I'm seeing reporting that bothers me that my state tax authority is targeting artists for auditing based on what sounds like some specious assertions regarding whether their business models and expenses are appropriate. I realized I don't know what I should do to formally protest these actions.

i've been living in an apartment building in san francisco for 10 years and have a one-car garage. for much of that time i parked my car on the street, parallel to the curb, blocking my own driveway to some extent. i also had friends park there cars there, and when i had a rental car, i parked it there on and off for several months. no one ever got a ticket.
a couple months ago i parked a friend's car there overnight and got a ticket. apparently someone had called in a complaint, although the car was extending only into my own driveway, and by a small amount at that. i protested the $98 ticket, saying that i was the driver and the only one authorized to call in a complaint, but it was denied. i have no idea who called in the complaint, and DPT will not give out that information.
i plan to do an in-person hearing. has anyone successfully fought this sort of ticket?

"Rich man's war, poor man's fight" goes back to the US Civil War and illustrates how it's the poor who do most of the actual fighting in any conflict. What other catchy or classic phrases illustrate how careers involving legalized violence (military, police) frequently draw in the economically disadvantaged?

Occupy Wall Street held a
National Gathering in Philadelphia which ended this week. There was supposed to be a collectively drafted "blueprint" document emerging from sessions. The last report I could find mentioned that it was still being compiled on July 5. It was supposed to be completed to hand off to a group marching to NYC over the course of this weekend. Does anyone have a link to this document? All I've seen are some painted signs that were used in the process.

I'm very angry about what's happening in the UK right now, including-but-not-limited-to: the unnecessarily savage and unequal budget cuts, the privatisation of our education, health and police systems, the scapegoating of vulnerable groups and the dishonesty and cynicism of the Conservative and Liberal Democrat politicians involved.
Other than protesting, what active, concrete action can I take to fight or correct these wrongs? [more inside]

I'm curious about military communication methods from before radio - how armies coordinated maneuvers and formations without it. I'm also curious which preradio communications methods would most be of use to modern protesters in urban settings should they be unable to use modern wireless devices.

I remember the relief of hearing Sage Francis'
Makeshift Patriot for the first time in October of 2001. It was the first song that voiced my fear of possible repression in the US. I thought there would be a wave of left-wing protest songs, but it seemed to be more of a trickle. In August of 2002 Sleater-Kinney asked in
Combat Rock where the protest songs were. My question is the same as theirs: What songs protesting government reaction to 9/11 came out after the event itself and before its 1st anniversary? I am specifically looking for protest songs by American musicians.

Heard a good song on the radio, but can't find it anywhere... i'm guessing it's from the 60s, because it sounds kind of dylan-y/protest-y and there's a lyric that goes something like "i need someone to help explain the war"... i thought the song title would be I'M A CHILD or I AM A CHILD because the song is made up of lyrics like "I need someone to help me tie my shoes/I am a child, "I need someone to help me lose the blues/I am a child"... I made those up, but you get the idea... ring any bells?

What
news am I missing at the Olympics - what has been covered up or ignored by the Chinese regulators providing the video feed to NBC etc? I have to imagine there have been some outbursts or protests and the Chinese are not letting the media cover it (at least on live TV). Is there a good site noting these occurrences, or have the games just gone off nearly flawlessly? (excepting the drum tower murder last week.)

My university is hosting a speech by former secretary of state Alberto Gonzalez. I'm ethically opposed to a lot of things he's done but I'm going to be protesting against his visit primarily because my university is paying him over 30,000 dollars to speak here; money that will no doubt be immediately spent on defense for his pending court date. Anyway, a band and I will be playing at the protest, so I was wondering if anyone had recommendations as to songs that would be especially appropriate to play at his visit.

I am flying soon. I would like to bring a bottle of water to security, a nice plain Muji style bottle, with a custom label on it. What should be pasted on it for this lame, meaningless, nearly silent protest? What will not get me violated or detained, but will clearly state the idiocies of fear we are now enduring?
Or is this horrible, this idea?
