I'm looking for piano-based rock bands that rock really, really hard. I've seen this question, but I'm specifically looking for bands - not songs - that are led by a badass, hard-rocking pianist, like the Led Zeppelin of piano rock.

I love Ben Folds, Fiona Apple, Brad Mehldau...and suggestions in this genre are certainly welcome as well, but I'd love to find bands leaning more towards punk, heavy metal, hip-hop, or any hard-rocking, unconventional bands that are piano driven.

Bring me audio ecstasy, hive mind.

What do you use to see what bands are playing in your area? Im tired of finding out a kickass band just played and I could have gone but didnt know about it. There should be a website with a massive database where you put in your postcode or town and it tells you what bands are playing within a specified radius. Shouldnt there? Is there? Any band that wanted to get seen would register their show to this website. Myspace kinda comes close but you have to go to each band's myspace account to see if theyre touring. Unless Im doing it wrong. The bay area has "The List" which is really close to what Im talking about but I want more! How do you find out who's playing around you?

Need more live punk rock, please.

Punk Leather Jacket Rehabilitation

Back in the day, I had a black leather motorcycle jacket painted up in the usual punk style: Big back patch, studs, spikes, chains, the works. I'm older now, and I'd like to keep the jacket while getting rid of the youthful excess that covers it. How do I rehabilitate my old leather jacket? The spikes, chains, and studs aren't the problem, as they come out/off pretty easily. I can deal with the scars their extraction will leave.

The bigger issue is the paint. The back patch is spray enamel and acrylic, and there are enamel bits over the rest of the jacket. The two options I see are stripping off the entire outer covering and starting over or simply painting over the whole thing. I see some potential problems with either option: Acrylic paint doesn't strip off without a major fight, but it's lumpy enough to show through any over-coat I might apply.

I'm sure there has to be a solution, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to see it. I'd like this jacket to slide, semi-gracefully, into middle age with me, scars and all.

Long question short: Have you ever rehabilitated a leather jacket, and if so, how? Any input cheerfully accepted.

My band is going on a national rock tour: what should I know? Unexpectedly, a pretty big-time act wants this indie/psych group I play with to open for them on about 40 dates this fall. The dates are almost all booked, with a little break in the middle.

I have read this thread, and this thread, so I've got a pretty good idea about what to bring in the van, but mainly I'd like to know what you wish you'd known before your own band headed out on tour, or what you, as someone tangentially involved in the music scene in your town, wished that touring bands knew about.

Also: It's been 10 years since I went on the road what kinda stuff should I expect to have changed or be vital to know about now? What resources (besides BYOFL, which as far as I can tell is useless now) most came in handy when you were playing shows around?

FYI I am also the manager/publicist/booking agent and everything else. We have a self-released album and some t-shirts as a starter kit. We're buying a van. We walk the streets at night, we go where eagles dare.

Rock 101 Filter (literally): I'm giving a lecture on popular music from 1984 - 2000. (!) I'm teaching by style (in 1.5 hours). I'm having a tough time with alternative, punk, and indie rock. Whaddya think? This is an overview lecture to (mostly) educators about popular music from roughly 1984 - 2000. The genres I will discuss (and are not up for debate) are the following:

*hip-hop
*punk
*dance pop
*alternative
*grunge
*riot grrrl
*metal
*pop
*electronica
*indie

I understand that you would have chosen X or Y over Z, but that's not the issue. I have time to play one musical example (or video) from each style. I will briefly discuss other artists from different parts of each decade. For example, for the hip-hop section, I will play "King of Rock" by Run-D.M.C., but I will also mention albums by NWA, TuPac, Will Smith, Dr. Dre and Jay-Z.

Now for the questions:
What example do you think I should play for the punk, alternative, and indie sections? And what artists do you think I should mention for these sections? These are the styles that are dearest to my heart and I'm having a tough time deciding. For example, I think that it's very important to discuss DIY, so I'd like to play Fugazi, but at the same time, I don't want to alienate my audience (primarily K-12 educators).

I know that this will open up all kinds of cans of worms about genre, style, etc., but I'm really looking for your opinions about what to play and why. Remember, this may be the only opportunity for these individuals to hear Sonic Youth or the Pixies, but I also want them to be able to relate, if only slightly, to some aspect of what I'm addressing (so would it be better to play REM for the alternative section?).

MusicFixFilter: In need of very specific punk and anti-punk songs from today or yesteryear. In particular need of "overthrow the system!" and "Cut your damn hair, hippie!" themes. Oh so much more inside. Ideally, I'm looking for punk or otherwise high-energy songs that implore people to "fight the power", overthrow systems, and such. I'd like to get past anything used in a car commercial (not out of snobbishness, but c'mon, do we really need to hear them again?) and songs a casual fan of the genre may not be familiar with."Suspect Device" by the Stuff Little Fingers would be a good example.

I *also* need songs that counter the first. Yelling down the uppity kids, swearing everything is just fine, and um ..the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. "Hip To Be A Square" is, of course, the ideal example.

(Iggy and the Stooges filter) Ever heard the alternate, vinyl version of "Raw Power" with the different mix of "Search and Destroy"? I have a UK vinyl copy of Raw Power. There's a radically different mix of Search and Destroy. It's not the original, well-known Bowie mix, nor any of the Rough Power versions, nor the Iggy remix from the '90s. The vinyl is probably from the '70s or '80s. This mix of Search and Destroy has lots of reverb, a smashing sound on top of the snare, and louder bass. The main guitar is a bit quieter, and the overdubbed guitars sound different.

Any info? I'd really like somebody to tell me I'm sitting on a goldmine. And, if you're a Stooges fan, you gotta search this out. It's awesome!

Any info is appreciated, even if you just tell me you also own it and tell me when and where you got it.

Philharmonic Filter: Novice goes to see a great night of orchestra music in Oslo. Bolero was the finale, now I feel captivated and ready to explore. Which direction should I take and how can encourage my auditory palette to grow? Ideally, any recommendations towards best approach for learning more on orchestra, history and composition are appreciated. This includes links to live performances or even a primer on the subject.

Plus - which city has the best orchestra? I travel extensively and to understand more on the individual qualities each group would be fantastic.

Any good indie or punk rock songs about babies, young children as tributes or goofs? I was looking to put a mixed CD together as a gift for some friends with young children, and the theme was alt-ish/indie/punk songs about kids... either as genuine tributes, or quirky throw-aways. I thought this would be relatively easy, but all I'm coming up with is Sleater-Kinney's "Little Babies", The Presidents' "Drool on You", Talking Heads' "Stay up Late", and that's about it. Any suggestions or resources?

After 3 years of coming to work in black jeans, boots and studded jackets I've been told I now need to wear collared shirts and slacks, somethings I've omitted from my wardrobe. What are some good recommendations in the "arty yet tasteful, rebellious yet conforming" fashion range? As loath as I am to say it, I guess I'm asking where I can find 'trendy but tidy punk clothes', I managed to get away with having a mohawk at work and once came to Xmas lunch in a gorilla costume, however it seems the new CS manager lacks that same sense of humor, and my hours have changed so that I'm now around more often during the daylight hours.

I'm familiar with labels like Illicit but even find their stuff to be getting progressively more tame. I'm not opposed to ties and the like, but probably not into stuff which has too many bondage elements.

Top marks for recommendations which sell online, since I reside in NZ :-)

Bonus question: Are suspenders/braces acceptable now days, or would I just get weird looks?

My 15 yo daughter’s style is becoming increasingly goth/punk - black clothes, metal chains and belts, skulls and daggers, thick black eyeliner, and she recently colored her hair blue. I’ve been cool about it so far though I don’t like the whole darkness/hardness of it all. She’s starting high school this year. She’s an honor student and a thespian. None of her friends dress like this. Should I be worried, or is this just a stage?

Help me discover some great new punk music that isn't for 16 years olds. I've loved punk music since I was old enough to pay my own money for music. The thing is, the older I get (26 now) I've grown weary of the 3 chord, my girlfriend dumped me, Drive Thru Records, type punk music. I also prefer recent bands/releases, so please don't recommend me obscure bands from the 80's.

Basically, I'd like to find some new bands that have intelligent lyrics, with the more musical skill the better.

Just to give you an example, I like The Lawrence Arms, Alkaline Trio, (really any of the bands from the Slapstick family tree), Sparta, No Use for a Name, etc.

What to do and where to stay in Gainesville, Florida? I'm traveling over to Gainesville, FL from the UK for The Fest over the last weekend of October. I'm arriving there a few days early so I was seeing firstly if there is anything I have to do while I'm there and secondly if anyone could recommend me somewhere dirt cheap, like a hostel where I can get a private room or a reasonable hotel. Tell me some indie/punk shows/venues I MUST see in England/Amsterdam/France/Spain (but mainly England) this fall (mid-August through October). I am most interested in small to midsize shows (bands that haven't broke through in the U.S. would be great) and venues that I might not necessarily find unless I am looking for them specifically on Pollstar or something similar. I know this is a very open ended question, but so is my trip. Thanks. Oh, and, As great fun as they may (or may not) be I am too old in body (if not mind and spirit) for the giant festival scenes.
