LCSWs, MFTs, Psychologists in Private Practice - how do you do it?

I'm an ASW in San Francisco, planning to have my LCSW by next year. I have many years of mental health experience and my ultimate goal is having my own psychotherapy practice. My mentors who are either LCSW's or MFT's are pretty negative about the state of private practice. Are there any clinicians in the Bay Area or elsewhere with success stories? Any words of advice on where to start? This is unfortunately not something they teach us in grad school. Thanks in advance!

When do you know a marriage therapist isn't right for you?

What are reliable questions that a person in marriage therapy can ask to determine that they are probably not with the right marriage therapist and should try someone else? Put another way, how can a person in marriage therapy know that the match with the therapist is a bad fit, as opposed to the problem being with the patient himself/herself? [more inside]

How to ease into Private Practice therapy (psychological)

Asking for a friend who is an MFT. He is considering moving into private practice, however, he isn't ready to make the leap from a steady and reliable job to a job where income is very dependent on the size of your professional network--and he doesn't really have a professional network at all right now. Any tips on how to ease into private practice with a low initial commitment and pressure--just a part time thing with only one or a few clients?

CIA mind control

I was reading about psychic driving which is a CIA and psychotherapy technique to change human behavior. What I wonder is what kind of messages did they play to them? The same ones over and over? Different ones mixed together? what kind of things did they say? Seeing as how it was done by Dr. D. Ewen Cameron at a legitimate University under the guise of legitimate psychiatric research , I would imagine he would have released peer reviewed medical journals detailing his techniques, their effectiveness ect including what messages he played to them. What I am particularity interested in is what kind of things were said on the tape they played

TherapyFilter: For a friend--I am looking for a lovely therapist in the Durham, North Carolina area (and reasonably nearby regions as well). The therapist would preferably be more interpersonal or psychodynamically/psychoanalytically oriented versus cognitive-behavioral or purely supportive, be queer-friendly, and also have some experience treating anxiety disorders. Feel free to MeMail or e-mail me if you do not want to post publicly. Thanks, MetaFilter!

subconscious run amok?

Do you know the name for this psychotherapy technique: the symptoms come from some element in your routine which seems harmless but something in your subconscious freaks out about it. So you randomly omit items from your routine and if you are lucky you pick the right one for the first or second trial and your symptoms go poof. Also if there was an original inventor of the technique I would be interested in knowing that. [more inside]

Psychotherapy? Psicoterapia? Psychothérapie? психотерапия?

With regards to psychotherapy, a common opinion I've noticed on MetaFilter is that Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy is perceived as being the most efficient way to go, in addition to being one of the very few therapies likely to be reimbursed by health insurance. However, this may be coming from a largely American perspective. As such, I'm curious: What are some major features of psychotherapy in countries other than the United States? [more inside]

Choosing a Therapist

I'm curious how one selects a psychotherapist. Do you go by instinct alone, after a couple of visits? How many times do you have to tell your life story to a complete stranger before something clicks? At $150 a pop, these can get to be expensive auditions. How do you wall off the question of whether he/she is "the right person" from the issues you're there for in the first place? Any experiences out there?

And p.s. to the proprietor: this is the kind of issue that could really benefit from an anonymity option.
