Telling a joke until it is no longer funny.

I'm looking for stories about telling jokes until they are no longer funny. How do people who write comedy tell if the jokes they are writing are still funny after repeating them so many times? I'm interested in hearing more about the short half-life of the joke, and the ways a joke can function after it has lost it's ha-ha-ha. [more inside]

Book suggestions?

I'm looking for some good, meaty non-fiction to read over Christmas break while I'm home from grad school. Something with difficult ideas, yet readable and contemporary, and taking a fairly "big picture" view of a particular field. Any suggestions? Examples below. [more inside]

What is anxiety? How do you know if you have anxiety? Have you personally overcome it?

What is anxiety? How do you know when you're anxious? I’d like to read descriptions of what it feels like to be chronically anxious or hear how you know when you yourself are experiencing higher levels. I’d also like to know how you take care of yourself when it comes up. Have you dealt with it and overcome it? Books or your own descriptions are very welcome. [more inside]

Financial/Career Advice for my Girlfriend

My girlfriend graduated this past summer and has about $9,000 of college-related (not a student loan) debt. She's treading water and having a very hard time post-grad, and still hasn't found a job yet. Works full time at a coffee chain but it just isn't enough. Need some advice... [more inside]

Giving it the old college try

Can a high-school senior overcome middling grades and hope to get into college and become a nurse or psychologist, or is it too late? We've known a girl, whom I'll call Lisa, since she and our son were in first grade. We lost touch for a while, but we recently reconnected. She is the youngest of four and lives with her mother. None of her siblings nor her mother graduated from high school. Until this year, Lisa was thinking of joining the military after high school, but now she is interested in becoming a nurse or psychologist. My wife and I want to help her get into college. How can we best do that? We are meeting with her school counselor soon. We live in the Denver area. [more inside]

What do you think are the most interesting / surprising / perspective-changing findings in social/cognitive psychology? I'm preparing a talk for a German hacker conference (27c3), mainly about cogsci & socpsych. Bonus points if it's something that has some element of demonstrating bias / illusion / manipulability, or if it can have a quick actual demonstration, since I try to make my talks as audience-interactive as possible. Therapist and psychologist recommendation Swansea

Can someone recommend a good therapist or psychologist in Swansea, Wales, preferably with a background in Asperger's Syndrome? It's important they should communicate by email or text (not just by phone), and it would be nice if they could cope with simultaneous untangling of anxiety/depression, sensory issues, bulimia, seemingly-insurmountable practical problems, a history of PTSD and neglect, and probably a few other things it would be great if they could help me uncover. It would be really helpful if they were also female and gay-friendly. Thank-you. (And by 'thank-you' I mean 'please, please help'.)

My mind likes to dwell on the negative

Help me get over my obsessive feelings of bitterness regarding setbecks and disagreements. Any health benefits through writing about Obesity?

I've being researching about well-being and achieving this through self-disclosure (Pennebaker style) I've been narrowing my scope down to focus on how Pennebaker's style of writing has helped obese patients overcome psychological issues associated with obesity similar to other works on alcoholics and victims of traumatic experiences. I'm not a Psychologist so a lot of the research out there is unknown to me, so does anyone know of any papers or authors that address this? I've looked around but it might help if i have a lead or somewhere to start.

When I was in college, probably in 1995 or 96, I was shown two short videos as part of an experiment that a graduate student in linguistics was conducting and then asked to describe the events in each. I was later told that the first video was from a well-known psychology experiment and was shown to subjects as a control. The experiment was about my reaction to the second video. Ever since then I've been wondering about that first video. [more inside]

How does social pressure affect sticktoitiveness?

I want to learn as much as possible about the psychology of purposely forming new habits (like exercising each day) or sticking to something which requires daily work (like learning a language). I am especially interested in the role that social pressure of peers can play in a person's success (Alcoholics Anonymous, study partners, even the recent findings that a person's weight is related to the weight of those close to them may be examples). Books, articles, jumping off points -- academic or otherwise -- would be very much appreciated!

Help I'm being attacked - except I'm not.

Whenever a situation gets slightly confrontational/argumentative/critical (not necessarily dangerous), I experience a flight or fight response: my hands and legs shake, my heart races and my thinking slows down (along with all the other classic fight or flight reactions). It doesn't feel like an appropriate reaction to what's actually happening (hey, someone was rude to me in a meeting. I should stop shaking). I'd like to calmly deal with these situations, and try to tell myself that the person isn't actually hurting me, but my physical reaction is so strong and immediate. Any suggestions on how to not activate this reaction or at least reduce it?
