A person actively avoids doing what he knows will make him happy. He just
doesn't want to do it. Psychologically, what's going on here? And more
importantly, perhaps, why
should he do what he doesn't want to do? What arguments, appealing to
either his reason or his emotions, might he consider?

I wanted to give someone a link to a paper comparing the efficacy of CBT versus other methods for treating depression, but I can't find it in my bookmarks. Could someone follow up with links/a link comparing the efficacies of treatments for depression?

What do you think are the most interesting / surprising / perspective-changing findings in social/cognitive psychology? I'm preparing a talk for a German hacker conference (27c3), mainly
about cogsci & socpsych.
Bonus points if it's something that has some element of

quick actual demonstration, since I try to make my talks as
audience-interactive as possible.

I never finished college, instead I've been a passionate self-learner for a long time now. I'm interested mostly in cognitive in behavioral sciences. I've read a number of academic and college textbooks on the subject. And now, I really don't know what to do with all this knowledge.
