In personal experience, many programs notionally or popularly perceived to be aimed or benefiting primarily minorities end up making me (white dude) better off as well, e.g. Section 8 housing assistance. I'm trying to identify data and research sources that either support or diminish this claim. [more inside]
There's this Facebook thing. A question will be asked like "Name a city without the letter E in the name. Bet you can't!" or some other equally easy question. 8032324089 people will then comment "Um, Atlanta! OMG This is so easy how stupid do u think i am?" People jump all over them to show how smart they are. What's the point of these things? [more inside]

I'm sure this is a stupid question, but I wondered. Why don't cell phones and other chargeable electronics charge multiple small batteries in parallel? The analogy is like this: * I have one cell phone with a large battery that takes 3 hours to charge. * I have three cell phones with small batteries that take 1 hour to charge. Why can't cell phones just have 3 smaller batteries and charge them all at the same time, and therefore make the charging faster?
Sometime in the last couple of years I read a great description of the feeling of dozing off in the back of your parents car on a journey at night. I cannot for the life of me remember where I read it. The part which really struck me concerned the description of the feeling being somewhat uncanny, possibly slightly evil. Does anyone know what it might have been? It might have been something by Stephen King.

When looking for a new place to live, there is a question I want to ask my potential future housemates, but I can't figure out how to phrase it. My best attempt so far is "How particular is your household about doing things a certain way?" or perhaps "How many high-maintenance things do you have in your house, and what kind of care do they need?" Basically I'm asking how nitpicky people are, but I want to ask in a neutral way. [more inside]

My husband and his ex wife put their only child up for adoption 24 years ago (when he was about a year old). My husband's ex wife reached out to me almost 6 years ago asking if my husband (her ex) wanted to have a relationship with the child they put up for adoption. My husband wanted that opportunity. He reached out to the son several times, received no or limited responses. [more inside]
So for like 5 years I've been trying to remember what the name of this cheesy movie was from the mid to late 90s. What I can remember: There's a man who's in some kind of torrid romance with a woman. Halfway through the movie they're in front of a fire about to make love. She takes his dress tie and blindfolds him with it, and they go at it. We find out partway though that it's really her friend instead...and he realizes when the woman bends down to whisper into his ear "It will be our turn soon..." He removes the tie, says something like "Cammy/Dani etc" and the woman takes the tie, gags him, and basically rides him to completion. The only other thing I can remember about the movie is the specific song playing during that scene...which is Bahu-Rang's Strange Imagination by Joseph Pusateri. Any ideas???!
In August of 2000, I was visiting Mountain View, CA on a work trip, and one evening, we went to a Mexican restaurant for dinner. They were playing mainly mariachi music, and a song came on, a cover of Billy Joel's "Piano Man", but in a mariachi style, with spanish lyrics. I asked someone what was playing and they said it was a muzak-like system, and that they didn't know song names and such... I've been searching off and on since then, but haven't found it. Does anyone know anything about this? It was a really enjoyable cover, and really funny, being that there was no piano in the song...

Dear AskMeFi: is has to be some way to get the effect I'm looking for on my walls but with a shimmer? I like this tree branch graphic for my walls, but I would like to have it shine like glass beaded wallpaper. As I understand it, glitter never sticks to anything you want it to but sticks to everything else. I'm just not sure how to get the effect on my walls that I envision. Ideally it would be removable because we live in an apartment. Thank you for your help!

I've been talking to a guy online for 4 months. He's cute and seems like a decent, fun guy w/ a full life and lots of friends. We've exchanged a lot of info/flirted through email, but nothing too deep. At first he took great interest in me - emailing me with open ended questions, always asking how I was doing and replying a day or two later. I went away for 2 weeks and he said he'd miss me, etc. Because of how silly I was with the guy I liked before him I was trying to manage my expectations ("nothing could come of it and it'd be okay!" I told myself) and play things cool by only reciprocating what he gave me, but recently we've hit a snag... [more inside]

Help me ID this story/author: I've been listening to a little more Warren Zevon than usual lately, and this has tickled a vague recollection of a novella or short story (possibly from an anthology) about a white-collar werewolf working as a repo man or debt collector, driving a big ol' (green?) We live in the state of Alabama. My son is 18 and a full time college student. He is starting a part time job to help with school. He will be making minimum wage and will work 20 or so hours per week. We are filling out his paperwork and came across the "Alabama Dept. of Revenue Employee's Withholding Exemption Certificate" http://www.ador.state.al.us/Withholding/FA4(01_07).pdf Would this apply to my son or do we leave it blank?

Apologies, I know there is a lot on this topic, but I have a specific question that doesn't seem to be answered. We are thinking of having kids. We both want them. What should we discuss before we jump in with both feet? Who will stay home, and for how long? What kinds of names are you considering? What forms of punishment / praise will be used? When can she get her ears pierced? etc. There seems to be so much to discuss... and I want to start having the conversation before I get hormonal. This will be our first. What conversations did you have before yours were born?
