Starting tomorrow, I will be fostering this little guy, a 12-week old dalmatian mix. He's deaf, and I have zero experience working with deaf dogs. As per the rescue group's requirements, I'll be taking him to puppy socialization classes (yay!) but I think the training is going to be up to me. Can anyone offer any advice or suggest resources that might be helpful? Also, I'd love to hear some name suggestions.
We are adopting a shih tzu puppy, yaaay! We would love some help picking a name for him! [more inside]
I adopted a dog with a small tattoo that I'm assuming serves as some kind of identifier. I'd like to find out what information is available about her as I know almost nothing about her except for what the rescuing vet told me. Help me find out what the tattoo means and if I can find out her birthdate and breeder/state/area of origin. [more inside]
A veterinarian has diagnosed our 9 month old sheltie puppy with a soft tissue injury in her front leg. In addition to a regiment of anti-inflammatory medication, the vet advises against running, jumping, strenuous play, and outdoor walks for the next 2 weeks. How do we keep our pup entertained during this duration? [more inside]
How old should a dog be before being taken on long hikes? [more inside]
My three month old puppy is peeing every five minutes and clearly has a UTI. Will this self resolve? How long should I wait before taking her to the vet?
We have struggled for three weeks to name our rescue dog. He will be ours Saturday so we have to decide soon. [more inside]
So in a couple of weeks this guy will be coming home, he's a wire-haired pointing griffon and we are having a hard time finding a good name. Contenders so far are Fred and Bruno. So in time honored mefi tradition help me find the perfect name!
My beloved puppy (male, uncut, 9 months) is growling and being aggressive. We received a call from our apartment manager that there had been a complaint. I am terrified that this will happen again and they will try to evict us, or report him as a dangerous dog and try to kill him. Please help either with strategies or anxiety management or sanity check. I love him and am desperate. [more inside]
A couple nights ago, we brought home a spunky nine-week-old Pointer/Lab mix from The North Shore Animal League. We did this after the sudden passing of our beloved Westie, who died at 13 from rapidly progressing cancer. I don't know. Maybe we did this too quickly. Maybe we weren't ready for the CONSTANT chewing, peeing, biting and jumping. But the fact is he's here. The animal lover in me is telling me that his behavior isn't his fault, and bringing him back to the shelter is an absolute LAST resort, bordering on impossible, for my family and I. But we don't know how much more we can take. Help? WOT inside, sorry. [more inside]
I bought a lovely puppy last week, and she is now 9 weeks old. She is a cavalier spaniel/collie cross. I work from home with fields out back, so the hope is that I can give her the attention and exercise this high energy breed combo will most definitely need. [more inside]
Difficulty level: boy German shepherd puppy is not supposed to be neutered yet, owner with PTSD, trainer is suddenly using some maybe dubious tactics, and we have been dealing with aggressive off leash dogs. Beloved dog is now barking and lunging against some other dogs and people, especially in territorial environments. [more inside]
Asking for my next door neighbor who just got an 11 week old Malinois puppy who is biting more than an average puppy. There is a reason people call them Malingators. He bites and does not release. Malinois owners what has worked for you to break this problem? [more inside]
My puppy just caused hundreds of dollars in damages. Help? [more inside]
We've had our eight-week-old Labrador for a few days and he's developed a bad habit: he won't pee while we're outside in the garden (sometimes for over an hour) but the moment he comes in he goes to one part of the kitchen and pees there. How can we make him realise that he's got it the wrong way around? [more inside]
Today we brought home our new puppy. (pictures here, here and here) She's a 5 month old, 10lb (5kg) maltipoo - black with a grey muzzle, and she needs a name. Suggestions? [more inside]
Our near 12-week old puppy doesn't seem to have crate anxiety, but really doesn't do well with the confinement/isolation part of the question. She's on her way to housetrained, so should we even try? [more inside]
Some family members have a dog that they can no longer care for. Their lives have gone through a lot of upheaval in the last year. At some point I guess getting a puppy seemed like a good idea? Well it wasn't and now they have an approximately 9 month old dog that is not trained, he barks a lot, and is basically chewing everything and anything including the walls. He is medium sized maybe 40 lbs. A poodle pomeranian shih zsu mix. But kind of looks like an all white lab. I don't know much about dogs. [more inside]
Our 10 month old pup, Kesugi, is still struggling with loose leash walking. We were doing reasonably well with the combination of a Gentle Leader and very frequent high-value treats, but then real winter hit. Now what do we do? [more inside]
What are your tips for getting a young dog to chill out and react reasonably to a situation he finds VERY EXCITING? Our 7 month old puppy is dragging our arms out of our sockets every time we drop him off at doggie daycare, and it's making me nuts. [more inside]
Vet says wait until after 16 weeks to take Otto outside, manufacturer says a single injection provides immunity, and my previous research says they're both wrong. [more inside]
We just adopted this 8 month old female Pekingese from a shelter in the midwest. We started out working through Buffy-verse names, and got excited about Fred, which we long-formed first to Winifred, then decided that sounded like a middle name and tried to think of a very generic first name, like Lady. We ended up with Lady Winifred and we call her Fred, but the grandparents object, and we're open to choosing something different, since we chose it before meeting her. [more inside]
We recently adopted an incredibly sweet dog from a local shelter-- Frances is a three year old dachshund/chihuahua mix. She's super mellow and calm when we're with her-- never barks or chews, perfectly housetrained, doesn't react to other dogs or people when on walks... basically perfect and incredibly lovable... EXCEPT... when left alone, she becomes a nightmare destructo-dog. [more inside]
We are curious if anyone has had luck with alternatives to surgery for Cherry Eye in a puppy (he's a maltese, shi tzu mix)? or if no, what we should expect to spend on surgery for the little guy? [more inside]

~1 year old Labradoodle name of Twist. Good boy. Crate trained up to this point, house trained so long as we lock him in his crate overnight. Which is the issue. I'd like to start weaning him off of the crate. He seems ready, he has no trouble holding it all night in the crate and it's not like he's rushing for the door in the morning; he'll happily romp around the house while we're getting breakfast etc together. But when I've tried leaving the crate door open overnight he, well, chooses not to wait until morning. Looking for strategies to let him know that that's not okay. [more inside]

A week ago we adopted a four-month old puppy. She is currently teething and clearly in an adjustment period in her new environment, but she is terribly antsy and fretful. Is this just normal teething / settling in to new home behavior and is there is anything I can do to help her? [more inside]
My useless dog Truman seems to really enjoy watching a certain type of scene on TV. We've been stuck inside all winter and I know he'd rather be running around in big grassy fields. Please help me find some youtube videos for him to enjoy! [more inside]

Husband has android phone and I have an iphone. We have a new puppy. We need an APP that will let us sync between us a log of when our pup goes potty (and other puppy things if available) since he leaves for work at 3 and crates our pup, and I come home at 5 and take over for our pup. I cant find it, but there has got to be an app that will easily let us track all things puppy related and share it between the two of us. Maybe not even an app made for dogs? Thanks!
My husband and I are adding another dog to our family. Yay! He's a rescued coonhound/great dane mix, about 18 months old. We couldn't be more excited to bring this awkward, gangly guy into our home. But what should we feed him? [more inside]
Husband & I are getting a puppy soon. Since we spend most of our time in our study, we were going to purchase this pen to keep in our study along with his crate. Unfortunately, our study is carpeted. So we need something we can cover a section of the carpet with, help us find it! [more inside]
My partner and I are getting a puppy mid January. Questions about house breaking and crate training. [more inside]
We have been planning on bringing a Bull Terrier puppy into our lives for a year. Well tomorrow is his arrival date and I'm stressed. We live in a townhouse with a fenced yard. No kids. Our work schedules will allow somebody to be home at least every 5 hours. I have only owned puppies when I had my parents to take on most of the responsibility. I have the crate, leash, collar, bowls, two types of food and some toys. Now what? What advice can you give to a new puppy owner? I felt like I did all the research, but now I feel lost. How have you raised your puppy so he is a joy and not a terror? What three things do you wish you had known when you brought your puppy home?
Our 18-week-old male puppy was just neutered, and I am puzzled by the vet's advice to my wife. [more inside]
My sister is taking home a new puppy from a breeder who feeds her dogs raw meat purchased from a local butcher. Sis does not want to continue this practice but is concerned the transition to commercial dog food might be hard on the pup. Does anyone have advice for weaning the dog from raw to conventional dog food without causing significant distress?
Why is my dog, who is generally well-behaved, displaying this dominance-related behavior with the new roommate dog and how can I correct this behavior? [more inside]
Adopted a puppy from the shelter this morning, and the breed was listed as a beagle mix, but they said they honestly didn't know for sure. Any ideas of what this sweet girl could be? http://i.imgur.com/f2npDDB.jpg http://i.imgur.com/zmWqsOn.jpg
Week 4 with the new pup. I *think* I'm giving him a great life but sometimes he gives me a look that says 'i want to go back to the shelter, i'm bored and this sucks'. Is this normal as a new pet owner? How can I relax and not stress about being the best. owner. ever? What's a normal 'life with a dog' schedule like? [more inside]
My 3 month old shelter puppy seriously dislikes everything to do with his leash. This makes getting him out of the house....frustrating, and carrying him out the door will be ridiculous when he is 70 pounds. What am I doing wrong/not trying? [more inside]
