I am interested in learning how to differentiate high quality jewelry from common pieces--especially on the resale market. When I go to an antique store or thrift shop and look at jewelry, it all looks the same to me. Sure, I can differentiate by color and number of stones, but that is about it. How could I develop the ability to tell the difference in quality of jewelry, apart from the price tag that a store manager or dealer has put on it? Are there resources that you have used, such as blogs or books, to help you learn to appreciate the truly great from the mediocre? Any general advice for someone that wants to be a jewelry connoisseur? Any input would be greatly appreciated.
I recently applied for a job in the pharmaceutical industry as a statistical programmer. I was told that if I successfully move to the next stage of the selection procedure, I will need to set a "quality control" test, in addition to a programming test. I would like to know "quality control" means in this context, so that I can try to prepare myself. [more inside]

I need a new bed frame, and I found one that's hitting a lot of my buzzwords: it's hand-made from locally-sourced hardwood by a small business. And at $280 (Canadian) for a queen, it's less expensive than comparable beds from IKEA. So I'm assuming it's made by someone in their garage. How can I tell if it's well made? [more inside]
I've been living in these jersey button-up shirts. However, the fabric is thin and starts pilling after just a few washes. Where can I buy a higher-quality version of these? [more inside]
This has been asked before, but the responses to that inquiry seem a little dated, so I will ask again: what are some good brands for wool pants for men? [more inside]

I want to buy a print online of a Klimt painting in the public domain (specifically, this one). Lots of places sell prints of this (and everything else under the sun), but it's impossible to tell whether there will be differences in the quality of the print from the jpeg. Are there any shops that make better prints than others, or things I should look for when choosing a print, or does it not matter?
Can anyone suggest a great ear-bud headset for an android phone that has a high quality mic for phone conversations?
Once upon a time I was something of a photographic purist, lugging around a couple of pounds, not to mention, several thousands of dollars worth, of camera body/lens wherever I went. Now, with three young kids in tow, however, the need for convenience has trumped image quality, so, I now shoot most everything with my Moto-X phone. That said, I really miss the image quality so was wondering if there's a high quality, compact camera out there that can bridge the gap between a $3K SLR & iPhone yet still be pocketable?
I'm looking for clothing stores within driving distance of Dayton, Ohio that are known for their quality. [more inside]
When calling landline to landline, I have no trouble hearing every word that's said. Meanwhile, my friend just called someone to give an ETA and ended up shouting NATO phonetic alphabet into a smart phone that can stream 1080p video. After he hung up, he admitted that he hated talking on telephones because one party or the other always needed something repeated. Why is mobile call quality so terrible? Why do people not demand this (in the economic sense)? [more inside]
I've got my personal style pretty well sorted, and am willing to throw money at the problem of hating shopping. Where can I get the most quality bang for my buck when it comes to sweaters, buttondown shirts in non-traditional colors, and pants? Women's sizing, though I do shop on both sides of the aisle. My favorite line of socks has been discontinued and I would like to see what my options are for a replacement. Basically, I like solid black boot socks with plenty of cushioning. [more inside]
I'm looking for archival quality bookmarks, which is to say I'm looking for bookmarks that won't transfer acid to my acid free notebook paper. I figure that I could use a cut piece of acid free paper, but I wanted to see what options were available. [more inside]
I think a MeFite once linked to an awesome website that sold all my favorite brands (Smashbox, NARS, MAC, Urban Decay) at a discount, and it was reputable. Does anyone know which one it is or any reputable website that you've used, sells at a discount and is reliable?
I spent $60 on a pair of these Bare Traps boots, which I loved for exactly five days until the heel completely fell off of the shoe. I am off to get my money back as we speak. What retailer makes boots like these that won't fall apart this winter? [more inside]
My well-worn Verizon iPhone 4 often doesn't ring for incoming calls when I'm inside my apartment. Is upgrading to a new phone likely to fix it, or do I need to change carriers? [more inside]
Yes, it's kitty food question #1,628. I'm wondering if any of the good quality cat foods mentioned in previous threads have gone south of late. (It's too bad that cats don't eat beans because I plate up a lot of them.) [more inside]

Does your development/software qa department have a knowledge base? What tools/software do you use for knowledge sharing and collaboration? I heard it's good to have a QA Wiki page to document information? Any interesting free software out there for software testers? like to generate test cases? Is your department efficient? Thanks
Can you help me find the form-fitting, top-supporting undershirt of my dreams? I'm looking for something I can buy 15-20 of because I hate shopping and just want to get it over with. I've been wearing "long and lean" tank tops, and they're completely amazing fresh off the rack, but they get loose and stretchy after only a few washes and wears. Specifics below the fold! [more inside]
Hi all! We found a color we like and, I'm assuming, we can get a paint color match (right? at least pretty close?) in any paint brand. So... what's the best satin, low-lustre or eggshell paint brand? [more inside]
Partner & I have decided to vote with our dollar by only purchasing quality long-lasting goods, or going without. We will pay more if the quality is clearly there. Rather than waste time driving from store to store, only to find junk, I'm looking for stores known for quality items. Difficulty Level: Sisyphean... [more inside]
I'll admit it, I buy a lot of clothes off the sale rack or at outlet stores. Too often, though, I bring home what I think is a great value only to discover, after wearing and/or washing said item, quality problems I didn't see in the store. Things like knits that are twisted and don't lie flat, shirt hems that are hopelessly contorted once they've been laundered, or buttonholes that quickly ravel beyond repair. I know these sorts of problems are inevitable given the state of clothing manufacture, but that doesn't mean I have to buy these "troubled" items. So, savvy shoppers of MeFi, what should I be looking for? What tells you to steer clear of a garment no matter how much you like it? Is there a secret code on the hang tag that everyone but me knows about? C'mon, please share your secrets.
I've been thinking about building this little Altoid tin headphone amp kit for listening with my Sennheiser 555s. Granted, the point of building the kit is, well, building the kit--but given the limitations of a (cheap) kit-built design and the fact that I listen exclusively to mp3s on my iPhone or Mac, will there be a perceptible improvement in sound from the cans? Is there more to the sound of my mp3s that I might not be hearing just driving the Sennheisers with the juice from the iPhone's or Mac's headphone jack that would merit stepping up the signal with the little amp?
I am looking for a laser printer for our studio / office. A second hand one seems sensible and I understand the page count is important, but it's hard to find decent information on the internet about which companies are reliable and which machine produce good copies and have cheaper spares and toner. A3 is important and so is a high quality print. I was looking at a Ricoh Aficio CL7000, but I don't really have any idea! Any help would be fantastic as would suggestions of where I should be buying this thing.
After watching this scene from Full Metal Jacket, my SO wanted to get a pair of similar quality clippers. He has shaved his head by himself for more than 10 years but often complains of clippers that clog, or have a slow motor or "miss spots". He was blown away by the clippers in that Full Metal Jacket scene. After searching online Wahl seems to make good ones. Can anyone recommend me some good high quality clippers? He shaves his head with no guard on the blade down to 1/8".
I am on the hunt for a review, overview, listing of, or any other compilation of sorts that you may find explaining all the different American quality indicator systems in health care, specifically nursing if you're that good. AHRQ, ANA, NDNQI, .... but a more inclusive list and description of all their individual quality outcome management recommendations. I've been searching for days and haven't really found exactly what I need or want. Thanks!
I am looking for current industry thinking around software quality management. Specifically, the differences and boundaries between testing and quality management and how quality management plays in to all phases of the SDLC, not just testing (ex: code reviews, requirement inspection). I'm specifically interested in content from established leaders around IT management, such as PMI, ieee, IBM, incose, etc. Thank you!
I'm trying to create a book of tweets. I've screencapped images of tweets as both jpegs and pngs, and uploaded them to four different "make a book" sites (Picaboo, Mixbook, Snapfish, and Shutterfly) and each time, the site warns me that the image is too low-quality to print well. The image preview does not look good. [more inside]

Can I buy an iPhone and use it only as a camera without having to sign up for a service plan? I don't really need nor want a smartphone, however, I'm now wondering, with Instagram, etc, if I should start shooting some stuff on a smartphone? The only downside is that I like having big, canvas prints up around the house am under the impression that the phone's image quality is still pretty crappy.

What is the item you own that is completely 'fit and forget'? What is the thing in your life which needs the least minuscule amount of attention, upgrades, tweaking, watering, oiling, sharpening, and so on? How can a small (3-5 employees) brick and mortar/e-commerce B2C retailer survive and thrive in an increasingly competitive market (outdoors/sports products) when it cannot compete on price? Any good examples of small companies doing just that? [more inside]
I've got home video in a number of formats that I'm trying to convert to play on my PS3. I have a Very Large NAS with integrated UPnP server (a version of Twonky), so I'm not looking for a new way to stream the data. I've got Handbrake 0.9.8 for OS X, which doesn't (appear to) have a preset for the PS3. I've dug around a little bit, but every set of settings I've found either results in data the PS3 won't read, or video that's more artifacted than I expected (common symptom - horizontal striping when things move). Anyone have a good set of parameters to transcode to something the PS3 can use?
