Psychic Psychosis

About a year ago on the urging of a friend who was into this sort of thing, I talked to a psychic. I was at a crossroads in my life and I was trying to make some big choices. The psychic ended up telling me a number of things which ended up happening exactly as she said. And then another thing that didn't happen. Help me with my sadness about it not happening. I told her nothing but my name and she told me I was dating a douche bag and that I would end things (he was - I did), she told me about another relationship and that I would like his personality but not end up being with him (true - and she picked out the months when it would happen). She told me I would get a new job and told me what it would be (correctly) and then mentioned the state I would move to (correct again and across the country). This was all before I had even applied for the jobs or knew the jobs existed. She described my closest friends accurately and without my prompting.

I have a pretty open mind to these sorts of things, and I'm not interested in getting into a debate about whether she was really a psychic. She said what she said, it's certainly possible that some of it was a self fulfilling prophecy - whatever. But the problem is she also told me I would meet someone who I would have an instant attraction to and end up marrying in August of this year. You might notice that it's September, almost October. No one. No really, no one.

So I'm having trouble with this. I need to get over this and stop being attached to the idea that this is going to occur because I've gotten rather depressed about it not happening. At the time when she said this, it was enormously reassuring to hear that I'd end up in a relationship because I've had craptastic luck in the romance department and have been rather hard on myself because of it. I would say I've been struggling to be happy as a single person and unsuccessfully looking for a relationship for about five or six years now. It was really wonderful to think that I could find a great guy to have a relationship with.

I seem to have lost that hope.

I've read a lot of the ask mefi's on how to successfully be single and I feel like I do pretty well at being myself, finding people to be with, enjoying my life and living rather than pining away. I've joined dating websites and talk to people and go out and have a good life. I chose a job that was really exciting and which provides me with a nice life - but it's also in the middle of nowhere and that can be isolating. Still I've made some friends (lots of married folks) and I do get out and try things. I'm sure that has something to do with this - I've moved across the country and am in a new place with less people that I know, more time on my hands and more consciousness of how many married people I am surrounded by. It's hard.

I guess the thing is, I just can't seem to shake a sense of sadness about this psychic's prophecy not coming true. I don't know how to get past that. I know intellectually that it's not an all or nothing thing - that she could have been off by a few months and that the future still holds possibility and there are more people to meet and you never know when you'll find someone and you've just moved into your new town. Blah blah blah. It sort of seems like static after looking forward to August and having the let down of not finding someone awesome to be with.

Any suggestions on how to move on? It's an odd thing to feel let down by - but I do sort of feel like my hopes were dashed. How can I regain hope and get past this? I do want to find a partnership that would make me happy. And I'm sure being depressed about what a psychic said a year ago isn't helping me attract anyone.

Thanks mefites!
please help me identify this scifi short story...

please help identify this short story...I believe I would have read this in the 80's. There was a team of psychic investigators, and they are called to look into strange events (unexplained accidents?) on a section of highway. In the end it turns out that cumulative spiritual energy of roadkill animals is somehow striking back/rising up, and there is an exorcism of some sort. Then they hear about the bus full of dangerous inmates which has crashed...(implying that the aftereffects will be horrific) I believe I read this in an anthology. The characters seemed well developed, and it had the feel of one of a series of stories. I seem to remember some backstory on how each member joined the team. I might be conflating that last part with the novels about psychic spies by Herbert Burkholz (which were very good, but no supernatural elements outside of the mind-reading). Help?

Has anyone taken a psychic reading here?

Has anyone taking a psychic reading? I am thinking of taking a reading from Char Margolis?

I do know of James Randi foundation, and I am aware that there are lots of scams. I am skeptical, but I'd like to check for myself before deciding one way or the other.

It would be great to hear from someone who has actually taken the reading (either with Char or someone else). How was the experience like? Is it worth spending the time and money (Char charges 600$).

Does anyone remember a BBC kids' TV series from the 70s-80s featuring psychic teenagers? I last saw it in the mid-80s. I'm pretty sure it used to air on Nickelodeon. It had freaky deaky Dr. Who type graphics at the beginning, and one particular episode was about evil paintings taking over people's minds.

I think there were maybe three teenagers, one of them a girl?

Discussion Filter: You may be PSYCHIC. Please help me define this term!

I have experiences that (I assume) mostly seem to be me picking up on people's body language and then intuiting things others might miss....but sometimes I get accurate pictures in my head from folks when they speak to me (places, etc.) and there have been times when I've had very accurate premonitions. These premonitions have been verified/documented, so it isn't like I'm making it up after the fact. Does this happen to you, too? What is it?? Throwaway email is youmaybepsychic@gmail.com. Go ahead and write me. I don't have the guts to post with my metafilter name, either!

Most of the time I think I am just sensitive to the social clues others miss, nothing extraordinary there. But the truth is that this extra "knowing" has effected me since childhood and shaped much of my life. I am now 40 years old. If it is more than skill, how do I cope?

And yes. I've had some weird social interactions as a result of this thing over the years. I'm hoping to continue this discussion openly, should it prove popular. Or privately via my throwaway email. Private is good. Point is, I'd love feedback from a wide variety of people, and the MetaFilter community seems especially thoughtful, intelligent, and grounded.

Thanks in advance for your comments!

Spurred by this fpp, I'm curious about Gary Spivey. His website lists various predictions he's made, and says they're verifiable, but doesn't link to sources for any except the Justin Timberlake one. I'd like to see/hear verifications for any of those, but particularly the 9/11 prediction one. Please note that this question is a straight-up request for verification of any of these predictions; it is not the question "Do you think Gary Spivey is psychic?"

Recommend a psychic in the Los Angeles area who has performed accurate readings? I need answers/amusement/awareness/hope... A hobby/crutch of mine when I lived elsewhere used to be going to psychics - there are good ones, there are bad ones. References from others usually leads to good ones who aren't just cold reading but somehow can actually see things (or at least make me, the skeptic, believe they are seeing things).

Any recommendations in Los Angeles?

Chicago Psychics?

Great (or even good) psychics in Chicago? Saturday is my 45th birthday, and as part of my plans I want to visit a psychic, fortuneteller, etc. that day.

Anyone know a good one -- with contact info? A friend told me about someone named Dorothy J. or Dorothy Jay, but can no longer find her number. If you know it, step to the front of the line, please.

And yeah, I know this is probably bunk and a scam and a total waste of money and yada, yada, yada. It's still not going to change my birthday plans.

Thanks, AskMe.

Good books about 'unexplained' phenomena?

What are some well-written, readily-available books about, for want of a better term, ‘the unexplained:’ apparently psychic phenomena, apparitions, telepathy, and the like? I have a pen-pal who is at college studying electrical engineering in north-eastern Africa. He has a great curiosity about philosophy, literature, and the arts, but books of all kinds are hard to come by where he is, so I have been sending him some of my old volumes.

He's expressed a particular interest in these ‘unexplained’ phenomena, but I am a skeptic, and haven't anything that fits the bill. What are some good general works on these subjects? Ideally, I suppose, I'd prefer books that would allow him to draw his own conclusions, and are neither blindly credulous nor dogmatically skeptical.

Is there objective proof of psychic phenomenon or what??

Is there any scientific evidence to support the existence of psychic phenomenon? I've been reading Daniel Pinchbecks 2012 and early on in the book he makes the claim that it's a fairly done deal as regards the reality of various psychic phenomenon, linking it in the same sort of way to quantum physics that the movie What The Bleep did. What's the deal? Is there really a large group of scientists who 1) say that these things happen and 2) are not complete nut jobs? Are we really on the verge of accepting that we don't live in a stricly mechanical world? That consciousness might actually be able to affect its surroundings? That consciousness might actually be at the center of everything?

Daniel Pinchbeck is a lucid, enaging writer (his Breaking Open The Head is one of my favorites) so when he says that the scientific proof is out there yet doesn't cite any it gives me some problems as a reader trying to take his work seriously. In fact, a lot of my favorite authors make similiar claims. What's the deal?

Birthday Fun: Looking for psychics in downtown Chicago/River North. So, do you have any recommendations? I'm planning my own birthday party (long story) and after dinner, I want to see a psychic and get a Tarot reading or a palm reading. There are dozens of psychics in the area, but I want to go to one that has a storefront in downtown Chicago or River North (Streeterville/Michigan Avenue are also acceptable) and that will accept my group of 8 all at once. I understand that it's impossible to do 8 readings at once, but I do want us all in the room while we're having our own individual readings done (e.g., I want everyone to hear what my reading is).

To be explicit in my criteria: a serious psychic, that takes groups, that does Tarot and palm readings, that is open on a Saturday night after 7:00 p.m., and that is located in the touristy bits of Chicago.

What should I do with a plea for help when it's based on a psychic consultation?

Help me with a family member who wants me to help her because of the word of a psychic! My brother left his wife and teenage children for another woman a few months ago. My sister in law has lately been to see a psychic consultant, and told her about the situation, including the name of the 'other woman'. The psychic told her that a woman by that name had come into her shop lately wanting help to draw my brother away from his wife and family, that she is a very evil person, that she was conducting black magic on him, etc. The psychic wants me to help my SIL cast a spell to break the influence; my SIL and my mother have both begged me to do it. Personally, I think the psychic is taking advantage of my SIL's distress.

I don't believe my brother's left his family because of black magic; I believe he's being stupid, but I don't think it's anything more mystical than common or garden adultery. I don't want to get involved. Some years back I was involved in solitary paganism and did some spellcasting, etc; my SIL knows that. I don't do that stuff any more; possibly nobody in my family knows that, because they all live a long way from me, and we're not very close. And even if I did still do that stuff, I still wouldn't want to be getting involved on the word of a psychic. I am pretty sure that my SIL and mother will not understand why I would refuse.

I would like to find a way of telling my SIL that I think she is being manipulated and that I do not feel comfortable getting involved. Preferably a way that will not increase her very real distress over the situation - she is clutching at straws and very unhappy. I know that refusal will pretty much put me in the bad books of my own mother as well as SIL, and they will be bewildered and hurt and angry. I don't have a strong religious conviction to fall back on, and even though the simplest thing would be to just go along with it, I don't feel comfortable with it. But is it worth standing up and increasing the distress, or better to pretend to play along despite my own discomfort?

Deja Vu

DejaVuFilter: I dream events that will occur to me in the future, on a rather erratic basis. I recognize these dreams when they repeat in the real-world, and sometimes recall the rest of the dream, making it possible to change the outcome of the experience. Does anyone else experience this? Know anything about it? Opinions? [MI] It's more like a snippet of a dream; a short sequence of events- dialogue, movement, scenery, emotions, senses- everything you can think of that would make up your perception and awareness. They are no longer than twenty seconds, and it's occasionally possible for me to recall the rest of the snippet, and use that to make a change in what I say or do as opposed to what played out in the dream. They have been happening all of my life- the first time was when I was four, I dreamed about walking through a field on an exercise path. Months later, I walked that dream at my father's athletic club in New Jersey. I still remember the trees, walking beside my brother, a bee buzzing, and the clarity of the blue sky.

Now, the frequency of this 'deja vu' is rather erratic- sometimes I'll have a few in a week,
then nothing for a month. They also span different amounts of time- I recollect one experience that I dreamed almost 2 years prior to the repeat experience, and yet had other experiences during this interlude.

I know I'm not the only one who has this, but I haven't talked with anyone who had these experiences in the same way- most people say that they feel they've 'been' somewhere, not that they are re-experiencing a moment in life, like a movie. Thoughts?
