Feral dog step 2?

We adopted a five or six month old dog that was born into a feral colony and rescued at 3 months old. He lived in a shelter office for several months and seems past the first stages of acclimating to people, but he's still terrified of us. [more inside]

Essential stuff to have on hand for puppy/dog parents, beyond the basics

First time dog owner, everything is going great so far. Still I feel unsettled as I've never had a pet in my life before that I must be missing something. What do you all have on hand to treat your dogs in case of emergency or first aid needs? What other essentials beyond the basics do you like to have on hand for your dog? Any other tips and tricks you have for first-time puppy parent and dog owner are appreciated too!

Help me find (the right) puppies in NYC

We would like to get a puppy. Special snowflake details mean we need to find a good breed not just overall but for our circumstances, and for the love of god, someone who sells them. I have been scouring the internet for some time and can find nothing useful because of the noise. [more inside]

Should this cat-owning/trying-to-conceive couple get a dog? If yes, how?

I want to know if I am crazy or not, because the last thing my life needs right now is More Bad Stuff. I am going through a very tough time lately (due to infertility and a dying parent). I also own two (neurotic) cats. I think I need a dog because an outpouring of goodness and unconditional happiness is sorely needed. But I'm trying to get knocked up, both my husband & I work full time, and I've never owned a dog before. Snowflake details inside, plus bonus question: if we get this dog, should it be a puppy or adult? From a breeder or a shelter? [more inside]

Which shelter dog: quiet four year old or eager puppy?

We have narrowed down our choices to two dogs from a good shelter and would like dog advice. We are a big family with a toddler living in a flat next to a park, with one cat. We have had dogs always, but our last four all passed away and it's been a year without a dog in the house. One of our dogs was an abused rescue and bit children and was miserable a lot, so we really don't want to deal with another rehab dog. We did and will do obedience training and walks and plenty of time with the dog as there's always someone at home. The shelter is okay with either choice for us. [more inside]

Crates vs. baby gates.

After doing tons of breed research and visiting shelters and rescues, I have finally found the write dog for me. I purchased a miniature dachshund from a reputable breeder in my hometown. She is only three weeks old right now, so I have five weeks to prepare for her arrival in my home. I do have a few questions that I hope Mefites can help me with. [more inside]

Chihuahua Puppy Guides?

In the wake of a recent hoarding incident in Pennsylvania a local shelter has a large number of chihuahuas who will soon be needing permanent homes. I have previous experience dogsitting a family member's chihuahua for long periods of time so I know how to take care of adults, but some puppies are also available for adoption and I think that might be a rewarding experience. Everyone in the household has experience with dogs, but we have not raised a puppy. I was wondering if you could link me to the best guides for what to expect and how to raise a puppy, and specifically for the unique challenges of a chihuahua puppy. [more inside]

Should I buy a puppy with mange?

I am in the market to buy a French bulldog. However, the one that I wanted to buy was around another dog with sarcoptic mange. While the dog has shown no signs of mange, I am still leery of buying this dog as I have a cat and three children at home. The seller said she will get the mange okayed by a vet before they are sold, but I am still not sure. Has anyone dealt with this before? Any thoughts on whether I should still buy the dog?

Help. First-time dogparent needs housebreaking advice

PeeingOnTheCarpetFilter: Our new puppy (shelter mutt, roughly 14 weeks old and of at least average intelligence) is thoroughly enjoying our spring weather. She often goes to the door and whines to go out just so she can roll around in the grass and chase bugs. When we give up on her bathrooming outside we'll bring her back inside, where she promptly pees or takes a dump. We're not talking about whirlwind visits to the great outdoors; we're talking a half-hour or so.

We try to be consistent about the location of the potty area, using verbal commands (I feel like a moron saying, "Go potty!" in public, but there you have it.) People always tell us that housebreaking is frustrating and requires patience, but how can we get the girl to potty first and play second?

Puppy fever - is there a cure?

Hive mind, I have a dilemma. I love dogs and have since I was tiny. I long to own a dog the way some women long to have a baby (ick). I haven't had a dog companion since I was a kid, but I now have just about the best lifestyle I think I'm going to have: we own a home, will have a fenced-in yard (as soon as I can get the contractors to finish the fence; soon, I hope), and have plenty of love to lavish on a pup. But I want to provide the very best possible home, so I'm having some trouble with this decision. [more inside]

Do you have experience using a crate for a puppy? What did you feel the pros/cons were?

Do you have experience using a crate for a puppy? What did you feel the pros/cons were? Anything in particular we should know if we get one?

Possibly pertinent details: We are hoping to get a puppy next week. We're getting it from a pound/adoption agency (Humane Society or similar), and it will probably be a male, medium-sized mutt of some sort. This will be the only dog in the household (at least for a while). We both work away from the house, but one of us generally spends a few hours at home in the middle of the day. We've had dogs before but have never used a crate.
