Recently went for a viewing of a 2 bedroom condo for rent and the landlord has created a third makeshift room in the living room which is also available for rent. Is this legal in Canada? [more inside]

I am an American moving to Edinburgh soon from the Netherlands, and I want to begin speaking with a solicitor about what steps I need to take to prepare to purchase a home within the next year (or even sooner if possible). I need someone who has experience working with foreigners. I want to work with someone who is knowledgeable and a straightforward communicator. A personal recommendation from someone with prior experience buying or selling in Scotland would be helpful. Any agencies or individuals that you had a good experience with?

Husband and I are seeking a rental home. We found a nice house and the landlord has invited us to apply. Last time we applied for rental the property manager had us do a credit/background check via an online service.
This new landlord gave us a paper form asking for SSN, DOB, our checking and savings account numbers, employment history, and other info. The landlord is an older person with a couple investment properties. I'm sure this is not a scam, but I am reluctant to hand all my ID and bank numbers to a stranger.
Advice? Anyone know a simple, reputable online background checking service that I can suggest to this landlord? We would pay the fee.
My goal is to make the landlord comfortable so we can lease the house. The Seattle rental market is very tight. This landlord has his pick of many worthy applicants. We have excellent credit, references, etc.

About 30 years ago my dad had a large gun collection (about 100 total). They were stolen and only about 10 of them were ever recovered. He had a list of models and serial numbers that he sent to local law enforcement. I still have that list. is there any chance of recovering more of the guns? How would I go about that?

I live in a Midwestern college town, and we are homeowners fairly close to the university campus. A large chunk of land about a block from our house has been sold to a developer. The developer plans to turn it into student housing, provided they can get the required zoning changes. I'm looking for people who've had similar experiences dealing with local governments on zoning issues, and what I, along with my neighborhood organization, can do to cope in the months to come. Through a friend I have been offered the opportunity to work at a "mom and pop" 60 bed motel that has a fitness center, pool, and serves meals. It averages decent ratings from guests. I'm up for the challenge but I'm no spring chicken. I lost a good paying position in the recession in 208 and subsequently had to drop out of a Ph.D program just before comps- and it looks like I won't be finishing that degree any time soon, because I currently work in a call center and can't even afford a car. I need to get a boundary survey on my residential property in Toronto. I've called several surveyors but have only heard back from one, who says it'll cost $900 and take two weeks to perform. Is this normal? Seems pricey and lengthy for an 18' x 100' rectangular lot. Any recommendations for surveyors in Toronto?

We recently moved into an old house. It's on a small (0.2 acre) lot that is nicely wooded.
What is not so nice is that our backyard is bisected by our neighbor's utility lines which run from a pole in the back of our lots. Both our house and out neighbor's house feed off of the same utility pole. [more inside]

We are house-hunting in the Seattle area. Looking at property with water views. Willing to pay the higher price that comes with a view. But I'm reading some horror stories about how a neighbor will build a tower in front of your view, or neighbors who refuse to trim their tall shrubs. And then your view is obscured and your property value drops.
How do I research this? How can I know if the viewshed is protected or not? What sort of monitoring would I need to do over the years?
I will ask my realtor to research it, but I'd like to hear from people with experience with this issue.
