How to get a dispassionate appraisal of what a house is worth

What's the most dispassionate way to determine what a house is worth? Uncle owns a house and may sell it to us at a favorable rate, but we'd like to figure out a fair price to set overall, so that Uncle isn't shafted but we don't overpay, either. [more inside]

Where to find a reasonably priced studio flat or room in London?

Where to find a reasonably priced studio flat or room in London? I've been looking for accommodation in London for quite some time now, but so far I've been unsuccessful (or.. unlucky) with searching in all the "usual" places (Gumtree.com, Findaproperty, flatland.co.uk etc.) In the meantime, I need to move within a couple of weeks, and can't seem to find anything in East Central London (close to City University) that is not super expensive and/or managed by a (what i prefer to call) "greedy agent"... very frustrating :/

Garage Insurance

We have a property with a house and garage, and we are going to have the unrepairable house torn down. Our insurance company says they can't insure an outbuilding, because they only insure houses. We really don't want to leave the house standing, but the garage is new and we'd like to keep it. Any suggestions?

Vacation property wants damage deposit a month before and a month after...?

I am taking a short (weekend) let on a holiday property just outside of London, UK. It's a big house with lots of bedrooms that is used for weddings, hen parties and corporate team-building as well as for family holidays. In addition to 100% payment in full in advance (which I expected), the people letting the property are demanding £1l as a damage deposit one month before I arrive at the property. Their T&Cs state that they will give this back to me one month after I leave the property. [more inside]

Toronto Boundary Surveyor

I need to get a boundary survey on my residential property in Toronto. I've called several surveyors but have only heard back from one, who says it'll cost $900 and take two weeks to perform. Good to time to buy for 200k in Bristol, UK?

Should I buy a house in Bristol, UK, or wait? I have a 100k deposit, and a 100k mortgage in principle. Should I buy a house or flat in Bristol UK? I am single, 32, more or less happy renting, and have no reason to buy other than a sense of cultural obligation, boredom with renting, and available cash. There is nothing tying me to Bristol, if you have any golden location tips I'm willing to travel.

Where did this unclaimed money come from, and how do I find it?

I received a letter from an "independent refund processing agency" stating that I have a fairly significant amount of unclaimed money from the government, which they offer to send me for a 25% fee (I pay them after I receive the check). Since I'm aware that there are real agencies (such as Keane) that do pretty much the same thing as what this agency is doing, I'm wondering if it might actually be legit, and if so, where on earth can I find this info on my own and avoid the 25% fee?
