aspergers, adhd, anxiety, or appropriation?

Is there any benefit to pursuing a diagnosis for neurodevelopmental disorders (specifically autism spectrum disorder or adhd) as an adult? Are there reasons not to seek a diagnosis in that realm? Are online screening resources useful for them, or is the use of those resources problematic? Is it better to stick with anxiety and depressive disorders, both as a means for seeking treatment as well as a means of self-understanding? More to the point: Am I trying to figure out what's wrong with me, or am I just trying to earn a Golden Sympathy Star? [more inside]

Recommend a therapist in Nashville?

Can anyone recommend a wise/insightful therapist in Nashville? This would be for chronic depression, not debilitating but definitely restricting quality of life. The situation from which it arises cannot be changed, and the best comment I got from making the rounds several years ago was "but do they respect you"? (no; then "well, how can I help?"). How can I feel comfortable with my psychiatrist again?

My psychiatrist lost his temper with me on the phone yesterday and said a lot of hurtful things. I must have deserved them, but I feel terrible. I have an appointment with him tomorrow (7/2) at 8am EST I need help figuring out how to keep my cool and understand how to be both a better patient and a better person. I apologize in advance for how incredibly long this is, and thanks in advance for those of you who read it. [more inside]

Why aren't my stimulating meds stimulating me?

You are not my psychiatrist! But maybe you have some idea about why this is happening. I've been diagnosed with dysthymia, major depression (in an episode now, triggered by trying to taper off of Cymbalta), and inattentive-type ADHD. I take a passel of stimulating psych meds but am still lethargic and, currently, pretty depressed, and my psychiatrists (two in the past year) don't know why. [more inside]

Talking to My Narcissist Parents After a Psych Hospitalization

I've posted here plenty seeking help related to mental health issues (bipolar depression, PTSD, irritability) and also with help talking to my parents. Now those two have merged and I'm trying to figure out how to talk to them while I am also readjusting to the outside world after spending 8 days in an inpatient psych ward. That readjustment is so very hard, and I don't want them pushing my buttons so I have to go back. I'm hoping someone here can help me strategize. How does "resistance to [psychiatric] medication" develop?

Today is the first day of National Novel Writing Month, and I've been kicking around a setting in which the regular use of all kinds of mood- and cognition-enhancing drugs is widely accepted in society and tacitly endorsed by the government (though this is neither utopic nor dystopic). I'd like my protagonist to be dealing with the fallout of developing a resistance to these mind-enhancing medications, but before I spend 50,000 words on it, I'd like to check my premises. Classic psychiatric texts?

I'd like to get my step-mother a gift for her 50th birthday - we're not particularly close, but I'd like to make a nice gesture. She's a psychiatrist, and a lot of her identity is bound up in that, so I'm thinking some kind of classic psychiatric text in a nice edition would be appreciated, but I don't know where to start. Can spend up to $200 or so. Any suggestions?

How often do I HAVE to see my shrink?

The doctor who prescribes my Ritalin and Lamictal is telling me that the state licensing board in Maryland requires that he see me once every three months. I've never heard of this before. I believe that it may be recommended that a doctor see a patient on some defined basis, especially with new prescriptions, but I've been seeing him for years, been taking these for years and never had any issues. The only justification I can imagine is the overall crackdown on Schedule II prescriptions. I really don't want to spend the time and money to sit there and tell him everything is fine 4 times per year. Is he really required to do this? Is it medically justifiable and necessary?

How long to get ADHD diagnosis?

I've never had insurance before and am getting it soon. I have seen counselors in the past and have been told that I might have some sort of ADHD and maybe depression. I do have trouble in school, especially in math and science classes. In order for the disability services at my school to provide me services, I need a licensed psychologist or psychiatrist to evaluate me. How long after I sign up for one of these will I start seeing him or her? How many sessions are there usually before they can evaluate me properly? I need to do this in a span of 4 months for spring semesters classes so I can receive accommodations. Is this asking too much? Will it be too quick? [more inside]

In a state of utter confusion

My adult daughter was diagnosed very quickly by a psychiatrist with bi polar disorder. It isn't that I disagree, but unfortunately I'm concerned that she is showing signs of antisocial personality disorder....She cycles about every three months having at least 2-3 mini rage episodes a month. She told me today that she's scared because of thoughts she is having. She lives with me, as do her two amazing kids. Her ability to care for them on her own is out of the question in my opinion based on the fact that she has a pill addiction and has had 2 seizures over dosing. When things are bad she goes to the doctor, has good intentions, gets back on a "good" track when things are bad she is not capable of being a loving mother. [more inside]

Advice on at least getting an IEP for a sweet kid with OCD

A young junior high aged relative (a cousin’s daughter) has severe OCD with compulsions related to checking and handwriting plus obsessions related to harm/avoiding harm. Immature coping skills/tendencies in many of the adults around her mean that her home life is chaotic at best. She does not have an IEP or adequate mental health services. At the strong recommendation of a regular pediatrician, my cousin did go to the school and attempt to request help/changes. This was a huge step for my cousin given that she also has severe OCD, is very avoidant, and has a lot of shame. She was largely dismissed by a teacher and a principal who said that there was “nothing wrong” that wasn’t due to “home life” and that the child just “needs to work faster”. [more inside]

CIA mind control

I was reading about psychic driving which is a CIA and psychotherapy technique to change human behavior. What I wonder is what kind of messages did they play to them? The same ones over and over? Different ones mixed together? what kind of things did they say? Seeing as how it was done by Dr. D. Ewen Cameron at a legitimate University under the guise of legitimate psychiatric research , I would imagine he would have released peer reviewed medical journals detailing his techniques, their effectiveness ect including what messages he played to them.
