Disabling and enabling php.ini functions using SSH (putty)

I need help disabling php.ini functions using SSH (putty) on my dedicated server. I'm trying to run a script which imports over a million listings from an Excel file into my mySQL database, I get a bunch of errors and found out I need to disable the following functions using Putty (SSH module) in my php.ini file to successfully run the script.

phpinfo, pass thru & ini_set

I have learned that I need to use Putty to access the SSH module. I have successfully logged in as the administrator and have been able to locate the folder /usr/lib/ where the php.ini file is located. This is where I'm up to right now and don't know how to proceed.

Please tell me now how to edit the php.ini file to disable these functions mentioned earlier. If possible please tell me how to enable these functions too after I have run the import database script.

Thanks for all your help guys and gals, I really appreciate this.

I tried contacting support at my hosting company but they only offer limited support, nothing so technical (pffftt)...

God bless Metafilter :)

Help me build Hoth!

I'm crafting my first real substantial diorama (read: not made out of construction paper and a shoe box) and I need some construction assistance. Bonus! It's the ice planet of Hoth! I've started building models lately. My latest construction is this - a Star Wars AT-AT that I finished up last month. I include the blog link and associated pictures because they are relevant.

A week or so after finishing the model, I realized I was missing something. Mainly, I felt like I could really make it something special if I fleshed it out a little bit with a diorama scene - maybe turn it into something I could put on my desk at work or something like that.

I have no experience with this sort of thing, but I have a couple books that go over it a little, so I decided to give it a whirl.

THE DIORAMA!

1. I went out and bought some wood (including some toe moldings for the edges) and I put it all together into a suitable frame.

2. Then I bought some foam insulation. I cut it to shape and used it to start to construct the terrain - which includes some hills and such to give it a little character.

3. Then I bought some spackle - you know, the stuff in a tub that's purple, but turns white as it dries. I mixed this with some Elmer's glue to make a kind of paste, and I applied this in layers over the styrofoam to create a more realistic terrian.

4. While wet, I added some accessories - I used some straws for some industrial piping and conduit and some other stuff. Also, the AT-AT model came with some gun emplacements, so I added those.

5. I used some green modeling putty to fix up some of the edge work and so on.

Next, I would sandpaper it down to a fine finish and spray paint it with a primer and then give the whole thing a base coat and then paint it per usual.... except, I have a problem.

THE PROBLEM!

The problem is that I'm not sure how to merge the diorama and the AT-AT. The AT-AT is already painted, detailed and finished.
I don't want to just glue the AT-AT on as an afterthought once everything is all painted and finished with the diorama.

I mean, this is supposed to be Hoth! If an AT-AT is trudging across a field of snow and ice, one would think it would sink a little bit and kind of leave an impression in the terrain. I want the putty/terrain around the feet to kind of squish up around the feet of the AT-AT, as if you put your foot in mud. Does that make sense?

However, my every effort to that thus far has a) almost ruined my AT-AT and b) almost ruined my diorama, which now looks like this after some dramatic patching work.

In a perfect world I would have these foot "impressions" - then I would prime, paint, finish and just drop the AT-AT into place... but I'm not sure how to do that without getting putty all over the AT-AT and making a huge awful situation.

My latest idea is to like, trace an outline of the AT-AT foot imprint, then cut a piece that matches it out of wood or something and use it kind of like a stamp in wet putty.. but.. I"m not sure if that will work, or if I have the technical expertise.

I kind of want to give up. Help!

bob vila and the like, please advise!

A screw that holds the wood facing facing of my silverware drawer onto the glides broke in the wood. After a long protracted battle, it ended up having to be "chiseled" out, making a big mess, and making a big crater in the facing. Good news, it is on the inside so it isn't an eyesore. Bad news, I have no idea how to fix it. I need to be able to put a screw back in - in that same spot. The crater/hole is about 1/4" deep and about 1" in diameter, and basically is as deep as the screw was drilled. I can't afford to go much deeper to grab into new wood bc it will drill into the front exposed part of the facing. My question is - can I use wood putty to fill the crater? Will that hold a screw strongly? Everything I've looked into about wood filler doesn't really address holding a screw that is used often so I'm not sure. Most talk about using a toothpick or matchstick but that won't work here because the crater is shallow and wide, and there is no hole anymore, just the crater. Handymen and women, please advise! thanks in advance!

Where to get Blu Tack in bulk?

Where can I buy poster putty in bulk? (Poster putty is known as Blu Tack, White Tack, Museum Putty, Zorkai, Prestik, Tack n' Stick, Sticky Tack, etc...) Where can I get about a pound of the stuff? Everything I see online are 2 oz or so presentations, buying a box of those would be a waste of money and packaging.

I don't need brand name stuff. I know one can buy generic silly putty in bulk from some manufacturers, is this the case with poster tack?

Exporting my xsession is this close to working out.

I'm wondering if anyone knows how I might resolve an issue with exporting my X session to a Windows box over SSH. It . . . sort of works, but the vital parts of this particular GUI aren't visible, and I think I've tried every Windows X server known to man. I'm trying to get a new backup system, BakBone NetVault, production-ready. I like everything about it except for the fact that there isn't a locally-installable management client. In order to manage the server, you have to either use the CLI or invoke the GUI, so if you are remotely accessing the server via an ssh session and have ssh set to ForwardX11, you do an 'nvgui&' and your management window pops up and everything is lovely--at least when I'm accessing the server (which is running RHEL 5) from another Linux box (my workstation is Ubuntu, but it seems to work with most distributions I've tried).

However, if I try to do the same thing from a Windows box running an X server, there is no happiness. I've tried MKS X Server, Hummingbird Exceed, Xming, and Xming-mesa, and in every case the core application windows will come up successfully, but sub-windows where detail would normally appear remain totally unpopulated--I bring up the Media Management tools, for example, and the proper window appears, but there's no list of media. There are some screenshots on this page that might give a clearer idea of what the window should look like. Basically everything in the white areas in those screenshots is absent no matter what X server I'm running on my remote Windows machine.

It wouldn't be a big issue, but I know that some of the admins who will be maintaining this installation once it goes fully into production run Windows exclusively. In addition, I can't take full advantage of NetVault's support when they offer WebEx sessions for troubleshooting given WebEx/Ubuntu/Firefox/IEs4Linux problems . . . which is another question for another day, but means I will occasionally need to access the application from a Windows machine. I already run VMWare (and have coLinux downloaded and ready to go as another option) but would prefer a simpler solution such as Xming-PuTTY because I don't feel good about expecting the other admins to jump through that many hoops just to administer one little thing out of many.

I'm not really so hopeful as to think anyone here has tackled this exact problem with this particular application. But does anyone have experience with exporting X sessions who might know what would cause these or similar symptoms? Is there another work-around I haven't considered? I'm open to trying other ways of doing this.

Thanks for your help if you've managed to hang in there this long. :) If I need to provide more information just let me know.

Best OS for these requirements.

Best *nix distro for SSH, RDC, router and print server. Or i could use windows if that would satisfy the conditions. What is the best OS that will be good for using as a router, SSH machine, and print server? I recently purchased a server closet on wheels for my dorm room. I also got a new case for my computer to make it rack mountable. Now i am going to be buying a mediocre 1U rack server in order to satisfy some of my other needs. I would like to know what the hive-mind would recommend for such a use. It will be on nearly 24-7, needs to have SSH, be able to launch a RDC connection to other computer once in SSH, router, and would work for a password protected print server.

Wow now that i write it out that sounds like alot of qualifications. I am kind of a nix n00b so any step by step tutorials for this would be great.

Leather shoe repair with putty? I've been wearing the same sort of boots for about 10 years, I'm on my 3rd pair. They are great but about two years into each pair they develop a tear in the stress point on the instep side of the toe, right where it bends as I walk.

Last time I brought them to the shoe repair place in the 53rd and Fifth Avenue subway stop in NYC, and they repaired the rip with some sort of putty. It worked perfectly - invisible, flexible, strong.

NOW, however, I live in Texas and the shoe repair place that came most highly recommended tried to sew up the rip and that worked as poorly as I thought it would. Any idea what this magical putty is, and if it is the sort of thing I can do myself?

Sending them to NYC for fixing has occured to me but the hassle + cost of repair + cost of shipping = ask.mefi.

How can I access my webmail via a ssh tunnel?

How can I access my webmail via a ssh tunnel? My corporate firewall started blocking ports 2095, 2096, and 2082, but I can ssh to the box that is hosting my domain. I used to access my webmail via https://domain.ext:2096/ but no longer can. My host runs Linux and my desktop machine is Windows. How do I properly set up an ssh tunnel so I can access my webmail via the web and not using lynx from within an ssh session?

I tried using putty and L2095 <> localhost:2095 and same for 2096, but to no avail. Perhaps I was doing something wrong.

Thanks for the help.</>

FTP help: I have some files on an external server (Apache) that I am unable to delete because "there is no such file or directory". Yet, mysteriously, they remain. [mi] I've Googled without finding a solution. I think it may have something to do with the file names -- they were created by an old mac user and have spaces and extra periods in them. I can't do anything to them -- move them, rename them, what have you. I've tried with multiple FTP clients and from multiple locations.
