When should I resign?

I'm quitting my job next month and I was planning on giving the standard two weeks notice. However, my husband has to have surgery (non-life threatening, but he'll be out of work for 1-2 weeks). If I actually gave two weeks, the first week of my notice would be the week that I'm taking time off for his surgery. So, should I wait until after I come back from his surgery and give just one week notice? [more inside]

Help with a huge career decision

I'm between a rock and a hard place in my career, and I could really use some advice and outside perspective. In short: my current job is incredibly stressful, with an environment bordering on abusive. I have an offer for a new job which I think would be much more pleasant. But I'd really be putting some people I truly like in a bad position if I leave my job now. Details below. [more inside]

Quitting when my employer has big plans for me

I'm ready to give my notice, with an end date of April 30. However, my department has some huge projects coming up that were taken on with the assumption I would be around to design them, and, well, I don't want to be. [more inside]

How Do I (Politely) Quit My Therapist?

I've been seeing the same therapist, mostly once a week, for a little over two years. I feel like we're going around in circles. It may be me (it probably is), but he's been very patient and flexible with me on a variety of issues (including financial--he's not covered by my insurance.) Your crisis is not my crisis, except it is

Me--planning to quit job. Work--planning grant funded projects for me.

[For folks that work in the non-profit sector] I feel at a loss for what to do. I work for a non-profit that I have been planning to leave for some time. I am taking the GRE this month, applying to schools and even applying for school-compatible part time jobs. At the same time, my non-profit is trying to pull itself out of a budget hole by applying for a multitude of grants. Most of the deliverables are things that I am supposed to deliver and the only other person left to deliver would be my immediate supervisor. I like my supervisor and don't know how she would even get all the work done if I left. My work would not be easily transferred to a new hire. I feel overcome with guilt as each new grant proposal goes out the door because I'm not planning on being around to do this work. I know it would be really dumb to say that before I have an offer in hand for school or a new job. What is the right thing to do? Should I let them build their plans around me when I'm not sure I'll be around? [more inside]

Want to quit but don't want to look like a jerk on my resume.

I was going to write a long explanation of why I want to quit, but really, none of it matters. I'm a PM in Advertising - I have worked at small agencies and probably never want a long term, real FT gig at a big shop. I would be okay contracting at a place like that. If I decide to quit this job, I will likely do so in favor of a contract, and will likely avoid a real FT gig for some time due to agency burn out (unless I get an offer from a known quantity, which is a possibility but not a certainty). All in all, I'd much rather be without anything to do and the option to do what I'd like instead, rather than where I am now, which is nothing to do and ready to lose my mind. [more inside]

Quitting-job-filter: Etiquette if Boss is on Vacation

I am currently employed and have been looking for a better job for several months. I don't want to tip my hand.

I am planning on leaving my job, and indeed my current career path, in the next 3-ish months, but for various practical reasons I want to stay for those next 3-ish months. There's a conference coming up that I would absolutely be going to if I were staying in this career. Do I sign up for the conference? If I do, the conference fee will be wasted when one of my coworkers could use the money for their own professional development (and money is tight in our department) and I'm afraid this would cause bad feelings and people would take it personally. Ungrateful entitled prick with his head in the clouds? Or exploited lab rat with legitimate concerns? You make the call!

I'm having trouble dealing with dissatisfaction with my first post-college job, which makes me feel more than a little over-entitled.
