Support servces for an isolated woman with family violence New York

Asking for a family member: I'm a distressed brother living in Australia with no experience of US family violence, health systems, judiciary, police or addiction services. Please help. My sister "Pas" lives in Wood Side Queens, New York. She is a single woman and works as a nanny for the moment. She speaks very good English and is independent. Yesterday, whilst visiting an aunt who is very sick with cancer in New York, she was attacked by the aunt's son without any provocation. (Under influence? not sure). [more inside]

How should I plan to protect my husband and his assets from myself?

To start with, I know that this is something that will need to be discussed with a lawyer when the time is right and it will vary according to our local laws. But this is a general question, I'm looking for general information and answers (not legal advice!) about what sort of things may be necessary in the future to protect my husband. [more inside]

Hearing Protection for Musicians, or, It's Too Loud and I'm Too Old

I am a bass player, and I have recently returned to playing loud, noisy rock and roll after a 4-year hiatus from the stage. I have always eschewed earplugs on stage, on the grounds that they keep me from hearing all of the nuance I need to hear to play effectively with a group. But I ain't no spring chicken anymore, and now I recognize that the real reason I never wore earplugs before, even in mind-bendingly loud bands, was mostly out of misplaced machismo. I can tell that I have lost some hearing over the years, especially in the ear that usually faces the drums, and I want to avoid losing more. I have tried using cheap, disposable foam ear plugs, but I am not satisfied with the sound quality I am getting with them. Are there better ear protection alternatives out there? [more inside]

I love you, so I must bury you alive?

My wife thought Last of the Mohicans had a scene where the heroine was buried alive to protect her from an Indian raid, with only a reed to breathe through. I just watched the movie, and didn't see anything like that. Is she thinking of another movie, or a (very) different cut of the film?

Questions about Staples' 2 yr Protection Plan

What is the best Anti-virus and firewall apps for a Win 7 PC in 2011?

What is the best Anti-virus and firewall apps for a Win 7 PC in 2011? I just purchased a new Dell PC, and I'd like to set it up with a good anti-virus and firewall program. The general consensus seems to be that McAfee and Norton are bloated, resource-hoggy, and ineffective. Google turns up plenty of free programs, but credible, CURRENT reviews are hard to find. Many of the big programs offer "security centers" - huge programs that combine anti-virus, firewall, malware removers, and phishing protection. Some of this seems necessary, others not-so-much. Also, Win 7 has a firewall built-in; since I'm not remotely a security expert - I have no idea if this is sufficient, or I need a 3rd party app on top (or instead of it). So, what's a conscientious but non-expert Windows user to do? (I know, I know - get a Mac. Which I've done - I LOVE my iMac. But I ALSO need a PC for work...)

banking:filter:What, if anything, should I do about BofA closing/cancelling my credit cards ....because I paid them off?

I had two Bank of America credit cards. Both were of the high interest types (21% and 25% interest). I owed in the area of 5 thousand dollars total and I knew that it was time to bite the bullet and take the money out of my savings to pay them off. I may have been late in payments a few times (not often) and usually I only paid the minimum payment due. I naively thought paying them off completely would be viewed as a positive thing. I paid them both off just days ago. [more inside]
