Need ideas for websites I could build. I am going to be in between jobs in the next few months. That gap could be a week or it could be a year depending on how long it takes to find my next gig. During that gap I would like to stay productive. I am a project manager, but I can write decent python/js/css/html. I need ideas for websites I could build that 1) I would have fun doing, 2) Would be something I could talk about in interviews, and 3) Could maybe produce a community, traffic, or a few dollars.

I love programming in Python. I'm smart and savvy, and I pick things up very quickly. I live in New York. I want a job, but I have no work experience as a programmer. How do I transition from grad school in the humanities to an awesome tech job? How should I market myself? How do I get past the hurdle of having a typical humanities PhD student resume?

Here's an example shipping setup that I'm moving towards.

How hard would it be for me to write a simple chat room program, that could be used at work for people in my dept to talk to each other? I realize I could probably just download something (like Google Talk, for example), but I'd like to learn to program and this seems like it would be a simple enough project to start with.

I'm teaching myself to program. I learned the basics with Ruby on Rails, and I'm now coding in Python and Javascript, but I want to try an Android app, and that requires that I use Java. Going from Ruby to Python to Javascript was relatively painless, but I feel like I'm starting all over looking at Java code. Does anyone have any tips for going from scripted languages to Java? Or any really great tutorials for getting started in Java? Or any great tutorials for beginning programmers for Android?

So I was fiddling with commands in the python interpreter via the Terminal. I ran this basically, and was messing with the help system.
fileHandle = open ( 'test.txt', 'w' ) ;
fileHandle.write (' asdasd^3 ');
fileHandle.close();
And all of a sudden this application opened. Python shell is it's name, it has no icon. WTF is going on?
