I met someone today who explained that their tattoo was based on a style adopted by Indian women during British Occupation which served as a way of turning off British men who might otherwise want to take them away for various unsavory purposes. The women would in some cases get these tattoos on their necks and faces. Although the person told me the Indian term for this particular style of tattooing I failed to write it down, and now cannot seem to google up this phenomenon. Was hoping someone knew about it, what it's called, or could provide some links to more information.

Actually, that should read "Hey, readers of Chinese script, etc". Recently, some of my neighbors took exception to the opening of a homeless shelter in my neighborhood. They held a protest. Some of the signs were in Chinese. What do these signs
say in English, if you've got a moment?
Many thanks in advance.

My friend was riding his bike through Brooklyn early Sat morning. Streets were quiet and he was not stopping at all the red lights, just slowing & crossing the (mostly) vacant intersections.
Unbeknownst to him there was a cop in a patrol car following him about 1/2 a block back. After multiple blocks the cop finally pulled him over and issued separate tickets for every red light, totally about $800 worth.
Although there is no dispute that he went through the lights, this was a very dick-ish move. How to protest in court? [more inside]

Emory University is planning to give a distinguished alumni award to H. Eddie Fox, who has been leading the fight against the inclusion and equality of gay Methodists in the Methodist Church (among other accomplishments). Students/staff/faculty are currently mobilizing to have that award rescinded. We have less than a week left. What is the most effective way to pressure Emory to rescind that award? [more inside]

Some years back, some farmers were fighting battles with police, I think in either Japan or Korea.
Due to rules that govern how police are allowed to escalate their response, the farmers were able to stage full battles with home-made armour, with blunt weapons, in formation, and the police responded with equivalent force without employing lethal weapons.
I particularly remember a pre-battle photo of police and farmers, in formation, just waiting for the battle to start at the allotted time.
Anyone remember more details than that?

My school is currently working on a new "Respect for Freedom of Expression Policy". A PDF of the latest draft is available here
. I would appreciate any feedback about ways to improve it, especially from the perspective of allowing maximum free speech, protest, and dissent, and limiting the ability of the school to crack down on campus activism. [more inside]

i've been living in an apartment building in san francisco for 10 years and have a one-car garage. for much of that time i parked my car on the street, parallel to the curb, blocking my own driveway to some extent. i also had friends park there cars there, and when i had a rental car, i parked it there on and off for several months. no one ever got a ticket.
a couple months ago i parked a friend's car there overnight and got a ticket. apparently someone had called in a complaint, although the car was extending only into my own driveway, and by a small amount at that. i protested the $98 ticket, saying that i was the driver and the only one authorized to call in a complaint, but it was denied. i have no idea who called in the complaint, and DPT will not give out that information.
i plan to do an in-person hearing. has anyone successfully fought this sort of ticket? [more inside]

"Rich man's war, poor man's fight" goes back to the US Civil War and illustrates how it's the poor who do most of the actual fighting in any conflict. What other catchy or classic phrases illustrate how careers involving legalized violence (military, police) frequently draw in the economically disadvantaged? [more inside]

Occupy Wall Street held a National Gathering
in Philadelphia which ended this week. There was supposed to be a collectively drafted "blueprint" document emerging from sessions. The last report I could find mentioned that it was still being compiled on July 5. It was supposed to be completed to hand off to a group marching to NYC over the course of this weekend. Does anyone have a link to this document? All I've seen are some painted signs that were used in the process.

I'm very angry about what's happening in the UK right now, including-but-not-limited-to: the unnecessarily savage and unequal budget cuts, the privatisation of our education, health and police systems, the scapegoating of vulnerable groups and the dishonesty and cynicism of the Conservative and Liberal Democrat politicians involved. Other than protesting, what active, concrete action can I take to fight or correct these wrongs? [more inside]

I remember the relief of hearing Sage Francis' Makeshift Patriot
for the first time in October of 2001. It was the first song that voiced my fear of possible repression in the US. I thought there would be a wave of left-wing protest songs, but it seemed to be more of a trickle. In August of 2002 Sleater-Kinney asked in Combat Rock
where the protest songs were. My question is the same as theirs: What songs protesting government reaction to 9/11 came out after the event itself and before its 1st anniversary? I am specifically looking for protest songs by American musicians.

Heard a good song on the radio, but can't find it anywhere... i'm guessing it's from the 60s, because it sounds kind of dylan-y/protest-y and there's a lyric that goes something like "i need someone to help explain the war"... i thought the song title would be I'M A CHILD or I AM A CHILD because the song is made up of lyrics like "I need someone to help me tie my shoes/I am a child, "I need someone to help me lose the blues/I am a child"... I made those up, but you get the idea... ring any bells?
