Classic psychiatric texts?

I'd like to get my step-mother a gift for her 50th birthday - we're not particularly close, but I'd like to make a nice gesture. She's a psychiatrist, and a lot of her identity is bound up in that, so I'm thinking some kind of classic psychiatric text in a nice edition would be appreciated, but I don't know where to start. Can spend up to $200 or so. Any suggestions?

Migrating to Medicine from Computer Science

I did my Bachelors (in Computer Science) in India and Masters in Computer Science in USA. I now intend to migrate to medical field and aspire to do a PhD or an MD in psychiatry or any other branch of study in medicine. Can anyone tell me if there are any premier institutes in India or abroad that might have my credentials as an eligibility criterion for an admission? Thanks in advance! [more inside]

Why is there no such thing as urgent care for depression?

My partner is trying to seek medication for increasingly bad depression and can't get in to see anyone anywhere until late next month. Advice, suggestions? Location Madison, WI. We are more than willing to travel, but we'd want it to be for a psychiatrist/psychiatric NP, not another talk therapist. [more inside]

Definitive answer about ADHD meds needed

Here's an assertion one hears frequently in discussions of ADHD: "It seems people with ADHD get a calming, clear headed effect from stimulants, as opposed to the speedy, euphoric type of high 'normal' people get from them." My question is: where can I find *good* information about the truth or falseness of this type of statement? [more inside]

Psychiatrist in Atlanta?

I'm trying to help a friend find a psychiatrist in the Atlanta area (or northern suburbs) who can evaluate and treat his depression. He's hoping to find someone extremely smart, and he'd probably appreciate someone with impressive training credentials. Meds-only or meds-plus-therapy are both options. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Why is there so much controversy surrounding the DSM-V?

Please point me to some resources (interviews, news articles, opinion pieces, etc...) so I can better understand why the DSM-V has generated so much controversy, and what the major points of contention are. The more gristly it is for my milling, the better.

Some questions about adderall.

I recently started on adderall for ADD-type issues, and I've got some questions about the effects it's having. I intend to bring them up with my psychiatrist when I see him next, but that won't be for a few weeks and I think it would still be valuable to get some outside perspective, especially from people with first-hand experience. A lot of this has to do with sexuality. Questions and details within. A bit long-winded. [more inside]

How often do I HAVE to see my shrink?

The doctor who prescribes my Ritalin and Lamictal is telling me that the state licensing board in Maryland requires that he see me once every three months. I've never heard of this before. I believe that it may be recommended that a doctor see a patient on some defined basis, especially with new prescriptions, but I've been seeing him for years, been taking these for years and never had any issues. The only justification I can imagine is the overall crackdown on Schedule II prescriptions. I really don't want to spend the time and money to sit there and tell him everything is fine 4 times per year. Is he really required to do this? Is it medically justifiable and necessary?

How long to get ADHD diagnosis?

I've never had insurance before and am getting it soon. I have seen counselors in the past and have been told that I might have some sort of ADHD and maybe depression. I do have trouble in school, especially in math and science classes. In order for the disability services at my school to provide me services, I need a licensed psychologist or psychiatrist to evaluate me. How long after I sign up for one of these will I start seeing him or her? How many sessions are there usually before they can evaluate me properly? I need to do this in a span of 4 months for spring semesters classes so I can receive accommodations. Is this asking too much? Will it be too quick? [more inside]

In a state of utter confusion

My adult daughter was diagnosed very quickly by a psychiatrist with bi polar disorder. It isn't that I disagree, but unfortunately I'm concerned that she is showing signs of antisocial personality disorder....She cycles about every three months having at least 2-3 mini rage episodes a month. She told me today that she's scared because of thoughts she is having. She lives with me, as do her two amazing kids. Her ability to care for them on her own is out of the question in my opinion based on the fact that she has a pill addiction and has had 2 seizures over dosing. When things are bad she goes to the doctor, has good intentions, gets back on a "good" track when things are bad she is not capable of being a loving mother. [more inside]

Advice on at least getting an IEP for a sweet kid with OCD

A young junior high aged relative (a cousin’s daughter) has severe OCD with compulsions related to checking and handwriting plus obsessions related to harm/avoiding harm. Immature coping skills/tendencies in many of the adults around her mean that her home life is chaotic at best. She does not have an IEP or adequate mental health services. At the strong recommendation of a regular pediatrician, my cousin did go to the school and attempt to request help/changes. This was a huge step for my cousin given that she also has severe OCD, is very avoidant, and has a lot of shame. She was largely dismissed by a teacher and a principal who said that there was “nothing wrong” that wasn’t due to “home life” and that the child just “needs to work faster”. [more inside]

CIA mind control

I was reading about psychic driving which is a CIA and psychotherapy technique to change human behavior. What I wonder is what kind of messages did they play to them? The same ones over and over? Different ones mixed together? what kind of things did they say? Seeing as how it was done by Dr. D. Ewen Cameron at a legitimate University under the guise of legitimate psychiatric research , I would imagine he would have released peer reviewed medical journals detailing his techniques, their effectiveness ect including what messages he played to them. What I am particularity interested in is what kind of things were said on the tape they played

When the DSM-5 comes out, are you automatically given a new diagnosis?

The DSM-5 is coming. I have a diagnosis that is being revamped in the new edition, the name is totally different. Does my doctor do a new evaluation and converts it over, or just converts it himself by clicking some things in a computer, or does the wording/paperwork/dx code stay the same? Also, does everything have to be reevaluated since there are minor changes to many things? [more inside]

Happiness as a choice for the clinically depressed?

I've been constantly told that key to being okay again is to "choose one's happiness" - both by strangers on the internet and the very closest people in my life. I've been diagnosed with mild-to-severe depression and anxiety for three years now (there is a bit more to that, though). Since most of the before-mentioned friends (etc) wanted me to stop taking antidepressants, I am without them for now. So, since everything I found by sending my queries to Google was meant for "normal people" who are "feeling a bit depressed", I would be grateful to know how these approaches apply to those with actual mental health issues, if they do at all. Drugs make my bipolar mom a shell of herself. She says it's worth it.

Extremely medicated mom: My mom has struggled with intense bipolar disorder for most of her life. She attempted suicide twice and has been hospitalized 3 times. For the past 3 years or so, medication has stabilized her moods, but at what appears to me to be a heavy cost. Seeing a psychiatrist for anxiety. How does that work?

Seeing a psychiatrist for anxiety and depression - How does that work? I went to a doctor about my anxiety issues and she gave me a referral to a psychiatrist to get some anti-anxiety meds as she did not feel comfortable prescribing them. (She didn't give me a name, I have to call my insurance to get a list or something I guess. Also, she gave me a no refill xanax prescription after I begged.) I am somewhat bewildered by this as I didn't expect to have to go to a psychiatrist so I have some questions. [more inside]

A recommendation for a psychotherapist in DC?

I'm looking for a psychotherapist in Washington, D.C. and would appreciate a recommendation. I've been seeing a psychiatrist for a year, but don't feel that I'm making much progress with her. Though she's been helpful in certain ways, she jumps too quickly to (often-erroneous) conclusions, she puts too much weight on things I said months ago in passing and she doesn't inspire confidence in me that she sees a bigger picture or is connecting the dots in a way that I can't alone.
