Tell me about cleaning up a toxic creek. In this case, something like the Newtown Creek in NY, now a Superfund site. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/28/nyregion/28newtown.html What is the process? Is it dredged? Dammed and drained? Dust, noise, time? Please explain the engineering. If the waste has seeped laterally, and it has, does that mean extensive excavation? What is the impact on the surrounding properties? What happens to property values, how do banks look at this, now and looking to the future? Please explain from a Realtor's or developer's viewpoint.

YANML: I have an easement through my neighbor’s property. I use it regularly and the neighbor and I get along just fine. The other day the neighbor approached me about extinguishing the easement. While he didn’t offer me any money or anything, he was clearly lobbing the ball to me to come up with what I would want to release the easement to him. I’m located in Alameda County, California. More than you need to know after the break. [more inside]

I'm thinking of buying a one bed flat for around 130k in Brighton or Bristol, UK. I have a 50k deposit. I am not committed to any area (or country for that matter) and I have no emotional need to own a house. But if it makes financial sense, I am in a position to do it. But does it make financial sense to buy? Everyone apparently says yes, but I don't understand the maths. If prices stay flat, for instance, would it not make more sense to rent and invest the money elsewhere? I'm really thinking short term, would I be up in, say, 10 years, if everything stays fairly steady. I can't really make the mental leap to factor in the benefit of owning the house in 25 years....
We recently moved into an old house. It's on a small (0.2 acre) lot that is nicely wooded. What is not so nice is that our backyard is bisected by our neighbor's utility lines which run from a pole in the back of our lots. Both our house and out neighbor's house feed off of the same utility pole. [more inside]

Our apartment was damaged on Friday, and the whole floor needs to come out, possibly some of the drywall too. The property manager needs us to vacate, and remove all of our stuff, for an extended period of time (1-2 months). (Note that we have been dealing with the property manager, and to a lesser extent, the superintendent, and not our landlord.) How much notice is he legally required to give us? We live in Toronto. YANAL. [more inside]

I'm going to buy a home soon, probably a semi-detached bungalow. I want to have an educated guess at how soundproof a property is while I view it. Are there any tips/tricks to help me judge how soundproof a home will be while viewing it for (let's say) just 30 minutes at a time? When during those actual 30 minutes there are no neighbours making any noise, or maybe they're making a lot of noise but I just can't hear it. [more inside]

Buying property with a water view... How can I confirm that the nice view will remain unobstructed over the years?
We are house-hunting in the Seattle area. Looking at property with water views. Willing to pay the higher price that comes with a view. But I'm reading some horror stories about how a neighbor will build a tower in front of your view, or neighbors who refuse to trim their tall shrubs. And then your view is obscured and your property value drops. How do I research this? How can I know if the viewshed is protected or not? What sort of monitoring would I need to do over the years? I will ask my realtor to research it, but I'd like to hear from people with experience with this issue.

I was reading comments on Fark about an article where a man was pulled over and had $26,000 in his trunk and the money was confiscated but he was not charged. The merit of this is not what my question is about, it is about whether money (or property can be a defendant in a case). [more inside]
