I want to read more about the cultural history of Quebec's
Quiet Revolution, a short period in which suddenly the people of the province became more secularized and the pace of life revolved less and less around their traditional Catholic faith. What are some good papers and books about this?

CBC Radio had a program on an old Quebec library (I think - in Montreal) - that dates from the 1800's and is supposed to be absolutely stunning. Something that people would envision being right out of Harry Potter. Unfortunately - I could not make out the name of the Library - and lot's of googling has come up with nothing. Does anyone here know if the Library in question?

What
was this strange ritual?
I was visiting Sherbrooke, Quebec in the late summer of 1979. I remember one Saturday, a guy was being pulled in a wooden cart down the street, as he was being pelted with eggs and other, unremembered things. He was shivering, thoroughly miserable, and looked like he was about to cry. I asked a native, in my stiff college French, what the hell was going on. He replied that this was an old custom done to bachelors just before the marriage. Onlookers were laughing, cheering, taunting, and generally having a good old time. I was shocked by the seeming cruelty of the scene.

My parents are celebrating their 10th anniversary in Quebec City. They are staying in Sainte-Foy, on Hochelaga Blvd. I want to get them a gift certificate for a nice but not too fancy restaurant; nice enough so it's special, but not over-the-top, five-star nice. I want $200 to cover it. Thoughts? Thanks!
