitably, I'm wondering if perhaps this particular posting just isn't for me. Given the details, what's the best way for me to go about readjusting my mind for the position, readjusting the position for my mind (i.e. closer to what I was told it would be), or giving up the ghost and going for something different? What to do about burnout when you can't be replaced immediately?

I run a small charity that works with several hundred children with about 40 staff doing operations and two people working with me on fundraising and management. I'm unpaid and fulltime, and completely burnt out but it's not a job I can quit or handover immediately - I'm doing a transition to half-time, but it will take another six months, due to the specialised work. How do I stop myself from just setting fire to my desk one day? [more inside]

Would quitting my job help more than hurt

I'm thinking about quitting my job, not because I hate it (in fact I love what I'm doing). I would quit to take time to rest and recover. The questions: Are the consequences worth it, or should I treat this as an impulsive escape fantasy? Tried this yourself? Did you have the positive outcomes you had hoped for? Any suggestions or insight? [more inside]

No Smoke, No Sleep

Do you have any good methods for "hacking" nicotine-reduction insomnia? I'm quitting smoking, and I can successfully handle the withdrawal during the day using meditation, exercise and willpower. It's only 3 more weeks of my life - but what if I get hit by a bus? I want to enjoy myself but am trying to be sensible

Taking a break from work - help me make it count!

My wife has been feeling a lot of stress at her job for quite some time and is unsure of her overall career choice. She switched jobs about 1.5 years ago to try to reduce stress but her situation has not improved. She is concerned about finding a new job while employed (again) because the positions that she is qualified for would be similar. She is considering leaving her job and taking the time off to explore options and get herself into mental and physical shape. We've gone over our finances together and played out several scenarios that we think will work. Now we're seeking advice on things we may have missed or advice on how to make these months off really count as a time of mental reflection and physical health. [more inside]

Take the job offer or stay?

I need some unbiased feed back....I went on job interview on a whim. Turns out the hiring manager liked me a lot and I got a job offer the next day. The offer included a hefty pay raise with bonus potential. The job is similar in scope with some more responsibility and the potential for good growth. But the health insurance/dental/vision benefits are not great, but all other benefits are similar. The new position is salaried, my current is hourly. [more inside]

minty fresh

I am trying to quit smoking. I have never been a heavy smoker, but maybe most a half pack, at least 2 per day over a sporatic 10 years (year off here and there). During the day I'm cutting down by using only one or two those 2MG low dosage suckers from over-the-counter... but at night (so far, haven't been doing this long) I have had a few cigarettes. Am I killing myself? You are not my doctor, I know.
